Chapter 24: Chapter 24: Successful Transfiguration
"Alright then," Slughorn said, feeling a bit regretful, "Here, Severus, take these."
He pulled a handful of daffodil petals from his pocket and stuffed them into Snape's hand. "Don't be shy."
Gary watched Snape's face turn from white to red to Black, and he was secretly delighted.
Slughorn was a heavy drinker. As soon as Gary and Snape finished cleaning the Ariot tree leaves, he sat in his leather chair and started drinking.
How could he drink alone without sharing with his students?
Slughorn wasn't one to hog things when it came to small matters. He gave Snape and Gary each a large cup of non-alcoholic butterbeer.
The two of them were swayed by his bluster, with phrases like "There's another cup after this one" and "Happy hour is about to begin." In the end, they obediently finished the large cup of butterbeer before leaving.
"I'll remember you, Shafiq." As soon as Slughorn closed the door, Snape reverted to his cold demeanor.
"Hmph," Gary scoffed, "Do you really think highly of yourself? Do you remember me because you want me to be grateful to you?" He felt that Snape, who disrespected others, didn't deserve his respect either.
Snape felt that this kid was a bit sharp-tongued, unlike those two idiots, Potter and Black, who only knew how to solve problems with their fists.
He didn't want to argue with Gary; even if he won, Gary wouldn't give him the Potion book in his hand.
Snape snorted coldly and turned to go back to the Slytherin common room.
Gary's lips curved upwards, and he took the Potion book back to Alfrina to claim credit.
Halloween had arrived, and the Great Hall's decorations were completely new.
Hundreds of fake bats fluttered on the walls and ceiling, and hundreds of pumpkin-shaped lighting candles hung above the Great Hall. The orange pumpkins were hollowed out, a candle placed inside, and then a mouth and two eyes were carved into the skin, making them look quite frightening.
Howard, as expected, once again defended his dignity as Hogwarts's number one foodie.
He led a group of Ravenclaw lower-year students to clear out the crispy crackers from the kitchen in advance.
Today, the school allowed students to wear their own Halloween costumes. Gary changed into a robe with some scarlet, while Al and Kona wore red devil horn headpieces and even had two sharp little fangs in their mouths, looking cute and playful.
Aside from James and his three friends throwing Snape into a toilet in the lavatory, there was no other notable news during Halloween. The uneventful days continued until mid-November.
The Quidditch season began.
This was an indispensable diversion in Hogwarts's monotonous term.
Both boys and girls were obsessed with this sport; they needed a venue and an activity to release their excess energy.
Gary and Howard went to watch the Ravenclaw versus Slytherin opening match once, but they lost interest within twenty minutes and returned to their dorm.
Gary didn't like Quidditch to begin with, which was related to his frail body and fear of heights since childhood; Howard liked competitive sports, but he preferred watching people sweat on the field while he sat in the stands eating fries. He felt that Quidditch wasn't as interesting as football. When the players flew around in the sky, it was very hard on the eyes; without binoculars, you couldn't even see the players' names.
Furthermore, Ravenclaw's Quidditch matches were truly unsightly. There wasn't a single "muscle-bound person like Potter" in the entire house, to quote Lily directly. They participated in Quidditch primarily for entertainment, to get some fresh air after studying runes for too long.
The players weren't strong, but the Ravenclaw spectators were very tolerant. They knew their team's capabilities; it was just a group of bookworms playing around, and who knew, maybe one day they could also go up and fly a few rounds to relax.
The entire Ravenclaw match was a one-sided beating. The Slytherin male players were tall and strong, and their practiced tactics were skillful and orderly. Their Seeker perfectly controlled the time (to allow the score difference to continue to widen). An hour after Gary and Howard returned to their dorm, the match finally ended, with Nance Gro successfully catching the Golden Snitch under the opponents' noses with the help of his teammates' cover.
360:160, Ravenclaw was crushed by two hundred points.
However, the Quidditch players happily returned to the common room. After a good night's sleep, they would shake off the gloom of defeat and continue to be lively, eagerly answering questions in class.
Originally, James, Sirius, Alfrina, and Gary always stuck together. However, ever since that argument on the second day of school, the relationship between Gary and Sirius had dropped to freezing point. Gary knew that after Black said those hurtful words, it would be impossible for the two of them to reconcile.
Now the four were split into two groups: Al, Gary, Howard, and Kona in Ravenclaw, and James, Sirius, Lupin, and Peter in Gryffindor.
Sometimes when Gary met James in the corridor, he would only nod, and James would give an awkward smile. After a long time without communication, everyone had found new friends, and their previous friendship naturally faded.
…
"Well done, Mr. Shafiq!" Professor McGonagall walked to Gary's desk and picked up a crystal button from his desk.
"A perfect Ravenclaw Raven," Professor McGonagall announced to the class. "Ten points to Ravenclaw."
This was the most points Gary had earned for Ravenclaw this semester. Professor McGonagall rarely awarded double-digit points to lower-year students.
A triumphant smile appeared on his handsome face, not just for the points, but also for his first time transforming a silver needle into a crystal button without using his wand's consciousness, relying purely on his own magic.
As for the Ravenclaw Raven on the button, Gary had directed his wand to engrave it.
His body couldn't precisely control magic output, so such delicate work had to rely on his vine wood wand.
"Well done, Mr. Potter, Mr. Black, five points each to Gryffindor." Professor McGonagall walked to the back row and saw James and Sirius's works.
"Miss Evans and Miss Greengrass, five points each."
Professor McGonagall was very satisfied with their practice results. There were many talented individuals in Transfiguration in the class, and the Gryffindor quartet, Lily, Gary, and Alfrina, were all good at Transfiguration, belonging to the group of people who were both talented and willing to work hard.
"There's one week left until the Christmas holiday. For those of you who have successfully transformed a silver needle into a button, congratulations, you will have no Transfiguration homework for Christmas."
Professor McGonagall rarely smiled. As the term was about to end, she found this class to be the most talented group of students she had ever taught, and she didn't mind easing some of their academic pressure.
Many students cheered. With the incentive, they were highly motivated; no one wanted to be cooped up at home during the long Christmas holiday, picking their feet and racking their brains to write essays.
