Chapter 27: Chapter 27: The House-elf
"Leaving aside everything else, if the four of you act alone, it will be easy for them to seize an opportunity. James's concern is not unfounded."
They had already arrived at the Great Hall, and it was dinner time. Students from all four houses were seated at the long tables, eating.
The six of them sat together in a circle at the end of the Gryffindor long table.
"If all eight of us act together, they won't be able to cause us any trouble," Lupin suggested.
"Our two houses don't have many overlapping classes, so acting together is simply impossible," Al frowned.
"That's what I think too, James," Gary said, "The four of us already hang out together frequently. We just need to be more vigilant."
"Let them be," Black said, a bit sulkily. "Just don't come crying if something happens."
The six parted ways unhappily. Gary and Al still decided not to stick with the Gryffindor foursome, believing their own abilities were enough to protect their companions.
They returned to the Ravenclaw long table and held a small meeting with Kona and Howard.
"We must at least ensure that two people act together. Kona and I will be together, and Gary and Howard will be together, to ensure everyone's safety," Al took on the role of the big sister, emphasizing the meeting's spirit.
...
"Gary, Gary!" As soon as he returned to the dormitory, Gary heard Howard's loud voice.
"What's wrong?" Gary had been busy in the common room all night, only just finishing his Potion Class essay. He was utterly exhausted, and his voice was somewhat weak.
"I'm so hungry!" Howard rolled around on his bed. "I've had too much homework these past two days, and I've eaten all my stored food. Anna isn't here either, I'm truly pitiful, weak, and helpless!"
His plump, bloated body rolled on the bed.
Howard always brought a lot of food from the Hogwarts kitchen, asking the House-elf Anna to protect it with preservation charms and putting it in his drawer for later use.
These foods came in handy whenever he had too much homework and needed to stay up late.
Now, Howard's drawer was wide open, with only two pieces of nougat left inside.
"Just bear with it tonight. We'll go to the kitchen tomorrow," Gary was tired and too lazy to talk. After what had just happened today, he wasn't comfortable with Howard going to the basement alone, as that place was very close to the Slytherin common room.
"No!" Howard let out a delicate gasp. "I can't write my essay without an apple pie."
"Come with me, Gary. I'll share half of that apple pie with you."
Gary looked at Howard's persistent demeanor, sighed helplessly, and picked up his wand. Seeing this, Howard happily bounced up, and the bed groaned under the strain.
It was Saturday, and at ten in the evening, there were still many students in the common room. Lucy was also there, holding a copy of "Advanced Transfiguration Guide." Seeing Gary and Howard walk towards the common room exit, she asked in surprise, "Going out this late?"
Ever since Dumbledore became Principal, Hogwarts had canceled its weekend curfew.
"Howard needs to go downstairs to get something to eat, and I'm worried, so I'm going with him," Gary explained.
"Then you two come back as soon as possible," Lucy said, then lowered her head again, absorbed in the world of her book.
The two left the tower and ran downstairs, encountering a few Gryffindors out exploring on the way.
"This is the kitchen," Howard led Gary to the basement.
The atmosphere here immediately became dim and eerie. Compared to Gryffindor, students from Slytherin and Hufflepuff preferred to stay in their common rooms for entertainment.
They walked along the wide stone corridor in the basement until they reached the corner of the corridor leading to the Hufflepuff common room. Howard stopped in front of a mural depicting a silver bowl filled with fruit.
"This is it?" Gary had never been to the Hogwarts kitchen and was a bit curious.
Howard nodded, extended his plump hand, and tickled the pear. The pear let out a "giggling" sound, then transformed into a very large green doorknob.
"Wow…" Gary exclaimed like the Little Prince.
Howard pulled the green doorknob, opened the mural, and led Gary inside.
The kitchen interior was very large, also featuring four long tables like the Great Hall upstairs. At ten at night, there were only a few House-elves inside, cleaning with mops and brooms.
"Oh, dear Mr. White!" a House-elf saw them, dropped its broom, and ran over. "Long time no see. How may I help you?"
The House-elf was scrawny and tiny, with large, bat-like ears, tennis-ball-sized bulging eyes, and a long, flat nose.
It bowed deeply, its waist bending until its big nose almost touched the ground before stopping.
"I need an apple pie," Howard instructed.
The House-elf looked left and right, then said with difficulty, "I'm very sorry, Mr. White, all of today's apple pies are gone, and there are no raw ingredients left. It's all Hoen's fault, Hoen cannot fulfill Mr. White's request!"
The House-elf zipped to the wall and started banging its big head against it.
"Hey, hey!" Howard and Gary panicked. "Stop it! Hoen, I'm not blaming you!" Howard quickly explained, otherwise, the House-elf would end up with a bleeding head.
The House-elf finally stopped its self-abuse and turned around, a large bruise already forming on its forehead.
The surrounding House-elves paid no attention, completely ignoring the injured Hoen, and slowly moved towards the end of the kitchen with their mops.
"Look what Hoen found!" Hoen was about one meter tall, just the right height to see the cabinet under the kitchen counter. "There's still one apple pie here!"
It shouted excitedly, holding up the apple pie and running to Howard. "Hoen did not disappoint Mr. White, Hoen did it!"
"Like this…" Hoen touched the pie, found it a bit cold, and carried it to the counter. It snapped its fingers, and sparks flew from the stove. It placed the pie in a pan to heat it.
"Thank you so much, Hoen," Howard, hungry, took the warmed apple pie and expressed his sincere gratitude.
"Don't say thank you, don't say it!" Hoen's body uncontrollably rushed towards the wall again.
"Stop, Hoen!" Howard, now with food, reacted quickly, saving Hoen from the fate of banging its head against the wall.
Two minutes later, Howard, carrying a bag containing the apple pie, and Gary were sent out of the kitchen by the teary-eyed House-elf Hoen.
When Howard and Gary reached the fourth floor, they saw a white-haired person slowly walking up the stairs.
This scene was slightly eerie. The figures in the portraits on both sides of the stairs were all asleep at this time, and there were only the three of them in the entire corridor.
Illuminated by the dim yellow light, the white-haired person had their back to them, their white hair hanging motionless down to their waist.
