Billionaire's Secretive Wife

Chapter 14: Chapter 14. Cruelty

...

"Enough Esther." The voice came from Genesis Stokes, her tone sharp as ice, she had been hearing their conversation with a stoic expression. She had thought that Lilith would humiliate Esther, but she instead got humiliated by Esther. As she approached them her scent of expensive perfume wafted through the air. "Lilith was just trying to be nice, what was the use of mocking her." Genesis snarled coldly, her eyes boring into Esther like daggers. The sound of soft murmurs filled the room as the guests watched the exchange.

"I didn't mock Lilith, I was just being a sisterly figure. Of course, you wouldn't understand, since you have never behaved like one." Esther's voice was laced with venom, her words dripping with sarcasm. The air seemed to vibrate with tension as Genesis's anger grew. "Esther." Genesis's voice was low and menacing, her hand clenched into a fist. She wanted to slap Esther, but was held back by Lilith's gentle touch on her arm.

"Esther is right, she was just being sisterly," Lilith said pitifully, her voice trembling with fake emotion. "I am sorry for behaving impulsively earlier and giving you an off expression of questioning you, Esther. Would you forgive me?" Her eyes were wide with innocence, and her face was pale with a convincing vulnerability. The guests around them seemed to buy into her act, their whispers filling the room.

"I shouldn't have mocked Lilith, look how pitiful she is looking," someone whispered.

"She is the victim here, aargh why did I doubt her,"

another person chimed in. "Look how innocent she is," a third person added. Esther understood Lilith's tricks and mouthed with the same cunningness, her eyes glinting with amusement. "I shouldn't have exasperated too." Her voice was laced with sarcasm, but her expression was neutral.

"Let's settle things with a friendly drink," Lilith later suggested, her voice smooth as silk. When they settled down, the once growing crowd dissipated.

As she spoke, the sound of clinking glasses and muted conversations continued to fill the air, but the atmosphere grew increasingly tense. The grand ballroom, once filled with laughter and music, now felt like a battleground, with Esther and Lilith facing off against each other.

The lights seemed to dim, and the shadows on the walls seemed to grow longer, like specters looming over the room. The air was heavy with unspoken words, and the silence between them was oppressive.

Finally, their drinks arrived, and Lilith handed Esther the glass of wine as planned. "Have this, sister. It really tastes quite nice," she said, her voice dripping with sweetness.

Esther took the glass, her fingers brushing against Lilith's as she did so. The touch sent a spark of electricity through Lilith's body, and she felt a shiver run down her spine.

The wine seemed to glow in the glass, like a ruby-red gemstone. As Esther gulped down the drink, Lilith felt her heart skip a beat. She had been so sure that Esther would fall for her plan, and now she watched as Esther's eyes began to glaze over.

The sound of Esther's swallow was audible, and Lilith's eyes followed the movement of her throat as she swallowed. The wine seemed to warm Esther's chest, and she felt a pleasant buzzing in her head. But beneath it, she was still in control, still playing the game.

Lilith smiled to herself, thinking that her plan was working perfectly. But little did she know, Esther was just playing along.

...

After Esther emptied her glass with a hefty gulp, her ice clinked against the sides of the glass. Lilith poured another until they were ten empty bottles on the table, the sound of shattering glass and pouring liquid filling the air.

Now the drink started to take an effect on Esther, whose face was flush and red from intoxication. Her senses were blurred and her eyes drowsy, her eyelids heavy.

"Are you okay Sister," Lilith asked, catching the almost falling Esther, her voice laced with concern. Esther didn't respond, only dashing to the nearest bathroom where she threw up mercilessly, the sound of retching echoing through the bathroom door. The bitter taste of vomit filled her mouth, and she felt a wave of dizziness wash over her.

She had thought she was used to drinking, since she had taken alcohol occasionally at business gatherings, but today proved that she was still not used to the after effect. She felt lighter when she puked out the substance, her gut telling her that something was added to her drink.

The cold water she splashed on her face was a relieved her a bit. When she came out of the bathroom afterwards, Lilith was staring at her, studying her movement and expression, her eyes piercing.

"You don't look quite well, let me take you to a room to rest," she suggested with an innocent expression. Her voice was sweet and gentle, but Esther's instincts were screaming warning signs.

Her heart was pounding in her chest and her head aching from drinking. The room spun around her, and she couldn't see clearly, only blurry images before she fainted. Lilith who caught her again, smiled devilishly, her plan had succeeded perfectly. The smile was fleeting, but it sent a chill down Esther's spine, even in her unconscious state.
