Chapter 329: The False, The Real
Several strong security guards were knocked to the ground by Li Mo, but the tranquilizer had already been injected into his system. It wouldn't be long before he collapsed.
However, the scene everyone expected did not happen. Li Mo, as if seeing red, grabbed a patient who couldn't move and slammed them against the wall.
The people were crying, the cicadas were chirping.
On the battlefield, Li Mo, bathed in blood, wiped the stains from his face, grabbed the light blade, and with a rough aim, smashed it into the head of the Emperor-class Honkai Beast.
With a "boom," the head fell to the ground.
As Li Mo ran past the corpse of the Emperor-class Honkai Beast, he lowered his head and kept apologizing as if in repentance.
"I'm sorry! I'm sorry!"
Li Mo's eyes were bloodshot. He once again grabbed a patient. The Honkai Beast in his hands tried to struggle, but Li Mo gave it no chance to resist, quickly smashing it to the ground.
"I don't know which side is real! I can't tell! I really can't tell!"
With that, Li Mo picked up the broken limb of the Emperor-class Honkai Beast, tore it off, and used it as a weapon.
Li Mo resolutely charged into the battlefield, his face a mixture of confusion and determination.
It didn't matter which world was real.
Surviving was the only thing that mattered.
"I'm sorry. At this point, I can't even ask for your forgiveness… I can't stop," Li Mo said, dragging the light blade and charging into the beast tide. While killing the Honkai Beasts, his own wounds were constantly healing.
Fear makes one weak. The instinct for survival and the obsession deep in his soul made him omnipotent.
I can't die, I can't die…
I must live…
For…
For what?
I don't know…
But I absolutely cannot die…
She is waiting for me, they are waiting for me…
She?
They?
Who?
…
Li Mo didn't know what he had forgotten. It seemed to be something very important. He only knew that he absolutely could not die.
Once his consciousness dissipated, he would truly die.
He couldn't die. There must… there must be something waiting for him to do…
On the other side, in the Eigenworld, before the outbreak of the Third Honkai Eruption.
Time and the world had undergone a bizarre transformation—
At Chiba Academy, Kiana transferred to the first year of high school and met the down-and-out scion of ME Corp, her second-year senior, Raiden Mei, on the rooftop.
Kevin Kaslana had not emerged from the bubble universe. World Serpent was under the basic management of key members like Gray Serpent.
Schicksal was still controlled by Otto Apocalypse, and the Herrscher of the Void project was proceeding in an orderly manner.
The only difference from the original story was the Bizarre trio who had crossed worlds and arrived in the Eigenworld through a Bizarre cave: MEI, Pardofelis, and Elysia.
Their home world had been completely destroyed, leaving them no choice but to come to another world to live.
The number of Bizarre entities had greatly decreased, almost to a negligible amount.
They had arrived in the Eigenworld long ago. In over a decade, they had only dealt with seven paranormal incidents, both large and small, and each one was extremely easy.
Easier than drinking water.
Pardofelis would mindlessly slaughter them and then complete herself. Elysia would just directly purify them.
The already incomplete ghosts had no chance to spread.
Even if MEI encountered a ghost alone, she wouldn't be too worried. With her extraordinary observation skills and intellect, she could solve most of them herself. If she couldn't, she would use an accessory with Elysia's Rule to stall until Elysia arrived.
However, as time went on, the other worlds gradually showed no signs of Bizarre phenomena. They were all concentrated in the Eigenworld.
The three of them became extremely busy…
Night fell quietly, and the city transitioned from clamor to silence.
The streets were empty, draped in a hazy veil by the fine rain. The raindrops fell softly.
MEI held an umbrella, carrying a bag full of snacks, and strolled alone on the street.
The bluestone path under her feet was wet with rain, reflecting a faint, soft light.
The stream beside her gurgled, its surface reflecting the mottled lights and occasional willow shadows from both banks, swaying gently with the ripples.
Streetlights stood along the river, their light flickering in the rain.
MEI looked up and stared at a streetlight, finding nothing unusual.
"A bad connection? It's flickering, but this has never happened before."
"Is it a Bizarre thing? But I don't feel the unique cold aura of a Bizarre, and the accessory—the crystal pendant—isn't reacting either."
MEI pressed her temples, wondering if she was just too tired.
Although the number of ghosts had increased recently, it wasn't to the point where she would encounter one every few steps.
The probability was only slightly higher than being struck by lightning on a rainy day.
At least, as long as she didn't actively seek them out, she had never run into a ghost.
MEI quickened her pace, continuing toward home. An imperceptible figure appeared on the surface of the dark stream, gazing at the advancing MEI.
MEI had a very strange feeling. She looked up at the sky ahead but didn't feel the coolness of raindrops on her skin, nor were her clothes dampened by the wind-blown rain.
This was not logical.
It seemed there was an invisible barrier in the void, blocking all the rain, preventing it from touching her at all.
Just as MEI was puzzled, the next second, she felt a wave of dizziness.
Elysia's accessory flashed with a dazzling pink light. When MEI regained consciousness, she found that her geographical location had changed dramatically.
A vast indoor space.
Behind her were piles of various goods, and… many people huddled together in a corner for warmth.
A warehouse? Living people?
"The ghost's Rule, is it…?" MEI looked down at the occasionally flashing pink accessory and roughly understood what had happened.
"If you get close, you get pulled into this warehouse, but you don't die. The killing rule is unknown, but I should be able to figure it out soon."
MEI's calm analysis didn't cause much of a stir among the others. A Far Eastern man in his thirties, upon seeing MEI, nearly had his eyes pop out. He stood up and swayed as he walked over.
"We're all going to die anyway, might as well have some fun first!"
As his words fell, the crisp sound of a pistol being cocked echoed in everyone's ears in the warehouse.
"One more step, and you will die."
MEI held the gun with one hand, the muzzle raised and aimed directly at the middle-aged man.
The man was clearly a little scared, but out of concern for his pride, he forced a smile and shouted, "I don't believe you'd…"
Bang!
Before he could finish, MEI pulled the trigger. The bullet grazed the man's ear, severing a few strands of hair.
"Can I interpret this as you seeking a painful death?" MEI's calm tone made the man back down.
"I, I was just kidding…" the man retreated.
She looked like a college student, who would have thought she'd be carrying a gun and know how to use it.
Some of the others, seeing the gun in MEI's hand and her commanding presence, broke into smiles on their gloomy faces.
"Are you from the Far East military? Are you here to save us?!"
MEI paused for a moment, then nodded.
This identity would help her quickly understand the situation. And from a certain perspective, she was indeed from the military.
In the now-destroyed Fire Moth, she had been the highest-ranking human leader.
"Tell me, what's the situation here? Be as detailed as possible. You all speak first, then I'll ask questions, and those who know can answer," MEI said quickly, then hesitated for half a second before adding, "I will find a way to get you out."
The first sentence was her objective. The added sentence was purely to quickly establish trust.
But promises, in the face of life and death, were not as firm as people thought, except for those who held fast to their principles.
MEI glanced around. There were about fifteen people in the warehouse. A small number were missing limbs, incomplete.
The bullets in her gun were limited. She had already used one, with six remaining.
If she got into a life-or-death conflict with these people, she would definitely be at a disadvantage.
The top priority was to obtain information and escape this Bizarre space contaminated by a ghost.
The Bizarre space was closely related to the real space, but they were not the same. A warehouse like this actually existed in reality, but even if living people from reality came to the warehouse, they would not be able to observe them.
A young female student took the initiative to step forward and explain, "We were all walking in different open-air places, and then we just fainted for no reason. When we woke up, we found ourselves in this warehouse. It was the same for everyone. We all appeared in the warehouse out of thin air while unconscious."
"You're the most special because when everyone first arrived at the warehouse, they were all unconscious for several hours. Only you weren't. You must have a way to get us out, right?"
MEI didn't answer this question, instead choosing to delve into one point: "Before you fainted, were the streetlights flickering, and was it raining?"
The girl immediately responded excitedly, "Yes, that's what happened to me!"
Then, the others in the warehouse successively gave affirmative replies.
MEI adjusted her black-rimmed glasses. She was about to ask another detail but dismissed the idea when she saw the wet corners of several people's clothes.
She had originally wanted to ask if anyone else had experienced the rain being blocked by something, like she had. Now it seemed they hadn't.
"What else? What's in these boxes behind you? There are a few openings. Who took them? And what's inside?" MEI asked, focusing on the point she was most concerned about.
Normal items in a Bizarre space were generally not normal. Besides these boxes, the warehouse only had one door and two rows of windows.
The door and windows were passive objects, but the boxes were different.
The danger was clearly linked to the boxes.
After MEI spoke, no one stood up to reply for a long time. After about two minutes, a young man, holding back his vomit, pointed a finger behind MEI.
MEI turned around and found some bits of flesh, fingernails, and a huge bloodstain and claw marks being dragged out.
From the width, it looked like a person had been dragged out of the warehouse.
"There's a ghost outside! It's really a ghost!"
"I know. I also know that ghosts can't be killed. Get to the point," MEI interrupted his shouting.
If there were no ghosts, she would be downstairs at her home by now.
The accessory was connected to Elysia. Logically, the moment she triggered the Bizarre Rule, Elysia should have been able to sense the change in aura and rush over.
In terms of time, she should have arrived by now.
Was this ghost that special? To be able to contend with Elysia…
MEI didn't pin all her hopes on Elysia. At this point, if she just waited for someone else to save her, she wouldn't deserve to get out of a paranormal incident alive.
She had to rely more on herself.
"Okay, okay." The man was shaken by MEI's presence. He shook his head and reorganized his thoughts. "Every once in a while, a ghost will stand at the door and designate a person to take out three things for it in sequence."
A trade?
MEI quickly thought. Most Bizarre phenomena were accompanied by the characteristic of a trade. But what could people who suddenly appeared in a warehouse offer to trade with a ghost?
The boxes?
Is there something the ghost wants in the boxes?
No, if that were the case, why would someone have been dragged away by the ghost before?
"What if you can't give it what it wants?" MEI asked.
The man swallowed hard and said fearfully, "Then you end up like the one at the door… The trade fails, and you get dragged out and killed by the ghost… There used to be over thirty people in the warehouse."
"Some others wanted to resist, but ghosts can't be killed. I saw with my own eyes those who went up have their necks snapped by the ghost, and then… and then…"
MEI interrupted, "No need to recall these painful and meaningless deaths. Tell me more useful information."
"Okay, okay."
The young man adjusted his thoughts and said quickly, "The ghost will designate a person and ask for three things in sequence. These things are on our own bodies."
"The ghost cannot be resisted. The trade must be made. The chosen person must take out a box within three minutes each time, put what the ghost wants inside, and then personally deliver it to the ghost."
Hearing this, MEI couldn't help but ask, "What if you give it an empty box?"
"The ghost will kill you immediately!"
"Are there any survivors?"
"Yes, it's the one behind me," the man said, stepping aside to reveal a European woman with one missing eye and one missing little finger behind him.
"The ghost's demands will become more and more outrageous. At first, it just wanted a strand of her hair. Then it wanted the little finger of her right hand. Finally, it was her left eye."
"But she was lucky, at least she survived…"
Hmm…
MEI noticed that the European woman who had been chosen by the ghost had manicured nails on all her left-hand fingers, while her right hand was plain. Perhaps it was because the right hand was used most often, making it inconvenient to have a manicure.
She wasn't wearing glasses, which meant her vision was normal.
As for being asked for a strand of hair, it was probably because her hair quality was better than other parts of her body.
Is the ghost asking for perfect things to complete itself?
That was a possibility.
What are the criteria for choosing a person?
MEI's gaze swept over everyone present. She found that the ones with missing parts were not the same. There were able-bodied people who were complete and weak-bodied people with missing parts, which meant the ghost's selection criteria were not what humans would consider based on physical fitness.
The discussion in the warehouse was still ongoing when the sound of rain suddenly started outside the window.
Seeing MEI's arrival, some had mustered up their courage. However, the moment they heard the sound of rain, everyone scrambled back to the corner of the wall.
