Chapter 30: Chapter 30: The Scarlet Hot Spring, a Bath of Blood
[Mission: Proceed to the town of Yusui and eliminate the one hundred demons entrenched there.]
[Note: This mission carries an extremely high risk factor. Please proceed with caution.]
After hearing the prompt, Sisho blinked several times. Thirty demons? One hundred demons? He wasn't sure if the Demon Slayer Corps' intelligence was wrong, or if he had misheard. He listened to the prompt again and realized it was indeed one hundred demons.
For a moment, Sisho felt like a stampede of wild beasts was rampaging through his mind. He really wanted to find the agent responsible for this intelligence and ask how he had arrived at the number thirty. This wasn't a discrepancy of one or two; it was more than three times the initial estimate!
Tsk, no wonder the system classified it as a mission. I knew it wouldn't be that simple.
Though he felt helpless, it was his choice, and he would see it through. Besides, he wasn't alone. To demons, Yoriichi Tsugikuni was an undisputed god of death. But to the human side, there was no more reliable ally.
In any case, let's go check out that town first.
Led by a Corps member, Sisho successfully rendezvoused with Yoriichi. Under the cover of secrecy, ensuring no one knew of their departure, the two left the Demon Slayer Corps. After a journey of several days, they reached their destination: the town of Yusui, nestled at the foot of a high mountain.
"Yusui town is just ahead. This is as far as I can take you," the guide said.
By the moonlight, Sisho and Yoriichi could see the town in the near distance.
"Right. You be careful as well."
"Yes, sir."
After the guide departed, Sisho and Yoriichi walked towards Yusui. According to the intelligence provided, Yusui was a town whose main industry was tourism. Besides its beautiful scenery of green mountains and clear water, it was most famous for its hot springs. Yusui even had a nickname: "The Capital of Hot Springs."
Entering Yusui, Sisho found that the town didn't seem to be affected by demons at all. It was bustling with tourists, filled with bright lights, wine, and song. Everyone had a smile on their face, with no trace of panic. A unique, intoxicating fragrance seemed to fill the air, enchanting and captivating. Sisho even began to wonder if he had come to the wrong place.
"Let's rest for the night." Yoriichi chose an inexpensive inn and got a room for himself. Yes, he did not get a room for Sisho. The meaning was quite clear.
Master doesn't say it, but he understands me.
Leaping out of the window, Sisho ran towards the largest hot spring inn in town. Since he was in a hot spring town, how could he not take a dip?
Standing at the entrance, Sisho perused the types of hot springs available: Rose Onsen, Jasmine Onsen, Cherry Blossom Onsen. There were all sorts; if you could think of it, the inn could provide it. Finally, Sisho's gaze settled on a name at the very bottom of the list.
Scarlet Onsen.
"Excuse me, but this hot spring is charged separately," the inn's manager, a man with a deathly pale complexion and a face resembling a toad, replied. "If you accept the price, I can prepare it for you now."
"Charged separately?" Curious, Sisho asked, "If that's the case, there must be something special about this Scarlet Onsen, right?"
"The Scarlet Onsen is our inn's signature offering. Just as the name suggests, the spring water is scarlet red." While introducing it, the toad-faced man added mysteriously, "Of course, its specific wonders must be experienced firsthand."
"Then I'll choose this one!"
Making a swift decision, Sisho paid the fee and entered the area of the Scarlet Onsen. Just as the manager had said, the water was indeed scarlet. Not only that, but the air was filled with a cloyingly sweet scent. Although the spring was large, many people had been drawn by its fame. After searching for a while, Sisho finally found a suitable spot.
"Ooh~"
As his whole body sank into the hot spring, a pleasant warmth spread through him. A tingling numbness arose from within, and Sisho let out an unconscious sigh. This hot spring really is something special.
As time passed, Sisho began to feel a little dizzy. Have I been soaking for too long? I feel a bit groggy, my mind is getting fuzzy.
Whatever, I'll just soak a little longer and then get out.
He slowly closed his eyes, planning to leave in a short while. The scarlet water continued to emit steam, and none of the people in the spring seemed to want to leave.
Unnoticed, a man who was soaking with his eyes closed suddenly sank beneath the water.
Plop.
The small splash was almost negligible in the large spring, and one person among so many was hardly noticeable.
A little while later, a woman also sank silently.
Three, four, five… as the number of sinking people increased, the color of the spring seemed to grow even more scarlet. The scent in the air also grew richer.
In his drowsy state, Sisho felt that the spring water beneath him had changed somehow. It felt as if ink had been poured into pure water. The feeling of two different liquids mixing was sticky and uncomfortable.
His eyelids twitched. Sisho wanted to open his eyes, but every time he inhaled the sweet fragrance in the air, the desire to do so faded. Finally, he was the only one left floating on the surface.
Beneath the red water, a tentacle as wide as two fingers emerged from below. Following the current, the tentacle slowly approached Sisho. Two meters, one meter, half a meter… In the next second, the tentacle touched his skin. The previously lifeless-seeming tentacle suddenly sprang to life, coiling like a python striking its prey, intending to bind Sisho tight.
!
Sensing the foreign presence, Sisho's body detected the killing intent and reacted instantly. His tightly shut eyes snapped open, and he grabbed the tentacle on his body. What is this thing?!
With no time to think, he slammed his elbow into the wall of the spring behind him.
BAM!
A huge burst of force instantly blew a large hole in the wall. The red spring water gushed out through the opening and quickly drained away. The scene at the bottom of the spring was revealed.
Where there should have been solid ground, there was now a large pit. Seven or eight tentacles extended from the hole, stretching out for more than ten meters. Several of them were wrapped around human bodies. From their pale skin and bulging eyes, it was clear they were already dead.
As if sensing Sisho's actions, all the tentacles quickly retracted. There's a demon under the hot spring!
Realizing this, Sisho tightened his grip on the tentacle that had bound him.
SNAP!
The sound of a break echoed as the demon below sacrificed its limb to escape.
Watching the demon retract all its tentacles, Sisho knew he had been tricked.
Tsk. He knew there were demons in this town, but he never expected them to be so brazen in their hunting. Everyone except me is dead.
Glancing around, Sisho found he was the only one left in the vast area. The drained spring water was mixed with a large amount of blood, likely drained by the demon to reduce the volume of the corpses.
Just as Sisho was wondering what to do next, another group of people pushed open the doors and walked toward him.
Not good!
Realizing what was about to happen, Sisho's heart began to pound. In the next second, the man at the front of the group noticed the strange state of the Scarlet Onsen.
"There's been a murder!"
In an instant, Sisho was surrounded by the people who had come to soak in the hot spring.
