Chapter 96: Chapter 96: Surprise (Bonus Chapter 2)
The red gate of the arena opened, and Toudou Touka stepped out, her Noble Art "Narukami" already manifested. As the announcer began to introduce the student council president, Charles was far less interested in the broadcast than he was in feeling out Touka's current state.
Touka had previously asked Kurogane Shizuku to persuade Ikki to forfeit the match. Though she couldn't refuse an officially arranged fight, she had no desire to face a sick Ikki on the battlefield.
She didn't want… to kill Kurogane Ikki.
That's right—this gentle, motherly student council president did not become Hagun Academy's strongest through kindness, nor did she place fourth in the Seven Star Sword Art Festival with mercy.
Violence is the essence of a Blazer. Touka had another side: cruel and fierce.
And typically, she wouldn't show that side unless she got serious.
Now, Charles could sense that seriousness from her. That focused intensity—it was clear she would not hold back. She might truly kill Ikki in this fight.
On the other side, the blue gate opened, and Kurogane Ikki entered the arena.
His steps were steady, and as he walked into the stadium, everyone sensed something unusual.
His appearance hadn't changed—his expression was as calm as ever. Yet, an overwhelming, terrifying aura surrounded him, unsettling the entire arena.
This was Ikki Kurogane's answer to a battle he might die in—an answer forged in resolve.
Nangou Inotsugu murmured, "I see… so this is Touka's opponent. Quite the impressive kid."
Charles agreed. "Yes. Ikki has resolved himself to die. That kind of resolve is devouring even the audience."
Nangou let out an admiring sigh. "Who would've thought the Kurogane family still had a man like this. This fight is going to be something."
Shinomiya Kuroko, however, frowned. "But Ikki's stamina has already hit rock bottom. At most, he can swing his sword once or twice. Resolve alone won't be enough."
Everyone knew—beating Toudou Touka came down to one thing: breaking through her technique, "Raikiri."
Indeed, the undefeated "Raikiri" could be countered.
Of course, not through brute-force suppression like Charles had once considered, nor through range advantage like Moroboshi Yudai used in last year's festival—those weren't options available to Ikki.
Ikki had long thought about what to do if he ever faced Touka.
Raikiri, after all, was essentially a battoujutsu—a sword draw technique. It was most dangerous before the blade left its sheath. After the draw, it couldn't be used again.
In a drawn-out fight, by repeatedly probing and luring Touka into using Raikiri or her other arts, he might create a fleeting opportunity. That moment was his one shot at victory.
But everyone in the stands knew that strategy—and they also knew Ikki didn't have the stamina to pull it off.
"Let's go ahead!"
The arena buzzer rang. The match had begun.
Ikki didn't choose a drawn-out battle as everyone expected. Instead, his body began to emit magical light.
It was "Itto Shura"—his ultimate technique, usable only once per day. This trump card was the sole reason people believed Ikki had a chance against Touka.
But no one expected him to play it from the very first second.
Itto Shura lasted only one minute. With that choice, Ikki left himself with no retreat.
Charles could feel it—Ikki wasn't using any strategy this time. That overwhelming aura was no bluff.
No one had ever defeated Toudou Touka at close range. The moment you entered her range, you were in her domain.
But Ikki was going to break through that domain—head-on.
"Seventh Secret Sword—Thunder Flash!"
Ikki unleashed his fastest slash, a blade too quick for the naked eye to follow—like lightning streaking across the sky in an instant.
This was Ikki's first and final strike of the match. He would end this fight with a single, uncompromising blow.
But his opponent was Touka—the one known as "Raikiri," the blade that cuts lightning.
Touka, knowing full well that Ikki had reached his limit, could have dodged the strike and let him wear himself out.
But she too sensed Ikki's resolve. Against an opponent like this, she could never choose to retreat.
He had stepped into her domain. It was a proper, formal challenge. Naturally, she would answer it with her strongest move.
She spread her legs, channeled electricity into her sheath, and prepared to draw with "Raikiri."
"Raikiri!"
Putting their honor and burdens on the line, the two met in a true, fair clash.
Everyone watching could already see the result as the attacks were unleashed.
Both techniques were lightning-fast, but Touka's Raikiri had a slight edge in speed. She would cut Ikki down—there was no doubt.
Ikki knew it too. But he didn't believe he would lose.
Itto Shura released all his power over a minute. But he didn't need a full minute.
One second was enough.
Sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell—all unnecessary. Even breathing and a heartbeat were irrelevant in that one second.
He poured all his stamina, magic, and the power of every cell in his body into that single second.
This was the power of Ikki's breakthrough—compressing the one-minute burst of Itto Shura into one second.
Its name: "Itto Rasetsu."
"Eight Secret Sword—Void Blade!"
Charles shot to his feet, as if he'd just witnessed the impossible.
Ikki's slash split through Touka's plasma blade—and then shattered her Narukami in the same stroke.
Everyone knew that Noble Arts were manifestations of the soul. A physicalized magic weapon should be unbreakable.
Ikki's own "Intetsu," for example, could withstand tons of pressure without any deformation.
How could he possibly have the power to cut through Touka's Narukami?
But the proof lay before them. With her Noble Art destroyed, Touka lost consciousness and collapsed.
Charles clutched the railing, eyes wide with emotion. He hadn't expected Ikki to deliver such a shocking performance.
Itto Rasetsu was dazzlingly powerful, but what truly moved Charles was the special technique Ikki had incorporated into that final slash.
Charles could feel it. In that last strike, Ikki's energy flow had changed.
Through manipulating his "ki," he had released a razor-sharp blow charged with compressed magic.
No wonder he'd shattered Touka's Noble Art—this move carried a lethal aura that even Charles found dangerous.
And to think—Charles was the one who had taught Ikki how to control his ki. Yet Ikki had taken that and crafted a technique beyond even Charles's expectations.
Sure, Charles had taught ki techniques to the monks at Shinryuuji, but none of them had developed anything like this.
It made sense though. While those monks were already occupied honing their martial arts and innate abilities, Ikki—limited by his natural talent—grasped at every chance to grow stronger.
Only someone like him could discover a technique even Charles hadn't envisioned.
"…Did he create that just for me?" Charles whispered, then broke into a smile.
"He really didn't let me down."
What Charles didn't know was that, in the Black Clover arc he missed before reincarnating, there was a similar ability. It was used by the spellcasters from Yami's homeland, the Land of the Sun, and was known as "Zetten."
