Chapter 36: Chapter 37: Nature Transformation Training
"Teacher Mu Yue, how long did I last this time?" Obito wiped the water from his face and looked at Mu Yue expectantly.
He felt like he had been standing in the river for a long time, possibly an hour.
"You did great this time, you lasted twenty minutes," Mu Yue praised without hesitation.
"Ah? Only twenty minutes? I thought I lasted at least half an hour," Obito said, somewhat disappointed.
On the surface of the river, not only did he have to keep his chakra flowing, but he also had to pay attention to Mu Yue's water style, watch the ripples on the water, and stay ready to dodge at any moment. Maintaining this state made it feel like he had been there for a long time.
"Chakra control training is finished. You can start nature transformation training now," Mu Yue said with a smile.
"Okay, I'll go down right away." Obito, who had been practicing water treading recently, instinctively walked towards the riverbank. After a few steps, he realized what Mu Yue had actually said.
"Finally no more water treading," Obito couldn't help but cheer, only to quiet down when he noticed that Shisui and Might Guy were looking at him.
"I've been treading water every day lately; I've almost gotten used to the taste of this river," Obito muttered in complaint.
Water treading was different from tree climbing. For tree climbing, as long as you adjusted yourself properly or Mu Yue was quick enough to catch you, everything would be fine.
But with water treading, if you didn't control it well, you'd end up swallowing a lot of water.
Fortunately, there weren't many people around, and the water was clear and clean, so it didn't taste strange.
"Do you want to keep practicing?" Mu Yue asked playfully.
"Forget it, forget it. I'll avoid this river if I see it again," Obito said, no longer trying to act tough after all the torment.
"Better start nature transformation now. The competition is only fourteen days away," Obito felt that time was running out.
Next, in addition to nature transformation, he also needed to improve his mastery of the Great Fireball technique.
"Follow my schedule, and we'll have enough time," Mu Yue reassured him.
After all, this training was only for a civilian competition, not for a battle with Pain, so there was no need to push the nature transformation too far.
With his teaching skills and the fact that Mu Yue had already mastered the Great Fireball technique, improving Obito's Great Fireball would be easy.
Since it was tied to the rewards for completing the training tasks, Mu Yue had carefully planned it out.
Soon, Mu Yue's shadow clone brought over a large wooden barrel. Mu Yue opened it, took out an ice cube about the size of an egg, and handed it to Obito.
"Place the ice cube in your palm, then use chakra to perform nature transformation and melt it," Mu Yue explained the first step of the nature transformation training process.
Nature transformation was considered a more difficult and advanced training stage in a ninja's journey.
Even if you had enough chakra, if your nature transformation level wasn't high enough for the corresponding technique, its power would be limited.
Fire transformation training was more dangerous than wind, because the burning nature of fire could affect the user.
At first, Mu Yue had planned for Obito to burn some leaves, but if Obito couldn't instantly reduce the leaves to ash, his hand would be burned by the flaming leaves.
So, Mu Yue thought of the ice cube instead. It had a low enough temperature that when exposed to fire, it would only melt into water, and Obito's flames wouldn't be strong enough to scald the water.
"That's so cold!" Obito gasped as he held the ice cube in his hand. Even though it was spring and the sun wasn't strong in the morning, the temperature was still low.
"Then hurry up and release chakra," Mu Yue said as he tapped Obito's head lightly with two fingers.
Obito winced and shrank his neck, then began guiding his chakra toward his palm, ready to release it after performing nature transformation.
"While performing nature transformation, always remember the nature of fire: burning and high temperature. Make your chakra burn and increase its temperature," Mu Yue reminded him.
Obito focused on the ice cube in his hand, nodding as he silently repeated the words "burn" and "high temperature" in his mind.
Two minutes later, Obito felt the water flowing over his palm and immediately smiled.
"Teacher, the ice cube is melting!" Obito said happily.
"Why don't you try holding another ice cube in your hand for a few minutes without using chakra?" Mu Yue suggested.
Obito curiously dropped the ice cube in his hand and picked up another one of the same size, holding it without using chakra.
Then, he awkwardly realized that the ice cube had only melted a little less than before.
"The human body has heat. Just holding an ice cube of this size, you would have melted it without using chakra," Mu Yue explained, rubbing his forehead.
Thankfully, it wasn't hot now, otherwise, Obito might have thought he was some kind of nature transformation genius.
"Hehe, I'm not used to using my hands for ninjutsu. I'm so used to using my mouth," Obito scratched his head, explaining.
"Remember to always keep the nature of fire in mind when performing nature transformation," Mu Yue continued, taking out a block of ice the size of a human head.
Sizz! Sizz! Sizz!!
In the moment Mu Yue finished speaking, the red light flashed, and the large ice block instantly turned into a cloud of white smoke, evaporating into the air.
"High temperature, burning," Obito kept repeating these two words as he continuously gathered chakra in his palm and released it.
Soon, the morning had nearly passed, and Obito's hands had become numb from the cold, and the skin on his hands had turned pale and wrinkled from prolonged exposure to water.
"Now that I think about it, the river water doesn't taste too bad," Obito regretted not agreeing to practice more with Mu Yue earlier.
This nature transformation training was even more torturous than water treading.
"Stop for now, let's eat," Mu Yue called to the three of them, then took out three lunch boxes and handed them to each person.
"Today's food smells so good!" Might Guy opened his lunch box and was immediately hit by a scent that seemed to go straight to his soul, with a dazzling golden light coming from the food inside.
"Teacher Mu Yue, this food is weird, it's actually glowing!" Might Guy said, a bit stunned.
"It's just sunlight reflecting off of it. Don't worry, eat up," Mu Yue said with a faint smile.
Might Guy took a spoonful and immediately his eyes lit up. He quickly scooped up more and shoved it into his mouth.
"So delicious! So delicious!" Might Guy felt like he had never eaten anything so good.
[You have given your disciple Golden Fried Rice, and your disciple is very grateful. Reward: Chakra +100.]
Mu Yue nodded to himself, realizing that the cooking skill was indeed very powerful.
"Did you train so hard today, Guy?" Obito felt Might Guy was being a bit over the top. Although Teacher Mu Yue was a great cook, there was no need to eat so quickly.
"It really does taste amazing," Obito said, opening his lunch box and slightly changing his mind.
His box didn't have fried rice but a homemade stir-fry.
Obito first grabbed some vegetables, then took a bite of rice and placed it in his mouth.
"So good!" Obito's eyes widened as he felt an explosion of flavor in his mouth.
Then, he started devouring the food, stuffing his mouth full until he reached a chili pepper in the dish.
A terrifying spicy taste exploded, and Obito felt as if he had stepped into a volcano about to erupt, with hot, dry air all around him.
