Chapter 6: A Hidden Talent?
The academy hall was packed.
Voices filled the air—nervous chatter, excited whispers.
"Did you hear? Hudson got an A-grade wind talent!"
"No way! That timid kid? Man, he's untouchable now."
"Yeah, even the academy president pulled him aside."
Kieran tuned them out, his eyes locked on the massive stone dais at the center of the room.
From the side, Jane leaned casually against the wall, giving him a reassuring thumbs-up.
"Don't worry," she mouthed.
Kieran gave her a small nod.
As the others noticed his presence, heads began to turn one after another.
"Shit, he's here! Kieran... Who knows what he'll awaken? I'm calling it—he's getting an S-ranked talent. I'm betting my night meal on it!" a student whispered to his friend.
"Hell no, I'm not taking that bet—it's obvious," the friend replied quickly. "He was the best in combat classes and every other class we had. Even in realm training!"
"Pfft, so what? Even if he gets an S-ranked talent, I'm sure Frank will still come out on top. He's from an Origin Family, after all. Talents don't come from physical skill—it's all luck. Kieran's just an introverted nobody. Watch. He won't amount to much."
The hall buzzed with anticipation—some rooting for Kieran's success, others eager to see him fail.
Every word felt like a weight on his chest.
Both hope and doubt clashed in the air around him, tightening the knot in his stomach.
'I have to do this… With a good talent, I can finally make real money… live a decent life outside this academy. Come on… I just need something good.'
Kieran prayed silently, gripping the hem of his sleeve.
The dean, overhearing the murmurs, immediately recognized the star student's name and his eyes lit up with excitement. Glancing down at the long list of names, he noticed Kieran's was still a bit further down.
He didn't hesitate. He skipped ahead.
The academy dean stepped forward, clearing his throat, and the room gradually fell silent.
"Kieran Marcoth," he announced.
The hall froze.
A heavy hush blanketed the crowd. Conversations died mid-sentence. Heads turned. Eyes locked on him.
The weight of that single name pressed down like a mountain.
Kieran stepped forward, his heart hammering in his chest. Every gaze, every whispered doubt, every expectation followed his every step.
'I've always done what Jane told me… I stood up for others, I never let Frank's group push people around… I hope—please—I hope that counts for something.'
The thought rang over and over in his mind.
He wasn't the strongest.
Not yet.
But Jane had taught him something far more valuable:
Stand for the weak.
She once told him that good deeds brought good karma—that if he stayed true to himself, the world would repay him. Somehow, he clung to that belief.
He reached the dais.
The academy president gave a respectful nod, then gestured to the glowing crystal orb at the center.
"Place your hand on the orb," he said, his voice gentle but firm. "And let destiny take its course."
Kieran exhaled slowly, steadying his breath.
'This is it. My moment. My chance to change everything.'
He stepped forward.
His fingers touched the orb.
A blinding flash of light exploded through the room.
And in that instant—
Everything changed.
A blinding light shot out—so bright that everyone instinctively shielded their eyes.
Even the dean raised a hand to block the glare, and Kieran squinted, using his second hand to shield himself.
Gradually, the light began to fade.
One by one, people lowered their hands and returned their gazes—only to be met with pure shock and amazement… mixed with growing curiosity.
Some stood frozen, their mouths hanging open.
But above all—
Every single eye in the hall was fixed on Kieran.
This was the first time in the academy's history that the crystal orb had ever shone so brightly.
The academy dean rose to his feet, his hands trembling uncontrollably as he considered the impossible.
'Is this it? A student who actually awakened an SSS-ranked talent!'
The old man's fingers quivered with sheer excitement, his heart pounding wildly in his chest. He could hardly wait to see what the orb would reveal.
In the crowd, Frank felt his breath catch. A cold, suffocating weight settled deep in his bones as panic spread through him like poison.
'No… no, it can't be. This light—this can't be real. It has to be a mistake. If he actually awakens an SSS-ranked talent… my life… my life will be worse than death.'
He clenched his fists so tightly his knuckles cracked, his teeth grinding together as he waited for the results.
The once rowdy hall had become silent as a graveyard. The blinding light intensified, washing over the entire room as the air grew thick with tension.
Even Jane, who had been casually leaning against the wall, stood upright now—her eyes wide with disbelief.
Every single person held their breath.
And then—finally—the results materialized on a glowing screen above the orb:
[Kieran Marcoth.]
[Talents: Hidden.]
[Rank: SSS-rank.]
[Class: ???]
For a heartbeat, no one moved.
Gasps broke out first—small, breathless sounds of disbelief.
And then—chaos.
"He got it! An SSS-rank talent!"
"Hell! That's only the fifth time in history something like this has happened!"
"Damn it! I should've been his best friend—who's gonna dare mess with him now?!"
The hall exploded into deafening cheers and frantic screams. Students clutched each other, their voices overlapping as excitement and envy took over the room.
It was a moment none of them had expected.
Even with the orb's blinding light, no one had dared to assume it would reveal an SSS-ranked talent. The odds of such an occurrence were so astronomically low that some scholars believed it was nothing more than legend.
To find one in their lifetime… it was like finding a single grain of gold in an endless desert.
This wasn't just an awakening. This was instant ascension—a direct path to power, wealth, and the highest ranks of influence. Every major faction in the world would fight tooth and nail to claim someone like this.
While the students shouted in disbelief—some genuinely overjoyed, others green with envy—the teachers exchanged glances. Their faces darkened, the weight of the revelation settling in like a storm cloud.
The dean's expression tightened, his frown deepening as his eyes flicked to the glowing words on the screen.
'A hidden talent…?'
