Chapter 160: Chapter 158: A Promise Beneath the Sea of Stars
Meng Hongchen wore a sleek, black one-piece swimsuit that perfectly complemented her draped white hair. Her snow-white legs and alluring collarbone were fully revealed. Though her figure wasn't overly voluptuous, it was still enough to make one's blood run hot. Her delicate body glowed a charming shade of pink under the setting sun. Huo Yuhao stared at her, utterly captivated, and murmured softly,
"You're beautiful, Senior."
Seeing his dazed expression, Meng Hongchen giggled happily, then turned playfully and ran toward the sea, shouting,
"Come play, Yuhao~!"
That finally snapped Huo Yuhao out of his trance. Watching her excitedly dash toward the ocean, he chuckled and quickly changed into his own swimsuit. His well-toned body, the result of constant training, was fully on display as he followed behind her at a relaxed pace.
"Getting closer and closer."
On a vast stretch of green plains, a green figure blended almost perfectly with the landscape.
Rui Beast strolled leisurely across the field, occasionally bending down to toy with blooming wildflowers. She had grown increasingly fond of all living things—likely influenced by the Goddess of Life. Soon, she would finally arrive at the place where that person was. The human chosen by her goddess sister… what kind of person would he be?
Picking a pretty blue tulip and tucking it behind her ear, Rui Beast stood upright and murmured with anticipation,
"Getting closer and closer. I should probably sense where he is now, right?"
She activated her life force. Only through channeling her life energy could she sense the location of the Life Envoy. But the moment she did, she froze.
"Huh? Wasn't he to the east? Why is he suddenly in the south?"
Looking eastward at the sun and then southward at the distant hills, Rui Beast blinked, puzzled. A gentle breeze swept over her small frame, leaving her standing alone on the vast plains like a single blade of green grass. She had been heading east all this time, steadily closing the distance between them. And now? That guy had randomly darted off to the south, undoing all her progress.
"Ugh…"
She pouted in frustration and clenched her fists. She knew it wasn't his fault—he didn't know she was coming. But still, the fact that he suddenly ran so far away ignited a strange little flame in her chest.
I came all the way from the Great Star Dou Forest… and you're playing hard to get?
"You brought this on yourself. Let's see what you're doing running off that far."
Clenching her teeth, Rui Beast muttered as a shimmering golden aura ignited around her. The golden dragon lance materialized in her hand, and her eyes gleamed with regal golden light. Her Golden Dragon bloodline surged to the surface. At this moment, her power was frightening.
With the golden lance in hand, she turned to face the south. Six green-gold soul rings rose beneath her feet as she raised the lance high. Then, with blinding speed, she hurled it southward. The lance tore through the sound barrier with a booming explosion.
Her second soul ring lit up with a brilliant green light, and her body transformed into a green blur, trailing just behind the supersonic golden lance.
By using the lance's life-absorbing trait in tandem with her Life Traverse soul skill, she was able to follow directly behind it. With the strength granted by her Golden Dragon King bloodline, the strain of supersonic flight didn't faze her in the slightest. The lance could stay airborne for at least five minutes when thrown with her full force.
"Here I come!"
Had anyone been watching, they would have witnessed a surreal sight: two streaks of golden and green light racing across the sky toward the south—one of them even shouting.
Swimming, diving—after playing at the golden, sun-kissed beach beneath the setting sun for quite a while, night had finally fallen. Meng Hongchen sat down on the sand to rest, her gaze full of longing—not hunger, for once—as she watched Huo Yuhao grill fish by the shoreline.
Grilling fish was second nature to Huo Yuhao. Before long, he was walking toward her, holding a freshly roasted sea fish in each hand. As he handed one over, Meng Hongchen's eyes sparkled with anticipation.
She eagerly accepted the stick-skewered fish and took a big bite. The crispy skin and tender, juicy flesh were still steaming, but even as the heat made her whimper with every bite, she didn't stop eating.
Huo Yuhao looked at her helplessly, his tone full of affection.
"Senior, can't you eat a little slower?"
"Mmm-mmm! Sho good!" she mumbled through a mouthful of piping hot fish.
Huo Yuhao just smiled, gently rubbing her head before starting on his own grilled fish. Sea fish were large, but for two soul masters in the middle of their growth spurts—and after a long journey—they didn't last long. In no time, the fish were reduced to bare bones and empty sticks.
After finishing their meal and sipping some orange juice they'd brought along, the two of them lay comfortably on the sand, which still retained the warmth of the day's sun. Above them stretched a breathtaking sea of stars.
"The stars are so bright out here. You can't see anything like this in Mingdu."
Huo Yuhao nodded in agreement. Mingdu was brightly lit even at night. The light pollution was so bad you could barely see any stars. But Sunrise City, being more traditional, had far fewer soul lamps, allowing them to see the sky in all its pristine beauty.
"You know any of the stars, Yuhao?"
"Not really."
He sighed. Back on Earth, he had known the constellations. But in this otherworldly place—this unfamiliar universe—he hadn't studied them. How could he?
Unlike Earth's sweeping Milky Way, the stars here glimmered in multicolored clusters, with several vivid, multihued nebulas glowing quietly in the distance.
"Hehe, then let your senior give you a lesson. Finally found something you don't know!"
"Sounds good."
And so, Meng Hongchen began naming the stars one by one, pointing them out with childlike excitement. It was clear she was someone who loved watching the stars. She knew them all like old friends.
But eventually, there were just too many, and she couldn't name them all. She sighed in defeat and declared class dismissed, falling silent.
They lay together for a while, quietly enjoying the peaceful beauty of the starlit sky. Then, suddenly, Meng Hongchen reached out and held Huo Yuhao's hand.
"Yuhao, let's keep watching the stars together like this, forever. Okay?"
Huo Yuhao was stunned for a moment, then smiled gently.
"Of course. We'll always be together. Even if the stars above us someday burn out, we'll still be side by side."
