Chapter 715: Cleaning The House [2]
San Ji slowly stood up from the ground and took his seat at the table while keeping a safe distance from the man. His eyes would dart towards the emperor from time to time, traced with panic and shock.
He sat down on the chair like a docile kid, too shy to say anything. XingJing was the first one to snap out of her daze before stars appeared in her eyes at the sight of Wuhan, the emperor.
Hong Mei was frozen in her seat, while inwardly she was panicking and ready to lash out at any moment.
"It is very hard…" Wuhan spoke, and they all stilled; had they been more unused to his presence, they would have flinched. The stern-looking emperor unhurriedly looked at each one of them and continued, "to get you all in a single room."
"So I should be thanking you for this opportunity." His eyes landed on Chen Wuji when those words came out of his mouth.
Chen Wuji did not find his words humorous, even if they were, which he was not sure of. But he still let out a strained, self-mocking chuckle.
"What did you want to talk about?" Hong Mei sharply interjected with a pose of arrogance and fearlessness, but beneath the table her legs were jerking restlessly.
Wuhan stared at her for a second, and the movements of her leg increased enough to make little sounds as her leg moved up and down.
Wuhan raised an eyebrow at the woman, looking at her with a deadpan gaze. Her cheeks flushed in embarrassment, but Hong Mei kept up her fierce act for some reason.
"Idiot." XingJian muttered under her breath, and the redhead sect mistress snapped towards her only to see the exquisite woman looking at Wuhan with a smile on her face. She looked in a trance, as if those words had not come out of her mouth.
"Grrr…." Hong Mei growled silently but did not dare to call out the woman right in front of Wuhan. She had already used up all of her daring energy during the tournament Wuhan had hosted.
Wuhan narrowed his eyes and mentioned the thing she feared he would. "Be glad that I am not holding you accountable for the shit you pulled at the tournament right here and now."
Instead he looked at all of them once more before saying, "I am here to warn all of you."
XingJian, like the others, shifted uncomfortably in her seat, imagining that he would make a threat to their sects, demanding to have them surrender to him.
"Your sects are in danger."
Those words did not come out as a shock from the man sitting before them; Hong Mei even grumbled to herself, 'Yeah, and the source of danger is you. Tell us something new…'
Even though she did not say those words out loud, Wuhan looked at her abruptly for some reason and narrowed his eyes before adding, "And it's not me who is coming after your sects."
And these words caught all of their attention.
Chen Wuji squinted and leaned forward on the table, asking inquisitively, "What does his majesty mean by that? Is there someone else who is targeting our sect? Is it the emergence of another sect?"
Several thoughts flashed through his eyes, but he only spoke a little, emphasizing the fact that they had fears that Wuhan wanted to attack their sects.
The first rule at the table of negotiations is to get the attention of the people you want to make a deal with. Seeing that he was theirs, Wuhan relaxed back into his chair. He ignored the sarcastic words of the man with the glasses.
"The threat is already inside your sects," His ambiguous words confused all of them once more. Hong Mei and the buffoon San Ji were at their wit's end.
"Are there threats in the sect?" Old man Quian Yu, the silent, pervy man, finally broke his silence and spoke up in his thin and almost feminine voice.
Wuhan almost thought that one of the women in the room spoke, but he could see the old man from the corner of his eyes.
With a light cough and a heavy voice, he started talking about the past: "It all starts with a very reclusive group that has been developing, festering, and gathering followers through various means like a virus or an epidemic, ready to outburst…"
His voice grew thick with mystery and severity. All five of the sect leaders listened to his words as their faces went through different emotions like a slide show.
It started with curiosity and worry, turned into incredulity and doubts, and finally settled into half-believing and dread.
"Forgive me for saying this… But something like this is too hard for me to believe." Chen Wuji voiced his doubts with a serious look on his face. "A cult that has the power to control someone's thoughts and mind without giving them even the slightest chance to fight back? It feels like a stretch."
The others also agreed with his words; they had also had similar thoughts. Hong Mei even thought he was just messing with their minds to scare them.
But the smarter ones start to doubt if what he said was true after all. Someone like him, who was in power and had a straightforward personality, would do something like this.
Wuhan nodded with an understanding look on his face. "Your doubts are well endowed with reason. I was too doubtful, like you all, once."
He paused and took something out of his storage ring and placed it on the table.
"Then I saw them with my own eyes." He looked around the table and pressed his finger on the thumb-sized device. It looked like a small, oval-shaped device that vibrated at touch.
It shook before a screen appeared on the table, showing images, moving ones.
'Fortunately, Noah could extract some of his targeted memories and gave a copy of them to me.' He watched, along with others, the scene of their first encounter with the cult in the unknown domain.
Then it directly went to the hidden volcano where Noah rescued several people and the disciples from Wuhan's sect.
Seeing the familiar spot, Hong Mei's eyes widened.
"That is right beside my sect…" She mumbled to herself, making others turn to look at her with worry.
Then came the memory of the fight with the woman who kidnapped Song Liu and the others outside the imperial capital.
"This is…" Chen Wuji gasped in shock and leaned back in the chair, looking at Wuhan as he nodded.
"It's right outside the capital." He confirmed what the man was thinking: "I have not revealed this to the world, but I am telling you all right now, I have formed my own force to deal with this threat of the Red Dawn Cult."
"Isn't that too much, your majesty?" XingJian tilted her head in confusion as she asked, "I mean, sure they are dangerous, but to create a special force and go to all this trouble just to deal with a lowly cult that hides."
"Indeed, it feels a bit over the top." Even the smart Chen Wuji looked at Wuhan, waiting for his response.
Wuhan stayed silent for a while, moving to the next video where the attack on the sect was shown. The scale of the battle and even the use of spirit beasts left everyone speechless.
Finally the emperor spoke up, "This is no ordinary cult, and that person was not the strongest of their forces, and I don't think that was his full battle prowess."
No one said anything, still staring at the screen with different emotions.
Tense, Hong Mei shook her head, trying to make sense of what she was seeing.
"This has to be a forgery. Why are the faces of the people beside the cult member blurred, and how do we even know this even happened in reality?" Her words were reckless and were spoken in the spur of the moment, but seeing Wuhan did not seem to mind it, Chen Wuji heaved a long sigh of relief while XingJian merely shook her head.
"And why was one of them an elder from my sect?" Maybe it was because Wuhan said nothing, but her voice started to rise. "And who was it that killed her?! If you don't tell me, the alchemist association would be forced to move, and that is something even someone like you can't afford to offend."
Wuhan stared back into her eyes and mercilessly replied, "Yes, the elder of your sect had already fallen. Yes, she was killed by one of the members of MY force."
Wuhan paused there, his eyelids dropped a little, and the atmosphere in the room dropped a little.
"But don't you dare threaten me." The risen Hong Mei slowly sank back into her chair, fidgeting. "I can afford to offend the Alchemist Association even if they are involved."
He declared releasing a bit of his aura, but it vanished as soon as it came.
"But the death of your elder was not something that happened without a reason." Wuhan relaxed seeing Hong Mei trembling in the chair and the tense Chen Wuji, who was ready to defend her at any time.
"For you to realize why I say that her death was inevitable, you must first understand what the curse they use is and how it works."
The tense atmosphere in the room was replaced by the heaviness of the incoming dangers as Wuhan slowly revealed things he knew about and was willing to share.
