Chapter 82: 《God-Tier Kazekage: Building》Chapter 82: The Daimyō's Court
The vast desert stretched endlessly, a sea of lifeless sand—majestic, solemn, and unchanging. Its face was perpetually painted in a single monotonous hue: yellow, yellow, and always the scorching yellow.
It was as if nature had frozen the raging waves and towering tides in an instant, leaving them eternally motionless.
But upon closer inspection, one could notice rows of densely packed footprints in this seemingly static sea of sand, footprints not yet swallowed by the swirling dust storms.
Following these hoofprints for a long distance, one would suddenly encounter a breathtaking and awe-inspiring sight.
Using this path of hoofprints as a boundary, on one side lay an endless expanse of barren desert—lifeless and desolate, evoking a profound sense of despair.
On the other side, however, was a scene of rippling water, lush greenery, and vibrant life. The stark contrast between these two natural landscapes merged seamlessly, creating a stunning spectacle that left travelers in awe.
It was enough to make the weary and parched wanderer question whether the scene before them was merely a mirage, a cruel joke played by the Creator.
If viewed from above, one would see a vast, shimmering lake spreading out ahead. Waterfowl chirped joyfully over the lake's surface, as if singing praises for this miracle.
This place was none other than the location of the Daimyō's court—the largest oasis in the Land of Wind.
To the north of the lake, amidst the densely packed houses, stood the most grand and luxurious palace.
The palace had three levels, its walls painted in a pristine white, adorned with blue patterns for contrast. At its far end, near the riverbank, stood a structure elevated half a level above the rest.
This structure appeared to be coated in platinum paint, reflecting dazzling rays of light under the sun, making it difficult for passing commoners to look directly at it.
Flanking the structure were two pointed towers, seamlessly integrated with the grandest building.
Inside this magnificent building, the head of the Genpei family, accompanied by a group of guards, was unloading large chests from their shoulders and placing them on the ground.
"Lord Daimyō, these are the earnings from the trade caravans in recent years. Everything is here!"
The head of the Genpei family stood respectfully below, gazing up at the Daimyō at the top of the staircase.
The Daimyō of the Land of Wind was a middle-aged man in his forties, with a round face and dressed in a dark brown silk robe.
He sported a neatly trimmed beard on both sides of his mouth and chin. His squinting eyes and faint, ever-present smile gave him the appearance of an exceptionally shrewd yet amicable merchant.
"Oh, no need to be so formal! We're all family here! You've worked hard, truly hard..."
The Daimyō quickly stood up, descended the staircase, and helped the slightly bowing Genpei family head straighten up. After patting him on the shoulder, the Daimyō eagerly began inspecting the contents of the chests.
"Lord Daimyō!"
"The Kazekage of Sunagakure and his subordinates have been growing increasingly defiant lately."
"Previously, you explicitly ordered the governance rights of Asuka District and Ryukawa District to be reclaimed, but he has yet to hand them over!"
"Ryukawa District's territory is substantial, with dense river networks, a pleasant climate, and lush forests. Even the air there is exceptionally fresh!"
The Genpei family head hesitated for a moment before speaking.
The Daimyō, who had been happily examining the treasures, immediately froze. A cold glint flashed in his half-open eyes.
"That Kazekage is far too insolent!"
"This one-nation, one-village system was jointly established by the Five Great Nations. If any village disobeys, they will face collective retaliation from the other nations."
"Doesn't the Kazekage understand this?"
"Or is he testing my resolve?"
The Genpei family head promptly added fuel to the fire: "How could he not understand?"
"This is deliberate defiance! It's clear he intends to slowly wrest both economic and political power from your hands!"
"I've already sent people to investigate his activities in Ryukawa District and Asuka District."
"He's been sending people disguised as officials from the Daimyō's court, using your name to impose heavy taxes and levies in those districts, causing widespread resentment among the populace."
"Once he tarnishes the reputation of the Daimyō's court, he'll swoop in to abolish those taxes and win over the people!"
"His treacherous ambitions are as clear as day!"
Smack!
"He dares?!"
The Daimyō's eyes widened instantly, filled with both shock and fury.
In his mind, the governance of the nation—including not just economic and political power but also military and mission delegation rights—rightfully belonged to the Daimyō.
He had long sought to reclaim these powers from Sunagakure, which was why he had previously planted the Genpei family head among Sunagakure's upper echelons.
But the Third Kazekage was exceptionally cunning. After mastering Magnet Release and Iron Sand, iron sand had become one of Sunagakure's major exports.
Later, they developed Gold Sand through Magnet Release, enabling efficient gold mining and further boosting Sunagakure's economy.
This had led to the current situation spiraling out of control.
"Izake..."
"How is your faction's development coming along?"
"If you and the Takahashi clan initiate a coup... what are the odds of success?"
The Daimyō's eyes narrowed again, his tone unusually low.
The Genpei family head's heart skipped a beat at these words. A coup had never been part of his plans.
He hurriedly replied, "That Kazekage recently restructured the ANBU. Who knows how many people he's already placed in it?"
"Moreover, both he and his students are extraordinarily powerful."
"If we were to initiate a direct conflict, our chances of victory... would be very slim..."
After hesitating for a moment, the Genpei family head chose to speak honestly. In his view, it was better to unite with the other Daimyōs to pressure the other Hidden Villages and collectively force the Kazekage to relinquish control.
After all, if the Kazekage set a precedent, it might embolden other Kage with ambitions to follow suit.
This cause-and-effect relationship was something the Daimyōs of the other four nations could surely understand.
The Daimyō's eyes narrowed once more. His earlier good mood from inspecting the treasures had completely vanished. He paced back and forth within the palace.
Guards stood in rows on either side of the hall. The conversation between the Daimyō and the Genpei family head was not concealed from them, as those present were all trusted confidants.
However, as the Daimyō passed by the captain of the guard standing at the forefront—
Shing!
A flash of bright steel sliced through the air.
A massive diagonal gash appeared on the Daimyō's body. The force of the blade was so immense that it nearly cleaved him in two.
Splurt!
Blood sprayed violently, instantly dyeing the guard in front of him a deep crimson!
