Chapter 39: The Proposal

He reached out and held her by the shoulders, firm but gentle. "I can't just take this from you. Not like this."

She blinked. Her brows furrowed slightly, confused.

Qin Wei continued before she could speak. "I know I said thank you, but those words… they're not enough. Not for something like this. I don't have anything worthy to offer you in return. No wealth. No power. No glory."

He looked into her eyes. His grip on her tightened a little.

"But if I'm going to accept this dagger, which is basically the legacy of your master, then I want to give you something that has real weight."

Jiang Ni's breath caught. Her lips parted slightly.

Qin Wei's voice lowered. "Not a title. Not a promise for later. But a place beside me and not behind me. Not as a maid. And certainly not as a servant."

He paused. His next words came out quieter, but each syllable landed like a hammer. "I want you… to be the woman who walks with me from now on. The one who bears my children, one day in the future."

Silence.

Jiang Ni stared at him.

Her lips trembled.

For a moment, she looked almost disoriented, like someone waking from a dream they'd long ago given up on. "Y-Young master…?" she whispered, barely audible.

Qin Wei let go of her shoulders and held out his hand, palm open. "Jiang Ni, will you be my concubine?"

A single tear rolled down her cheek. Then another.

She didn't even wipe them. She just nodded, the motion so small it was almost imperceptible, yet it carried more force than a thousand words.

Qin Wei held her just a little tighter.

Her soft sobs soaked into his chest, but he didn't rush her. The weight of her tears, the trembling in her shoulders, it all hit him harder than he expected.

After a few quiet moments, he spoke again, his voice low and steady. "Unfortunately… I don't have the authority to give you that position. Not yet."

Jiang Ni stiffened ever so slightly in his arms.

"But once Li Xue returns from her sect," he continued, "I'll speak to her. I'll do everything I can to get her permission… and officially instate you as my concubine. As Concubine Jiang."

Her hands, which had been gripping the front of his robe, slowly loosened. She leaned back slightly and covered her face, her shoulders trembling again, but this time from joy.

"Young master…" Her voice cracked. "I… I'm just… happy."

She laughed through her tears, a broken sound of disbelief and overwhelming emotion.

Qin Wei smiled faintly, brushing back a stray strand of hair from her cheek. "Come here."

He opened his arms wider, and she stepped into his embrace again, nestling close as if afraid he'd disappear.

But as his arms wrapped around her once more, the warmth on his face faded, replaced by a bit of guilt.

"She's so sincere… Loyal to a fault. Beautiful in her own way. If I met her back in my world, maybe I'd have asked her out. Date her. Maybe even marry her, if things held together long enough."

But love?

Love was something different.

What he felt now… was a strange mix of guilt and regret.

He didn't hate Jiang Ni, not in the least. But the affection she showered him with, the devotion in her eyes… it wasn't something he had earned. It belonged to Qin Wei. And now that he'd accepted her feelings, he couldn't just walk away from it.

Li Xue… as terrifying as she is, there was a kind of distance there. There's even a way out, too. But Jiang Ni? She's already anchored herself in his story.

He exhaled, brushing his chin gently atop her head. "Alright, I've made my choice. From now on, I'll try my best to understand her. I won't use her like Qin Wei did. I don't repeat the habits of this original host. He never truly understood this girl's love. All he cared about was her body."

To spend time with her, not just in the sheets, but in the quiet moments, on walks, over meals, in laughter, and conversation, this is the life he had decided to choose with Jiang Ni.

The story of Qin Clan's trashy young master has already ended. Whatever he does will be his own story.

He tightened his arms briefly, resting his cheek against her head. "Jiang'er," he murmured, "From now on… I'll take care of you. As best I can."

She didn't say anything in return, just nodded softly against his chest.

A while later;

Jiang Ni's breathing slowed beside him, soft and rhythmic, her slender arm draped over his chest, her body curled protectively against his.

She had fallen asleep with a faint smile on her lips, as if finally at peace after a long time of struggle. The tear marks were also visible on her cheeks.

But Qin Wei's eyes remained open, reflecting the soft blue glow of the holographic screen still hovering silently in the air.

In his hand, the needle-dagger rested cool and light. Its blade shimmered faintly in the darkness, elegant but deadly. Sadly, without inspection skill, he couldn't know its grade or its abilities at all.

But Qin Wei was under the impression that it was for the best. Who knows, if the dagger is really awesome, he might be reluctant to part ways with it?

Spinning the dagger on his hand, Qin Wei stared at the trade request notification. "

He could feel Jiang Ni's warmth against his side. The devotion she had offered him. The sacrifice she made.

If he kept this dagger, he wouldn't have to feel guilty at all. But he really needs those credits in order to win the fight.

He exhaled slowly, shoulders tense, before muttering under his breath. "Let's do this."

With a flick of thought, he accepted the trade.

The dagger vanished from his palm like dust in the wind.

*Ding!

[50,000 credits have been added to the character]

The system dinged softly. Qin Wei didn't even blink.

Without delay, he opened the Library interface. Rows of floating scrolls unfurled in the air, stacked in glowing libraries that extended endlessly into the void.

He ignored the fancy sections, Ren Shu, Xian Shu, and Wuqi Shu.

Instead, he tapped on the first one. Ti Shu – Body Techniques.

If I want to defeat that basta*d, I need powerful close combat techniques. Let's forget about side effects later on. I just need more physical power, and I just know what to purchase for this situation…"

His fingers moved quickly as he browsed.

The endless scrolls glided past his eyes, one after another, until they suddenly stopped.

His hand paused at the Gates of Formation. Surprisingly, it is free.

Qin Wei blinked and, without hesitation, he clicked on purchase.

*Ding!

[Gates of Formation has been added to the character interface]

"Open Character Interface…"

When he scrolled down, just below the Bloodline, there was the word, Qimen Dunjia.

He clicked on it.

A new screen unfolded, and Qin Wei nodded with a sigh. "Yup, I knew it. When would the system give me such a technique for free?"

On the screen, the Gates and their prices are shown individually for unlocking. Fun fact, this is the first one that displayed prices in the form of credits somewhere other than the Library to purchase.
