Chapter 171: Chapter 169: A Haul of Spoils
After a full night of rest, Huo Yuhao finally woke up feeling fully recharged, his soul power restored to peak condition.
The first thing he saw upon opening his eyes was Meng Hongchen, staring intently at him from up close.
Feeling the softness beneath the back of his head—Meng Hongchen's thighs—Huo Yuhao, still groggy, was startled. He instinctively tried to sit up, but Meng Hongchen giggled and gently pressed him back down with her hand.
"Hehe... Yuhao, why so eager to get up? Is resting on my thighs really that uncomfortable?"
Feeling slightly flustered, Huo Yuhao's cheeks turned red. He gave up resisting and relaxed into her lap.
"Senior sister... were you letting me sleep like this the whole time?"
"Yup. Don't worry, I'm not tired. Think of it as staying up late to cultivate. I didn't really do much anyway—you were the one out there wiping out all those sea soul beasts."
"Mm..."
Huo Yuhao nodded and avoided her gaze, pretending to still be drowsy as he closed his eyes again. Meng Hongchen watched his face thoughtfully and said,
"Perfect. Since you're already taking advantage of me, this young lady will give you some loving wake-up care."
With a flick of her left hand, a towel on the nearby table floated up, glided into the water basin, soaked itself, wrung itself out, and landed in her hand—all under her control through soul power.
Meng Hongchen looked at the towel and giggled.
"Oh? Isn't this my towel? Guess I grabbed the wrong one. Oh well—guess I'll just use it to clean you up anyway."
As the towel gently wiped across his face and neck, Huo Yuhao could sense something was off in her tone. 'This doesn't sound like an accident at all...'
Meng Hongchen cleaned his face carefully, wiped away the sweat on his neck, and even helped him brush his teeth. The whole routine took nearly half an hour. By the time they were done, the soft glow of morning had become the bright light of day.
Finally, with some reluctance, they packed everything up and got out of bed, ready to check out what was happening on deck.
But the moment they stepped outside, Huo Yuhao and Meng Hongchen were stunned.
"What... what is all this?"
The deck was piled with mountains of spoils, stacked seven or eight meters high. Anyone could see that these came from the countless sea soul beasts slain during the battle—rare and valuable materials from their bodies. Most were high-quality, nourishing meats, but there were also vast quantities of whale glue, fish cores, and even soul bones.
The sheer value of this trove was unimaginable—especially the soul bones. The quantity alone was staggering.
This was one of the main reasons why soul engineers would abandon the comfort of life on land to brave the perils of the sea. Patriotism alone wasn't enough to explain it—the real incentive was the opportunity to claim a share of such precious loot after a successful hunt. Half of all recovered materials would be turned over to the Empire, but the remaining fifty percent belonged entirely to the crew of the Sunlight, to divide as they pleased.
Especially the soul bones—just one could trigger bloodshed and chaos if brought to the mainland. Wars might even be waged over them.
Huo Yuhao stared at the massive pile of spoils, swallowing hard. He didn't care much about the whale glue or fish cores—those were plentiful and easy to purchase with Mingde Hall's resources. But the soul bones... those were priceless, beyond any market value.
The entire deck area holding the loot was now sealed off and heavily guarded to prevent theft. Shi Dongsheng stood nearby, watching over the haul. When he saw Huo Yuhao and Meng Hongchen walk out, he smiled and strode over.
"Morning, heroes! How was your rest?"
Huo Yuhao quickly wiped the greedy look off his face and cleared his throat.
"Soul power's almost fully recovered, Captain Shi."
Of course, Shi Dongsheng had caught that hungry look Huo Yuhao cast toward the pile. He laughed heartily and said,
"Haha, no worries, little Huo. You're one of our greatest heroes aboard the Sunlight. You could say you saved us all. Go ahead—take whatever you want from this pile. As much as you like. Right, men?"
Turning to the deck, Shi Dongsheng shouted at the soldiers. They immediately responded in unison.
"No objections!"
Of course they didn't. If Huo Yuhao hadn't sealed the northern breach and wiped out all those sea soul beasts, they would've been forced into brutal, close-quarters combat with terrifying ten-thousand-year beasts. The casualties would have been unimaginable.
Seeing their enthusiastic support, Huo Yuhao didn't turn them down. He gave a modest smile and changed the subject.
"Thank you, Captain Shi, and thank you all. I'm not greedy. I won't take too much—everyone deserves their share too. Oh, right. Captain Shi, is there any sea soul beast suitable for Meng Hongchen's sixth soul ring? Preferably one in the fifty- to sixty-thousand-year range?"
At this, Shi Dongsheng paused for a moment before replying firmly.
"There is one. It's an ice-type sea soul beast. Still alive—being kept under tight guard just outside the Sunlight. When we found it, I ordered the soldiers to capture it instead of killing it. The only issue is... its cultivation is a bit high."
Huo Yuhao didn't show any worry at the words 'a bit high.' He was full of confidence.
"Oh? Captain Shi, how high are we talking?"
"About twenty thousand years too high. It's an eighty-thousand-year-old ice-type sea soul beast. Honestly, I think that's... a little too much for a sixth ring."
Shi Dongsheng sighed, disappointed. It was a shame—he had hoped to find the granddaughter of Hall Master Hongchen a perfect sixth ring, and this beast's bloodline was of excellent quality.
But Huo Yuhao didn't sigh. He knew well that while Meng Hongchen might not be able to absorb a ring of that level through conventional means... he had other ways.
"Captain Shi, why don't you take us to see it first?"
"Alright."
With that, Shi Dongsheng led them off the Sunlight, heading into the waters surrounding the ship.
