Chapter 56: Chapter 56: Poseidon’s Choice
Swear on the River Styx?
Originally, the goddess Styx hadn't possessed the authority over oaths. But because of her unwavering support for Zeus during the Titanomachy, Zeus had granted her that domain.
Any god who swore by the Styx would be bound by that oath. Zeus himself was no exception.
If Acheron was invoking the Styx, then there was no doubt. She meant business.
She was offering Poseidon the olive branch of cooperation, with the position of Sea Queen as her price.
Acheron would help Poseidon deal with the ocean's river gods. In return, the title of Sea Queen would make her the most exalted figure in these seas.
After all, the Sea Queen wasn't just a pretty face; like the Queen of the Heavens, she would share Poseidon's dominion over the seas.
Of course, Poseidon had always hoped to find a Sea Queen who was just a pretty face. Someone ornamental, easier to keep under control.
The example of Zeus and Hera had taught her well: choosing a partner with a temper you could manage was crucial.
"You have my word. All I seek is the title of Sea Queen. I won't meddle in your affairs."
Eros had anticipated this worry of Poseidon's and had made sure Acheron's prepared lines covered it perfectly.
And yet… Poseidon's expression didn't soften.
The whole mess between Zeus and Hera had taught her another hard truth: never take a woman at her word.
Hadn't her once carefree little sister ended up trapped by picking the wrong Queen of Heaven? These days, she couldn't even sneak off with a mortal without it becoming a headache.
No way would Poseidon make the same mistake.
"Of course, I don't mean this would just be a political alliance either."
Acheron shifted, the jewelry on her body chiming softly as it clashed with the rippling waves of her flesh.
Water splashed. Silver trinkets clinked. The exotic, seductive ensemble shimmered before Poseidon's eyes.
"As Sea Queen, I would fully embrace my duties."
The meaning in her tone was thick as honey as she leaned closer.
The maids who had been attending Poseidon stepped aside with perfect tact, clearing a path for Acheron.
In terms of beauty, Acheron was flawless, one of Oceanus' daughters, after all. It was only her foul nature that had tarnished her appeal.
But now, with that nature suppressed and Eros' exotic design adding that extra thrill of novelty, Poseidon couldn't help but waver.
If Acheron weren't so insistent on the Styx oath, Poseidon would have caved already, tossed out a casual promise and sampled the goods before worrying about the rest.
Her instincts and reason warred in her mind.
Instinct urged her on. The goddess was offering herself up, new, different. How could she not try it? At least once?
Reason held her back. It all looked so perfect… but who knew what Acheron would do as Sea Queen? That title was not something to give lightly.
She should just have her fun and bolt.
Then, another thought began to rise, deeper and more elusive.
Poseidon, didn't you recently resist your mother's demands?
Hadn't she vowed to clean up her act? To stop falling for these reckless temptations?
And if she were honest… lately, she'd been far more curious about Eros.
A male. A male with extraordinary charm.
Ever since she'd seen him, everyone else felt a little dull by comparison.
Especially knowing he bore Zeus' mark, that thought alone sent shivers through her.
And yet, with this offering right in front of her, she couldn't quite push it away.
Hidden in the steam, Eros watched, waiting for Poseidon's choice.
Even if she refused today, he wasn't worried. There would be other chances.
No one resists temptation forever.
So long as Poseidon remained in this Silver Paradise he'd crafted for her, she'd keep facing these tests.
He had set the perfect snare. No way could she hold out against endless hints and offers.
Even Hera lingered in the shadows, sharing the bath with Eros just to witness Poseidon's downfall firsthand.
Not that Hera really had to target Poseidon like this. They were blood relatives, after all.
But Poseidon had helped Zeus too many times. Letting Leto give birth, sheltering Apollo...
A chance for payback? Hera wouldn't miss it.
And so, two usually scheming adversaries waited together, united by a shared goal, watching Poseidon fall.
"Well then, Lady Sea King? What's your decision?"
Thanks to Eros' coaching, Acheron spoke with poise and command, nudging Poseidon toward a reply.
"Choose: will you make me your Sea Queen or will you refuse?"
"I…"
Poseidon opened her mouth. Resolve hardened in her eyes.
Yes. She would honor what she truly wanted.
"I choose nothing. Only the strong grant choices to the weak."
Waves of power burst outward, scattering the maids. Her hair rose and swirled, snakelike, without a breeze.
"Even if I use you and leave you, what can you do about it?"
Azure ripples spread from her body, a tidal force locking Acheron in place.
"It's you who must choose now: will you yield to me or be forced to yield?"
In the end, Poseidon followed her heart.
The title of Sea Queen? No thanks.
But Acheron herself? That was another matter.
Did those two desires clash? Maybe. Maybe not.
Let Oceanus complain all he wanted. It wasn't like she'd harm Acheron. They were just going to have a little fun.
And besides, wasn't it Acheron who came knocking? How could Poseidon be at fault?
With those thoughts settled, all hesitation left her.
Her Sea King might burst forth, pinning Acheron beneath its force. Countless tendrils rose behind her, confidence radiating from her face.
On these seas, who could defy her?
