Chapter 712: Hemes's Penance
Hemes was the unspoken leader of the generals. The priestess praised him for being the most coolheaded in the direst of the situations. Even if the others had problem personalities, he was known to be the mediator.
Someone who would keep others in line and prevent them from making mistakes that would enrage the priestess.
"I—I used the power to compel the crowd temporarily to escape alive."
So when they heard these words coming out of his mouth, the four generals who knew the man for the longest could not believe what they were hearing.
Is this the same Hemes we know?!
This thought was ringing in each of their heads as they wondered how someone like him could make a mistake like that.
"You did what?" The priestess moved in her chair and raised her voice sharply. Hemes trembled under her horrifying gaze. Following her words, a boundless pressure enveloped the room.
Creakkkk!!!
Walls cracked under the pressure; the chandelier that covered the entire ceiling like a sea of stars shook frenziedly. The hanging lights that had been turned off from the start, except for a few parts, shattered one by one.
The sparkling glass fell over the generals like a meteor shower, but they were too frozen and scared to care about it.
The aura coming from the priestess's body was enough to bring all of the powerhouses that many in the world fear to their knees.
Yet, in the face of her wrath, no one uttered a word of dissatisfaction.
"Not only did you fail to retrieve the artifact that could have been a great asset to our cause, the very same thing for which you took time off from our main arrangements and went off assuring me that you would bring the weapon back with great confidence." She lashed out at Hemes with a raging voice, and he took it with his head down. "But… now you are telling us that you might have revealed our existence to the world prior to the planned moment?"
Boom!
The pressure in the room vanished all of a sudden and focused directly on Hemes, allowing the other generals to breathe before they passed out from the overwhelming oppression. Hemes felt all the dispersed weight stacked right on him and slammed into the ground.
The floor caved, cobweb-like cracks spreading around his figure. Hemes coughed a mouthful of blood against the cold, hard floor. The prayer bracelet in his hands snapped, and the beads rolled down the surface before they were crushed like the bones in his body.
"I know that… I have committed a grave sin, and I am ready to bear any punishment you grace upon me." Hemes expressed his regret and grievousness in broken words.
Sitting on the throne, the woman looked down at him in disinterest as she coldly announced, "Had it not been for the tremendous amount of resources I have invested in you and us being so close to our final act, I would have killed you on the spot without even giving you the satisfaction of sacrificing for our lord god."
Hemes felt his face turning pale at the devastating statement, but she continued on without waiting for him to speak.
"But for now I will settle for the next best penance I can think of for you." Her cold voice was filled with undeniable authority. "You will spend five years in confined chambers filled with light crystals."
The ground beneath Hemes vanished and was replaced by an abyssal portal that swallowed him whole as the priestess raised her eyes from him and looked in the front while continuing, "And during this time, you will not be allowed to contribute to the cult in any way."
The words reached Hemes's distressed heart as he was swallowed by the darkness. He felt the torment of the punishment before it even began, but in his heart he knew he deserved worse than this.
…
'He must be devastated!' Amon looked at the floor that returned to normal through his mask as a chill ran through his spine. But then he seemed to have thought of something and snapped back at the woman sitting on the throne.
"Your holiness—" Before he could speak further, the woman raised her hand and silenced him.
"I am aware of what you want to say…" She spoke with a strained, cold voice, still enraged with Hemes's actions. "And I have already extracted all the information about the battle from his mind."
With a wave of her thin, willow-like hands, a projection appeared in the middle of the gathered generals. The holographic image showed the images from before Noah exited from the Domain till the scene where Hemes escaped the Temple to save his life.
"Not only did he survive, but he has also grown so much stronger in such a short time." Amon accepted the reality and spoke grimly. His attention was fixed on the face of the golden-haired man that fought a Peak Soul formation Realm cultivator like he was toying with him.
Even when the two of them had fought, he had managed to injure Noah, but now he wondered how the result of their fight would turn out.
"My puppet…" Watching the Embryonic Soul Realm puppet being chained by Xin Yan, he felt a boiling rage in his heart.
"Your Holiness, we need to send two generals to eliminate these two! They will be the greatest threat to our grand plans in the future!" Amon spoke with righteousness, his voice brimming with eagerness to rush there on his own before the woman would even allow him to do so.
And according to his assumption, she would do just that now that they knew how monstrous Noah and Xin Yan's talents were.
But to his and everyone else's surprise, the woman rejected the thought plainly. "No."
The immediate refusal left Amon stumped; before he could even ask for a reason, she revealed it herself.
"For now, the most important thing is for us to hasten the speed of our plans. The world will soon become aware of our existence and the dangers we pose to society." Leaning back in the chair, she announced firmly. "And it won't be long before those people start to send their people to come sniffing around."
"Indeed, if we don't increase our pace, we might face some annoying hiccups later on." The fourth woman in the group, a peach-faced fairy adorned in an adorable pink dress, twirled a paper umbrella of a similar color in her hand and agreed with her. "The most troublesome place would be the Quan Empire. Now I regret allowing Hemes to enter my territory and allowing him to do as he pleases."
She stomped her feet on the ground while clicking her tongue, "But to think that man had messed with the grand plan I had been working on for months. He even had the audacity to crush the pawn I had carefully placed there."
"Saksha," The priestess addressed the great strategist of the cult solemnly, "Forget about targeting the powerhouses in your territory; that will draw attention. For now, you are to move on to the next step. Finish the next stage of the plans for the empire under your control. But be mindful that we are going to take the next major step in our plans within the next 50 years."
"I will be done in 20, your holiness." With an adoring smile, the peach-faced woman twisted her legs and bowed while holding the hem of the pink short gown with her free hand.
Satisfied with her confidence, she turned her attention towards other generals: "As for you, Amon, Helena, and Stella,. Complete the recruiting within 10 years. Take as many space stones as you need… I want to hear that the first phase of 'Void Step' is complete by the end of the next 25 years."
Her voice sent a chill of excitement through their heart. The day they had been preparing for, yearning for, and imagining was finally about to come.
"As for Hemes's territory…" Suddenly the voice of the priestess turned thoughtful. But just then, Saksha stepped forward with a light tap and bowed. "If I may, your Holiness."
Gaining a nod of approval from the empress-like woman, she expressed her ideas openly: "Why not let Song Liu temporarily take over that place? Not only has she managed to reach the peak Golden Core Realm within the past decade or so, but she has also managed to gain the right to take the spot among us as one of the generals."
Seeing her nod in agreement with her words, Saksha's cute face gained an adorable smile as she continued, "This can help her get used to the duties of the general before the time for her to finally act comes. We won't have to strain our heads over a newbie as well."
With a final nod of agreement, the priestess announced, "Very well, you make a sound argument." Turning her attention towards the youngest woman in the group, she asked, "Do you have any objections?" "Do you have any objections?"
"None, your holiness." Song Liu shook her head expressionlessly.
"With that, this meeting is adjourned." Standing up from the throne, she shot Noah's image one final glance and muttered. "You don't have to worry about him. He will be my problem to deal with."
Before anyone could even voice their objection, she asked, "How long did it take me to reach the peak of this world from a weak nobody?"
The eyes of the four generals shook in realization and reverence: "200 years." Amon muttered in shock, as if he had just heard this information for the first time.
"How can a mere nobody match up to my talent when not even a human in the past or the present could catch up to me?" She straightened her back and raised her head with sharp confidence and unshakable dominance. "You all can leave without worry. Helena, you stay."
