103. Miss, Are You... Seeking Assistance?
Zhou Xiaoxiao stood hesitantly at the entrance of the café.
It was the weekend, the day she had agreed to meet Ling Ning. Although Ling Ning had assured her that everything would be fine, this matter concerned her lifelong happiness, and it was impossible not to feel some anxiety about it.
“Why isn’t she here yet?” Zhou Xiaoxiao pulled out her phone to check the time, realizing that it had already reached the appointed hour, but Ling Ning still hadn’t arrived. This made her a little anxious.
Just as she was about to call Ling Ning, a raspy, somewhat effeminate voice sounded from behind her. “Miss, are you… offering companionship?”
“Companionship? Which of your eyes makes me look like someone who would do that?”
Zhou Xiaoxiao turned around, only to see a boy standing there. His face was delicate, handsome even, and something about his brows seemed oddly familiar—like she had seen him somewhere before.
“Well, that’s really unfortunate then~”
Zhou Xiaoxiao was completely flustered. This was the first time someone had asked her that question. She was about to pull out her phone again to call Ling Ning when that same voice came from behind her once more.
“Zhou Xiaoxiao, your boyfriend’s just left you here, aren’t you going to pick him up?”
“Boyfriend? What boyfriend? I don’t even have a boyfriend—wait! How do you know my name? Hey!?”
Suddenly, an idea flashed through Zhou Xiaoxiao’s mind, and she called out, a little uncertainly, “Ling Ning?”
“Finally, it dawns on you~” At that moment, the boy’s voice turned into a female one, still a bit raspy.
“Your voice…”
“Well, you know, a man’s voice being too delicate can sound pretty annoying, so I worked on a disguise.” Ling Ning waved it off as if it were nothing. In truth, she had practiced for days, even mumbling her way through classes, which made Xia You think she had lost her mind.
But training your voice wasn’t something that could be perfected easily, and the time frame had been too short. Without any special tricks, no matter how much she practiced, there was always that effeminate tone.
However, as luck would have it, her voice had turned hoarse from practicing too much yesterday, which added just the right roughness to mask the delicate quality. Although it still sounded a bit flamboyant, overall, it was a significant improvement.
“But this makeup, though—you were nearly unrecognizable.”
Ling Ning smiled faintly. She had paid for a professional lunch just to get Xiao Liu, an expert, to do her makeup. With the skills of a professional, it wasn’t easy to tell it was her.
As for the clothes, Ling Ning had picked them out herself, relying on her sense of style from her previous life. It was just an ordinary casual outfit. Although she was meeting Zhou Xiaoxiao’s parents, she felt that wearing a suit would come off too formal, so casual wear seemed more appropriate.
As for her chest, she used special undergarments to flatten it. When she first put them on, it felt like she could hardly breathe, but by now she had gotten somewhat used to it, although it was still quite uncomfortable.
“If you could recognize me right away, how would I pass in front of your parents?” Ling Ning replied confidently.
“Alright then, let’s go. We still need to buy a gift,” Zhou Xiaoxiao urged, looking quite eager as she tried to pull Ling Ning along to shop for presents.
“What’s the rush? I already prepared a gift. I even skipped breakfast to do my makeup and get everything ready. Plus, I wanted to test out my disguise here at the café.” Ling Ning smiled slyly.
Zhou Xiaoxiao glanced at Ling Ning, noticing that dressed in men’s clothes, even Ling Ning’s demeanor had changed. She carried herself like a real guy, almost evoking the same feeling as when they first met.
At that moment, Ling Ning suddenly turned to Zhou Xiaoxiao, her expression serious. “Xiaoxiao, I need to ask you something, and I want you to answer me sincerely.”
Seeing the earnest look in Ling Ning’s eyes, Zhou Xiaoxiao nodded solemnly.
“So, for all the money I spent on clothes and meals, could I get reimbursed later?”
Zhou Xiaoxiao suddenly had the feeling of questioning her decision—was getting Ling Ning to play her boyfriend really a good idea?

“Welcome back, Master~”
The moment Ling Ning walked into the café, she heard an unfamiliar girl’s voice. She turned and saw a beautiful girl she didn’t recognize, smiling warmly at her.
Ling Ning remembered that Chu Mengyao had mentioned hiring full-time maids a while ago. This must be one of the new hires.
“Hello, beautiful. I haven’t seen you before. What’s your name?” Ling Ning flashed a charming smile.
“H-hello, I’m new here. My name is Jiang Xue, ah! No, I mean, I’m Xiaoxue.” Jiang Xue stammered nervously.
Ling Ning chuckled at the flustered maid. “Isn’t it customary to lead guests to their seats first?”
“Oh, right, right. Sir—no! Master, this way, please.”
Ling Ning sat down quietly, browsing the menu. She had been here for a while now, and neither Chu Mengyao nor even Ye Xuan, who had walked right past her, had recognized her. The makeup really was effective.
“What would you like to order, Master?” Jiang Xue asked cautiously, looking at what appeared to be a regular customer but a very handsome one.
“The usual.”
“The… the usual?” Jiang Xue froze. How was she supposed to know what Ling Ning’s usual order was?
“A glass of milk and a slice of cream cake,” Zhou Xiaoxiao suddenly appeared and placed the order for Ling Ning.
Ling Ning gave her an exasperated look. In truth, she only wanted milk tea, but Zhou Xiaoxiao had ordered her a cream cake too. Honestly, she didn’t have the appetite for something that rich so early in the day.
“Xiaoxiao, did you get a boyfriend?”
Chu Mengyao had noticed Zhou Xiaoxiao’s restless state all morning, seemingly waiting for someone. And now, she had returned with a handsome young man. Not bad at all.
“Hello, I’m Xiaoxiao’s boyfriend, Ling Ling.” Ling Ning smiled and introduced herself.
“Ling Ning?” Chu Mengyao repeated, sounding surprised.
“Ling as in ‘soaring,’ and Ling as in ‘plume’—Ling Ling.” Ling Ning clarified with a smile.
“I thought your name sounded like someone I knew, even your face too…” Chu Mengyao squinted at her, looking closely. There really was a resemblance to Ling Ning.
“Is something wrong?”
Chu Mengyao shook her head. “Nothing. Have fun, you two. I’ll get back to work.”
Seeing that Chu Mengyao hadn’t recognized her, even at such a close distance, Ling Ning finally relaxed. Her biggest fear was Zhou Xiaoxiao’s parents recognizing her on the spot—it would be beyond awkward.
