Chapter 170: Chapter 168: Snow Empress' Little Fangirl, Meng Hongchen
While Huo Yuhao was still fast asleep, Meng Hongchen sat by his side, blushing slightly as she gazed dreamily at his face. She gently poked him here and there, completely absorbed in watching him.
Meanwhile, the third wave of the sea soul beast assault had already reached the Sunlight's front line.
In truth, the moment the linked defensive soul barrier had been fully restored, the failure of the sea soul beasts' third wave had been sealed. The attacks of even ten-thousand-year sea soul beasts became meaningless before the immense power of the defensive barrier. Unfortunately for them, they were already too deep in the operation to retreat.
Some of the more intelligent sea soul beasts sensed something was wrong, but far behind them, the terrifying being directing the assault was still broadcasting signals to charge—signals that rang out like a death knell. These beasts didn't dare disobey the orders of that savage lord.
Though they could feel danger looming, none of them truly understood just how hellish the reception ahead would be.
At this moment on the Sunlight, all combat-ready soldiers had gathered around the linked soul tools, awaiting Captain Shi Dongsheng's command. They were preparing to unleash a devastating attack—one with terrifying destructive force and an immense area of effect. It would nearly drain the soul power of most of the soldiers aboard, but it would be worth it.
Inside the command room, Shi Dongsheng stared unblinking at the red dots rapidly approaching on the screen. He wanted to end this battle in one decisive blow—force the sea soul beasts to retreat and bring this expedition to a close.
When all the targets finally entered the attack range, Shi Dongsheng gave a firm, unwavering order.
"Activate final attack system!"
At his command, every soldier poured their remaining soul power into the linked soul tools. As the energy rapidly charged in, the defensive barrier began to glow with a deep, ominous red.
When that red reached its peak saturation, the barrier suddenly exploded outward without warning.
A crimson shockwave burst from the shattered soul shield. Every sea soul beast caught in its path either exploded on the spot, fainted into unconsciousness, or silently bled to death in the ocean.
The wave spread with incredible speed. In just seconds, every sea soul beast from the third wave was wiped out. Even the powerful ten-thousand-year beasts either died or were left barely alive.
Now, it wasn't just the water near the Sunlight that was dyed red—the entire sea, for several kilometers in every direction, had turned into a crimson expanse of death.
This was the Sunlight's ultimate attack system—Self-Destructive Pulse Shock. By detonating a soul-energy-filled barrier, it released an enormous pulse wave outward in a five-kilometer radius, dealing devastating, invisible damage to sea soul beasts. And with the ocean's excellent energy conductivity, this form of attack was especially effective underwater.
Of course, the cost was steep. The barrier would take at least an hour to recover, and most of the ship's soldiers were now completely drained of soul power. But the tradeoff was worth it. The heavy losses would force even the ten-thousand-year sea soul beast commanders to reconsider continuing their assault.
Far away, the savage beast commanding the attack could sense his forces' defeat. Furious, he hesitated. He had finally found a chance to teach those wretched humans a lesson, only to suffer utter failure. He felt humiliated. If he didn't retaliate, it would be a disgrace he'd never forget.
Just as he was preparing to launch a long-range strike against the Sunlight, a terrifying aura suddenly descended on him—a force so powerful it made him tremble with fear. This was a being far beyond his strength.
Panic-stricken, the savage beast fled without hesitation.
Shi Dongsheng hadn't sensed the presence of the Snow Empress, who had deliberately released that threatening aura. But he did sense the rapid retreat of the beast's powerful aura. He let out a long breath. Though he had prepared a contingency for a counterattack from a furious ten-thousand-year sea soul beast, he hadn't expected Huo Yuhao to have someone like the Snow Empress silently watching their backs.
"Begin battlefield cleanup."
After issuing his final order, Shi Dongsheng left the bridge with a team of still-capable soldiers to begin salvaging and cleaning the battlefield. As the saying went—no one wakes early without profit. Slaying sea soul beasts yielded valuable spoils, which was one of the reasons the Sunlight could undertake such frequent expeditions. This part of the mission was often the most rewarding and joyful.
"Hmph. Ran off with his tail between his legs."
Back in the quarters shared by Huo Yuhao and Meng Hongchen, the Snow Empress scoffed coldly after sensing the fleeing aura of the sea soul beast commander.
Meng Hongchen looked up at her with admiration, gently running her hand through Huo Yuhao's hair as he rested on her lap.
"Snow Empress, you're amazing. You didn't even do anything, and that guy still—"
Snow Empress glanced at her. The icy sharpness in her gaze softened. For reasons she couldn't explain, though she usually disliked humans, she felt an unexpected fondness for this girl so close to Huo Yuhao. Maybe it was because of Yuhao... or maybe because of the Northern bloodline in Meng Hongchen's martial soul.
In truth, not long ago, Huo Yuhao had cautiously revealed some of his secrets to Meng Hongchen—one of them being the existence of the Snow Empress.
And telling her wasn't really a big deal. Even Jing Hongchen likely suspected there was some deep connection between Huo Yuhao and the Snow Empress.
After learning that Huo Yuhao had a seventy-thousand-year ancient beast—one of the top three rulers of the Extreme North and ranked third among the Ten Great Savage Beasts—sealed within him, Meng Hongchen had been thoroughly shocked.
But over time, as she studied ice-control techniques under the Snow Empress, she had gradually become her little fangirl.
"That was just a Crimson Rock King, barely past two hundred thousand years old. Knows a few tricks from a distance, but in front of me, it's nothing more than a giant octopus. Watch over Yuhao properly. I'm going to rest."
The Snow Empress gave Meng Hongchen a rare smile and nodded before vanishing from the room, returning to Huo Yuhao's spiritual world.
Meng Hongchen looked dazed for a moment. She recalled the Empress' proud, commanding figure and couldn't help but think, 'She's seriously so cool...'
"Snow Empress... hehe."
She couldn't help liking her. Not just because of her strength and presence, but because without the Snow Empress, she might never have survived the terrifying backlash of her cold poison. The solution to that crisis had also come from the Empress' guidance.
