Douluo Dalu 3: Purple-Gold Dragon God

Chapter 109: Chapter 109: The Sacred Illusion Demon Ape

After that, Gu You had no idea how much divine power he'd poured into the black hole, but the result was always the same — nothing ever came back out.

'Damn it!'

In a fit of frustration, Gu You had furiously compressed the thing, turning it into a gem and making it into a necklace. This time, it happened to come to mind as a gift for Gu Yue. Besides, this thing was practically useless to him now — not to mention, there was a quasi-god sealed inside it. Thinking it over, keeping the necklace might be more of a liability. After all, who could guarantee that Yuezi wouldn't suddenly break free and strike him down when he least expected it? Giving it to Gu Yue removed that risk. If anything happened in the future, well, it would be her problem — and it also earned him some goodwill. Why not?

"Thank you." Gu Yue was slightly taken aback but accepted it.

"And mine! Where's mine? Last time you said you owed me, remember?" Xu Xiaoyan hopped up eagerly. She was still about two heads shorter than Gu You, looking even more adorable now with her lively, childlike smile.

"Uh… of course." Gu You scratched his head awkwardly. With a flick of his right hand, a beautiful spirit-forged ice crystal appeared before everyone. It was oval-shaped, larger than his palm, shimmering with delicate blue light, with golden threads flowing within. Gu You certainly didn't have two black holes, so this was just something to appease her — after all, it was still a pretty stone, and the ice crystal was nothing to scoff at. It would do the trick…

"Wow! What a beautiful stone!" Xu Xiaoyan gasped in delight, her eyes sparkling as she gazed at the crystal.

Seeing this, Gu You let out a long breath. 'Phew, Xiaoyan really is easy to please.'

"Alright, enough chatting! Ahem! Your exam consists of multiple sections. Each section is scored out of ten, with six considered passing. At the end, all your scores will be combined for a total. Any section you fail will bring penalties, while full marks will grant bonuses." Shen Yi cut in sharply, her gaze turning serious.

"Whatever. With me here, we'll definitely pass." Gu You stretched lazily and yawned.

"You… you! Ramp up the difficulty!" Shen Yi was fuming at Gu You's nonchalant attitude.

"Follow me!"

Xie Xie gave Gu You a thumbs-up behind Shen Yi's back. Only Gu You dared to talk to a Shrek Academy teacher like that.

They passed through a metallic corridor and entered another large hall. Shen Yi stopped, turning back with a cold smirk. "Wait here. The next section is about to begin."

She didn't tell them what the second test would be. Letting Gu You participate at all was already a huge exception, so the difficulty was definitely going to be cranked up. Unlike regular students who lined up for tests, they had to rely entirely on their own strength to push through.

Suddenly, the lights in the hall dimmed, as if night had fallen.

On the floor, strange silver lines lit up, weaving together into a dazzling pattern. Above them, the ceiling mural — a painted night sky — seemed to come alive, stretching into an endless expanse.

Gu You's eyes sharpened immediately. He sensed a flicker of danger. With his current strength, he shouldn't be feeling this — which meant this test's difficulty wasn't just slightly increased, it was probably ramped up several times over.

Gu Yue raised her eyebrows, and Tang Wulin's group instinctively released their martial spirits, not daring to slack off.

The silver patterns on the floor silently faded into the darkness. In that moment, it felt like they were floating in the night sky, entering a strange, surreal world.

A sudden sense of powerlessness hit them, and the world seemed to spin. Their surroundings shifted violently.

When the light returned, Gu You was startled to find that although the night sky remained, they were now standing in a massive circular arena.

All around them, deafening cheers echoed.

Not far ahead, a terrifying aura surged toward them.

Gu You clenched his fists. Tang Wulin and the others exchanged small nods, already feeling suffocated by the sheer pressure.

When they focused their gaze, they saw it clearly — it was a soul beast. This beast looked bizarre, monkey-like, with strange orange eyes. It stood over ten meters tall, its body length two meters.

"The Sacred Illusion Demon Ape!" Xie Xie exclaimed in shock. "It's got twenty thousand years of cultivation — are they seriously making us fight this?!"

The Sacred Illusion Demon Ape was a top-tier spiritual-type soul beast. Legends said there was only ever one per forest, and any soul beast that posed a threat to it would be slain through its terrifying ultimate spiritual illusions. It was ruthless, and it had been extinct for millennia. How Shrek Academy managed to recreate its image was anyone's guess. According to old records, the last known Sacred Illusion Demon Ape had been killed two thousand years ago by the Rakshasa God, Bibi Dong.

Gu You stepped in front of the others, cursing Shen Yi inwardly. 'Turning up the difficulty this much? What, does she think I can't handle it? Competing with me in spiritual power? That's like an ant staring up at a divine dragon!'

The Sacred Illusion Demon Ape let out an ear-piercing shriek, its eyes glowing with purple light. Terrifying waves of spiritual pressure surged outward. Gu Yue felt dizzy, and Tang Wulin was already starting to experience hallucinations.

But just as the pressure reached its peak, the ape suddenly let out a pained screech — and collapsed, crashing heavily to the ground.

"What… just happened?"

Tang Wulin stood frozen, staring blankly. He turned to look at Gu You, only to see his eyes glowing with an unfamiliar, profound light — similar to the Purple Demon Eye, yet not quite the same.

That's right. Gu You had just one-shot a peak spiritual-type soul beast.

Everything plunged back into darkness. The starry sky twisted and rotated, but the dizziness only lasted a moment. As their vision cleared, they were back where they'd started.

Shen Yi reappeared, her expression now twisted with an odd mix of emotions.

"Full marks. All of you." Shen Yi had nothing more to say. At this point, what was the point of even testing? If they couldn't even defeat a twenty-thousand-year soul beast, what use were the later tests? And as for Gu You… he was simply no longer operating on the scale of an ordinary human soul master.

They continued following Shen Yi until they arrived at an open space between stone buildings. At last, the third test was fully revealed before them.

Rows upon rows of massive gates stretched out in front of them — at least a hundred, with varying numbers in each row.

More accurately, these should be called guillotine gates. Each gate was a towering frame, and hanging at the top was a colossal guillotine blade, over two meters wide, more than a meter tall, and half a meter thick. The sheer size of these blades meant that even an elephant standing underneath would be sliced clean in two — and with so many of them, any living creature caught among them would surely be minced to pulp.

"The third test! Reaction and adaptability. When I give the signal, you'll have one minute to…"
