Dragon Soul System

Chapter 2: Chapter 001 The Truth

Earth, New York City, New York, 2052 A.D.

Samuel "Shay" Anderson was an adventurer like all the lucky few. Tall, with pitch-black hair, big blue eyes, and stylishly handsome good looks, the man walked towards the spiralling green crevasse with a backpack slung over his shoulder. His tight-fitting shirt displayed his slender build. However, it was mostly covered up by his Big Black Hoodie.

His ripped-up stretchy slim-fit blue jeans and roughed-up sneakers betrayed the trouble his job provided. The portals belonged to no man- until they were conquered, in full.

Several years ago in the year 2048, monsters came upon the earth and decided to annhilate as much as they could in complete totality.

But how did they arrive? Easy. Portals. You know, the crazy spinning colorful vortexes in comics and other genres of fiction that work as doors to other dimensions and travel through time and/or space….

Except these portals were governed by a "System." Each portal was locked in time and space for a preset length before they exploded with monsters. Both the preset length and the monsters inside had increasing difficulty depending on the color of the portal itself.

Over time, the portal colors were given ranks. Gray was F-Rank, Green was E-Rank, Blue was D-Rank, Yellow was C-Rank, Orange was B-Rank, Red was A-Rank, and Indigo was S-Rank. Furthermore, there were five more portals that hadn't broken yet. They were Purple, Black, White, Gold, and Rainbow…

Furthermore, if humans went inside the portals and defeated the monsters, they became a part of the system.

As new 'Adventurers,' they were given a unique skill tree that would help them fight against the enemy monsters. They held that in their hearts as a way forward for humanity. As they fought and defeated the monsters, they would receive various items and level up their skill tree.

Unfortunately for the new adventurers, the awakening also came with a ranking. Each skill tree was ranked, starting at F. Unfortunately for golden standard of humanity, the ranks never changed. S-Ranks could control governments, while F-Ranks actually fighting was the bane of every dungeon-goer.

Right before Shay walked through the aetherial portal, his communicator rang.

"Brother, I was hungry so I had the last bowl of oatmeal. Could you grab some on your way home?"

Shay smiled. His younger sister, Lia, in his care, brought a shine to his life that pushed him through the next day. Every day.

He took a minute to send her a quick reply. "Sure, Sweet Sister O' Mine. I'm entering the dungeon now but I can stop by O'Malley's afterwards."

After making his promise, he walked through the emerald swirls.

He heard a loud voice before his vision cleared. "What took you so long to step through the portal? Are you trying to pull one over on us?"

Shay coughed gently. "No sir, the bagger commission had an update regarding a quest. They wanted to confirm that I was on shift. They sent the confirmation notice late, so I didn't receive it until after you walked in."

As his vision cleared and his temporal-spatial awareness came back, he began to notice his party members.

Lila Green, the healer, had a bright pinkish-red ponytail and a slimmer build. Shay had worked with her before. She held a kind heart.

Emilio Jorvanni was wearing all black and wielded two daggers. 'An assassin.'

Harry Montoni, better known as 'Crash,' was popular with mist of the local ladies. His dark red hair and obnoxious, brazen attitude tended to be seen as "flirting." However, he tended to piss off everyone else to the point of no return.

He carried a small staff about 1-meter in length with a small red crystal affixed to the top. He used it to cast his mage spells- which were all explosion type.

As a D-Rank Adventurer, they didn't deal that much damage in the grand scale of things. However, in a D-Rank dungeon such as this they did plenty enough damage to rile the entire town.

And yes, before Shay lie a town. An empty town, a ghost town. But a town nonetheless.

Alongside them were several under-dressed and underfunded E-rank adventurers.

Of course, the blonde man in gold and white with shoulder length hair and a serious smirk was none other than Goro Patroni, the rich bastard funding the expedition. As a paladin-type, his skill tree allowed him to take heavy damage. He was also the one talking.

"Alright, but no funny business. Let us do the fighting and you collect the cores. To the boss!"

"To the boss!"

As the adventurers began to march forward, Goto leaned over to whisper in Shay's ear. "Be careful, little F-rank bastard. I won't see you slacking. And I don't mind playing with those who steal- and those who don't."

He breathed an extra second of cold, hard reality into Shay's ear before slapping him with his coatstrings on his way forward. "F-Rank Trash." He muttered.

The truth was told. Shay was an F-Rank. His Unique Skill was "Untouched Unique Soul." It sounded good, but in reality…

As his soul was unique, the system couldn't bind to it properly. This meant he couldn't add any skills, had no skill tree, couldn't get items or skills for defeating monsters…

The tragic truth was… He was the least skilled of all of the adventurers… Ever.
