Chapter 716: The Spy Detection Artifact.
"So if the person is in a Golden Core Realm, they can rewrite our core beliefs and memories." San Ji scratched the back of his head with a confused look on his face. "Is that even possible?"
The other four, including the pervy old man, Qiuan Yu, looked at him with a blank look on their faces.
Hong Mei rolled her eyes and tightly wrapped her fingers around the arms of the chair.
"And you believe these people have targeted our disciples and have controlled them?" With her teeth gnashing against each other, still ireful of the loss of an elder of her sect.
Wuhan nodded silently, making her snarl in annoyance, "I still do not believe your words. Did you come here to show this so we will give up the control of our sects to you?"
"If they can control us, why have they not directly targeted us, the sect leaders?" XingJian did not mock her for her actions or words anymore, as she could sense her rage at the loss of the elder.
Wuhan let her finish, sitting straight in the chair, poised with dominance and authority. Once the redhead sect mistresses stopped speaking, he gave his ultimatum: "I have already laid out everything you should know about the cult." He leaned back in the chair and allowed the warmth in his voice to drop a little, "But make no mistake, this is not any attempt to make you give me the control of your sects."
Those words made all five leaders look at him with surprise and confusion, which vanished when the next line of words left his mouth.
"Whether you like it or not, your sects will be answering to this emperor, and you all will act as I tell you to." Without caring about the tense individuals around him, Wuhan stored the device back into the ring. "There is a cult that poses a great threat not only to my empire but also to the whole world."
"And I will be damned if I allowed them to act as they pleased in my territory." At this moment, the charisma of the Emperor of the Feng Empire. They saw why he became the ruler despite the problems that were thrown in his way. "There has already been one tragedy in the empire because the internal order of the empire was not in line when we faced a threat."
Wuhan's voice audibly grew heavy, making the few of the strongest cultivators hear the beating of their own scared hearts.
"You will remain the acting leaders on the surface, but your sects will answer to the empire when you are needed." Wuhan's finger tapped on the table in rhythm, matching the drumming beats of their hearts. His indifferent gaze landed on Hong Mei as he added, "Before you try to decline, think whose place you have built your sect on and who allowed you to create your force there."
Hong Mei's eyes visibly shook as she snapped her inquisitive, bloodshot gaze towards Chen Wuji as if asking if what he said was true or not, but regretfully for her, the man nodded with a defeated sigh.
"Our predecessors signed the contract with the empire to take the portions of blessed lands to create the sect upon, and in exchange they would send tributes to the empire every year and lend help whenever it was needed." His little, slouched figure showed that he was not able to fight Wuhan anymore.
"We have already allowed you to go on for years without bothering you with anything. Some of you have even violated the contract by not sending your required taxes." Wuhan glanced at San Ji, Quian Yu, and Hong Mei when he said those words, making them flinch in their seats.
"You are threatening to take away our lands if we don't follow your demands?" Hong Mei let out a strained, bitter laugh, looking like someone who had been told that she had suddenly been enslaved.
The others also looked displeased with the news, but they still did not have pride that soared to heaven, unlike the redhead.
"I am threatening to do worse if you become the reason this empire suffers." The emperor replied with no hesitation, showing how far he was willing to go. As the fiery woman seemed to have lost all of the glow in her eyes, Wuhan took out another thing from his storage ring and placed it on the table.
Clank!
It was a small, oval-shaped device that looked like the mirror the cult members were seen using to find talented individuals to control.
"This is?" XingJian asked with a hollow voice, still burdened by the bomb he had dropped on them. She could understand his reasoning, but at their levels, being told what to do like some lowly cultivators with no backings stung a little.
"This is the device our experts have come up with that can be used to track those who have been converted by the cult." Wuhan's voice grew a little warmer as he explained about the mirror-like object placed on the table. "With this you can weed out the spies in your ranks."
Chen Wuji, who seemed worried for the woman sitting across from him and angered at Wuhan for making her like this, suddenly asked coldly, "What is the point of doing that? Is there a way to make them go back to how they were?"
Wuhan looked at him impassively for a second before replying, "Sadly, we have not yet found a way to make that happen. The curse directly affects the core of the soul, and you all know better than anyone else how fragile and difficult working with the soul can be."
The silence returned to the table as everyone looked at the table silently.
Wuhan could feel the weight of their thoughts and spoke up again, "You should know that you are not the only one who is suffering from this ordeal."
Everyone got confused hearing his words before a look of realization dawned on them all.
"The disappearances that have been happening in the capital city and the suspicious deaths of the nobles." San Ji muttered in shock, his heavy body leaning in on the table, "…that was all the work of—"
Wuhan nodded with a serious look on his face. "I have sent a special task force to weed out all the compromised individuals using this very artifact."
Seeing XingJian staring at the special artifact on the table, Hong Mei also looked at it, and so did the others.
Noticing their gazes, Wuhan raised his hands and tapped on the mirror twice, bringing it to life.
A pulse of purple energy churned on the surface of the glass, spreading outwards before completing a circle around the delicate metal frame on the edge. The energy did simply vanish, and the mirror lit up dimly, enough to not attract attention from those who were not aware of it.
Mysterious gray clouds took over the reflection of the ceiling of the room; they filled every corner of the glass.
Soon, a vague image of the room took shape from the clouds before six shapes illuminated on the dull surface. Seeing the shapes, the look on everyone's face shifted a little.
The avatar at the bottommost was the brightest, burning with bright azure radiance; a vague shape of the seed could be seen in the deepest parts of the silhouette.
On its right was a pale blue flickering flame in a vague human shape. This one belonged to Chen Wuji, sitting to his right. Next to him was a red, fuming flame like Hong Mei.
Wuhan turned his attention to his left; there was San Ji, burning with the yellow willpower and passion. A little to his left was the off-white depiction of the pervy old man.
As his eyes moved along to the next person, Wuhan explained calmly, "As you can see, these obscure images are the representation of each person present in the room. I will not go into detail, but you are good to go." Wuhan's eyes narrowed at the last hazy figure before raising his head to look at the confused-looking Xingjian in the eye, "As long as your soul does not appear black in this mirror."
Buzz!
His words were like a buzz of current that coursed through the bodies of the other four sect leaders. Their eyes snapped from the last black soul image on the mirror towards XingJian, whom it represented.
The air around the table shifted as all the closed fists in the room shone with a pool of solid blue energy.
XingJian looked around the room without showing any signs of panic. "Is the emperor now just making evidence out of thin air?" She let out a dark chuckle before continuing, "Since we are refusing to comply, does his majesty want to set an example?"
"Before this, I admired and even held feelings for his majesty, but now doing something like this…" She spoke in a low voice, dropping the smile on her face. "I wonder how low you will fall to make us bend to your will."
