Chapter 623: Too Many Questions, Gerald's Brief Interlude
--
There are humans out there...
No, they weren't simply existing. They're thriving...if the words of the void's main consciousness were to be believed, which Cedric definitely does.
What a bomb to casually drop on him, really.
To think that, out there, humans were one of the most respected, prosperous, and largest tribes sounds absurd. Add the fact that the location of this prison turns out to be close to a humann, which filled him with a strange sense of anticipation and wariness.
Odin himself, the creator of the void and this prison, was human too. Who could've thought?
If Odin couldn't create humans, then how come they're here? What did he do? Did he abduct some in that nearby civilization and throw them in here? But that wouldn't make sense! Because, according to what the void slave said, the Primordial Chaos here has gone through cycles of death and rebirth. It also said that it's been so long since the last time Odin came here or contacted this place, so much so that the void slave was pretty confident that he had completely forgotten about this place, so how can that be?
Is it because of some sort of magical technique? Did they preserve a template for human genes to use whenever another cycle ends and begins? How exactly does the Primordial Chaos keep giving birth to humans?
As for the human civilization outside, are they truly the same as humans here? They shouldn't be, right? There should be some differences, after all; unlike them, they're not being raised inside prison for the sole purpose of helping someone understand the higher and deeper form of concept laws.
What are they like? Do they behave the same? Are they seekers of progress too? The void slave said that they're prosperous, but how prosperous exactly are we talking about?
Cedric has way too many questions to ask. There's so much he wanted to know, and it's making him agitated. But although he knew that he could satisfy his curiosity by simply asking the void slave about it, he refrained from doing so...for now, at least.
Instead, he allowed himself to sit in the simple fact that there were humans out there too. Why he had chosen to do this was a mystery to him as well, yet he did it anyway.
Deep down, he truly wanted to know everything. But somehow, it also feels like now isn't the proper time for him to know.
Everything was dropped onto him unceremoniously. In truth, he's still reeling about the fact that his entire world turned out to be a massive prison after all...that his and everyone else's entire existence wasn't natural; it was man-made with the purpose of helping their creator to understand concept laws.
And now, the existence of humans out there weighs heavily on his mind too.
Honestly, he feels like the whole world was just messing with him. And that's not exactly wrong now, is it?
All of this takes him back to the time when he discovered the existence of the alliance.
Back then, he too was equally terrified and excited, and it took him a while to adjust to that reality. This time is no different. He just never thought he'd experience it again...
**
"Well, hello there, handsome. What can I get you?"
Gerald rolled his eyes in exasperation as he sat down on a stool. Seeing his reaction, the person who greeted him just grinned, not minding Gerald's cold behavior.
"Here's your cut." Gerald handed over a spatial ring to the other person. "It's from the last mission you helped me with. Take it."
"My, aren't you so sweet? Coming all the way here in person just to send me this." The lady charmingly and seductively cooed at him.
She stretched out an arm to receive the ring. Her touch lingered just a tad bit longer than necessary, causing a pleasant sensation to run through Gerald's nerves.
"If I hadn't known any better, I'd think that this is your way of courting me." She giggled pleasantly at his face. "We all know that you'd prefer to be literally anywhere else instead of coming here, yet you still made your way over to me just to give me this when you could've just hired a delivery guy to do it for you."
She raised a hand to caress his face, and surprisingly, Gerald didn't shy away from her touch, nor did he look displeased or disgusted. If he ever was, it certainly wasn't aimed at her; it's aimed at this place.
She's right. Gerald would prefer to be anywhere else except here. Why? Because this was a waste planet. Literally.
It's a filthy and dying world where the trash and waste of civilizations are sent to be processed or recycled. The air here was putrid, sour, and very foul. There's not even a single square of this place that could be considered clean. And for Gerald, this was certainly a nightmare. He'd prefer to trek on mountains or corpses and seas of blood instead of coming here. But at the very least, though, this place owned by her wasn't so bad.
He could freeze a world filled with dead bodies and seas of blood, turn them into powdered ice, and clean all of the filth at once. But he couldn't do the same here because that would be illegal, and it would also alert his father, which he obviously didn't want to happen.
Waste processing plants are what they're called. It's a legitimate process and method of the alliance to deal with waste and trash safely. Any act of intentional harm to this place will be seen as provocation to the entire alliance. So, no matter how disgusted he was at this planet, he couldn't do a damn thing about it.
"Don't push your luck," Gerald flatly responded.
"Oh, I'm not pushing anything at all." She chuckled and patted his face before turning her attention back to her work.
Gerald looked over as well. While he couldn't completely understand what she's doing, he could tell that it's important.
"When will you be done with this place, Nina?" he asked, unable to help a little bit of impatience from slipping out.
"And...there, done!" Nina put down her pen and stretched out.
Gerald stared. His eyes traced her lines, her figure, her size...his gaze left a burning trail on her tanned skin dotted with silver specks. He stared at the way her shirt lifted as she stretched her arms, revealing her toned and flat stomach. He stared at her chest and lingered at her back and posterior.
He felt his throat dry. He knows that he stared just a little too long and she noticed it. Sometimes, having good eyesight wasn't all that advantageous.
Nina just smiled and didn't call him out on it. This wasn't the first time anyway, and he's the only one allowed to ever see her this way.
"Go back to your ship; wait for me there. I just need to clean up here; I'll be with you shortly."
Gerald just nodded and promptly disappeared from where he was. He left in such a hurry that one might think he's running away from embarrassment and the potential awkwardness.
Nina just laughed and rounded up her stuff here.
Her work on this planet is done. Truthfully, she didn't want to be here either. Nobody does. But this project pays a little too well for her to ignore. And considering that she only spent two months to finish this project, she'd say that everything was worth it.
As for Gerald, well...he's special.
Despite not liking this place at all, he didn't stop her from pursuing her interests. They both knew that he's rich enough, but Nina doesn't want to rely on him for everything.
She didn't start dating him to gain access to his riches, after all. Hell, she never knew he was that rich until he offered to buy the company she was working for just to hand it over to her as a casual gift.
True to her word, she cleaned up this place and made sure that she didn't leave anything important. After that, she sent a notification to the system AI here, concluding her stay at this planet and asking for a clean exit, which was easily granted to her.
Then, she flew to Gerald's ship stationed just outside the planet's atmosphere, away from the stench and filth of that place.
The doors recognized her even before she approached, granting her entry.
She made her way to her room—yes, she has a room here—shrugged off her clothes, and threw them in the laundry. Before she could even step into the showers, she already felt his gaze upon her, sending shivers down her spine, yet she acted as if she never noticed it.
Nina allowed the warm water to cascade down her face and body, washing away any trace of filth or stench that lingered while she stayed at the place.
"Mmm..." She couldn't help but release a pleased hum, feeling a strong and muscular arm wrapping her waist from behind.
She then felt his lips impatiently pecking at her neck. A giggle escaped from her lips before she turned around and gave him exactly what he wanted.
The atmosphere in the bathroom quickly turned heated...
