Chapter 97: Chapter 97: Training and Surprise Attack
The long-drawn-out Hagun Academy selection tournament had finally come to an end, and the official representatives for the Seven Star Sword Art Festival were determined.
Many were surprised by the absence of expected picks like Toudou Touka and Usamaru Renren.
The six selected representatives were: Charles, Stella, Kurogane Ikki, Arisuin Nagi, and the student council's lone remaining member, Kidega Haruka. The final spot went to a girl named Yabure Kikyou.
Yabure Kikyou and her twin sister Yabure Botan had been quite lucky, not encountering any strong opponents until the final round of the selection.
Unfortunately, Yabure Botan's luck ran out when she faced Charles—who ended the match in just three seconds.
After the tournament ended, the school held an official appointment ceremony. Under the gaze of the entire student body, Toudou Touka personally handed the school's flag to Kurogane Ikki as the representative of Hagun Academy.
The ceremony was held a week later because Ikki had been seriously ill during his match against Touka and had recklessly used "Itto Rasetsu." Even with the aid of a regeneration chamber, it took an entire week to fully heal his body.
Meanwhile, the detestable Akaza Mamoru had completely vanished from public view.
After the match, he had attempted to attack the gravely wounded Ikki—only to be struck by Shinomiya Kuroko's Blazer technique. No one knew where he'd been banished, and judging by Shinomiya's expression, he was likely never coming back.
The appointment ceremony ended in late July, just as summer vacation began.
But for those who passed the selection, there would be no relaxing. The Seven Star Sword Art Festival was set to begin in mid-August—just around the corner.
As per custom in Japan, participants of such major tournaments would undergo intensive pre-event training.
Often, the training would be overseen by official Blazers from the KOK Union, making it a valuable opportunity to grow stronger.
Normally, Hagun Academy's representatives would train at the Odawara training grounds. But due to recent puppetmaster attacks of unknown origin there, Shinomiya Kuroko reached out to Chimon Academy, arranging a joint training camp.
From Hagun's side, the six representatives were accompanied by student council members acting as coordinators and sparring partners. Kurogane Shizuku also joined, serving as a water-type Blazer for medical support.
The shocker: the one leading this training was none other than the "War God" Nangou Inotsugu. Everyone was both stunned and thrilled by his presence.
Nangou was more than qualified to train these young Blazers. But Charles had other plans—he took Stella deep into the mountainous areas beyond the training grounds.
The battle between Kurogane Ikki and Toudou Touka had stirred something in many people—Stella among them.
Stella understood clearly that both of them were stronger than she was. Against either one, she stood no chance of victory.
And ordinary training wouldn't help her much now. To achieve a massive leap in strength in such a short time, she needed to awaken her true power.
Thus, Charles and Stella began a special training regime.
Stella had never fully awakened her power partly because she had never truly understood its nature.
But there was another reason: her power was too strong. To protect herself, she had subconsciously sealed it away.
Charles had learned of her past—when Stella's power first awakened, her own flames burned her badly. People believed she wasn't fit to become a Blazer.
But she didn't give up. Through painful and persistent training, she learned to control her power. Thus was born the Crimson Princess.
But in that process, her true power had remained sealed. Though she now had the physical strength to handle it, the subconscious seal wasn't so easily broken.
And the only way to break it… was through immense pressure—perhaps even a life-or-death crisis—to trigger her survival instincts and force the release.
Faul, now restored to a size of over ten meters, unleashed searing breath at Stella.
Even the ground crystallized under the intense heat. This was the power of Salamander, the elemental spirit of fire from the world's primal origin.
Stella dodged the breath and leapt toward the airborne Faul.
But Faul's tail whipped through the air, smashing Stella and hurling her into a cliffside. The impact shattered the mountain wall.
Charles merely watched in silence. After all, he was the one who had sent Faul against her.
He asked Stella: Why are you so desperate to grow stronger?
Previously, she had said it was because she didn't want to disappoint the citizens who had placed their hopes in her.
But later, she gave a different answer.
The girl wanted to stand proudly beside the one she loved—not as someone needing protection, but as someone who could be his strength, someone irreplaceable.
Her resolve was so firm that Charles couldn't bring himself to reject her desire to grow stronger. So until she asked for it, he wouldn't command Faul to stop.
But would she give up so easily? Charles certainly didn't think so.
Ten days flew by. Every day, Stella trained until her stamina was completely drained, needing Charles to carry her back to the dorm.
The other representatives had no idea what kind of training the two of them were doing.
Kagami and her fellow academy journalists had once tried to investigate the valley where Charles and Stella trained—but they returned empty-handed.
According to Kagami, when the two were training, that valley became like hell itself—completely inaccessible.
And after they were done, all that could be seen was devastation, like the aftermath of a natural disaster.
Their training continued even after the ten-day joint training ended. Stella had indeed awakened her true power—but she couldn't yet control it.
So their training had to continue. The two decided to remain in the mountains a while longer.
Shinomiya Kuroko fully supported the idea. Since they were only borrowing the mountainous region, there would be no issues.
They had planned to keep training indefinitely—but an unexpected incident disrupted their plan.
The very day Kurogane Ikki and the others returned to Hagun Academy, something strange occurred.
That morning, while everyone had already boarded the bus, Charles suddenly sensed someone's presence in the lime powder storage shed used for marking the field.
He violently tore the lock off the warehouse door and found Kagami tied up inside.
As soon as he removed the cloth gag, Kagami blurted, "Charles! Hurry back to Hagun Academy—Alice is acting strange! They're planning to attack the academy!"
Charles's pupils contracted. He had long suspected there was something off about Arisuin Nagi—but the boy had never shown any malice toward the others.
He never expected things to break down here.
"Details can wait. I'm heading back to the academy right now! Stella, please take care of Kagami!"
Saying that, Charles stepped out of the warehouse, fiery wings spreading from his back as he soared into the sky.
"Alice… don't do anything foolish," Charles muttered, his body already breaking through the clouds above.
