Chapter 207: Fighting War Shadows

Chapter 207 - Fighting War Shadows

After defeating the kobolds, a magic stone dropped to the ground.

Mahiro picked it up, glanced at it briefly, and tossed it into his backpack.

With the kobolds dealt with, he didn't waste time on the first floor.

Checking his map, he headed straight for the stairs leading to the lower floors.

Most of the monsters on the upper floors were Level 1, making it a slog to gain any decent experience.

Besides, Mahiro still had system quests to finish.

Main Quest 3: Monster Hunter

Difficulty: Normal

Requirements: Kill at least 10,000 monsters in the Dungeon.

Rewards: One lottery draw, 10,000 points, and at least one point per monster (higher-level monsters give more points).

The goal was simple: kill 10,000 monsters.

There was a cap of 10,000 points, but completing six main quests would still net him a ton of points.

With that in mind, Mahiro decided to grind through the quest as fast as possible.

He moved down to the second floor, then the third, and kept going.

Along the way, he ran into plenty of monsters.

Not wanting to waste time on weaklings, he used Shunpo to dodge past them without a second thought.

After a while, Mahiro reached the twelfth floor.

This was the deepest level marked on public maps, marking the end of the upper floors.

"If I go any further, I'll have to find my own way," Mahiro thought as he walked through the twelfth floor.

According to the records, the dungeon was shaped like a cone—smaller at the top and expanding as you went deeper.

The further down you went, the larger and more maze-like it became.

For someone like Mahiro, who was exploring the dungeon for the first time, going deeper would just waste time.

If other adventurers heard Mahiro's thoughts, they'd probably freak out.

For a rookie to reach the fifth floor alone within a month was already something to brag about for half a year.

But here was Mahiro, hitting the twelfth floor on his first day—and still not satisfied.

If the map had more info, he'd have gone even deeper.

ZZzz...

While Mahiro was searching for the path to the next floor, a sharp, grating sound reached his ears.

It grew louder and closer, mixed with the unsettling noise of something slithering across the ground.

Just hearing it was enough to make anyone's skin crawl.

In the dim light, dark shadows with glowing red eyes came into view.

There were at least forty of them, and in the narrow space, they were more than enough to block his path.

These were War Shadows—one of the most annoying monsters in the upper floors.

They always showed up in groups and, according to the records, had a bit of intelligence and emotion.

Their dark scales made them tough to damage, and their agility was top-tier for Level 1 monsters.

High defense, high speed, and attacking in packs made them a nightmare for rookies.

Most adventurers would form teams by the time they hit the fifth floor.

Every five floors, the monsters got significantly stronger and deadlier.

For a rookie, the fifth floor was usually the limit.

Going past the fifth floor alone was basically asking to die.

The forty War Shadows closed in fast, surrounding Mahiro from all sides—on the ground, the walls, even the ceiling.

They raised the front half of their bodies, ready to strike.

"Well, might as well clear this wave," Mahiro thought.

Since he hadn't found the way to the next floor yet, he figured he'd take care of the monsters.

Besides, he hadn't killed anything since the second floor.

Now that he was surrounded, it was a good chance to test how strong these upper-floor monsters were.

At the very least, their speed was way above the kobolds'.

The slithering grew louder as the War Shadows attacked.

The ones on the ground moved to trap him, while those on the walls and ceiling lunged from above.

Hyōrinmaru appeared in Mahiro's hand.

In the dim light, his eyes quickly scanned the area.

With a quick sidestep, he easily dodged the first wave of attacks.

As soon as the War Shadows missed, Mahiro swung Hyōrinmaru with precision.

Each swing came with a faint roar and the sound of monsters being cut down.

[You have killed a Level 1 monster. 20 points earned.]

[You have killed a Level 1 monster. 20 points earned.]

The system prompt kept popping up as Mahiro wiped out the monsters.

In less than half a minute, all forty War Shadows had turned to ash, leaving behind a scattering of magic stones on the ground.
