Billionaire's Hidden Truth

Chapter 3: Chapter 3: The Surface Of The Enermies

Linda's POV

The days that followed seemed to fly by. Kevin and I were the ideal couple to everyone else on the occasions we attended. However, Kevin grew aloof when we were by ourselves and the cameras weren't flashing. He continued to be kind to me, smiling when I needed it, opening doors, and holding my arm. However, something was different. I didn't know why, but it felt like he had erected a wall.

After yet another glitzy dinner party one evening, I found it impossible to remain silent. I glanced at him as we entered his penthouse elevator.

"Are you alright, Kevin?" My voice was gentle as I asked.

His face was unreadable when he looked at me. "Why are you asking?"

"I'm not sure. I bit my lip and remarked, "You've been... distant lately." "Did I do something?"

I briefly believed I detected a spark of something concern, perhaps as his forehead furrowed. However, it vanished as swiftly. "No, Linda. It's not you.

"So what is it? "You're acting differently," I pressed, becoming more irritated. "You seem to be hiding something from me because you're always so cautious."

Kevin rubbed his temples and moaned. You don't have to know everything. Things you don't care about.

However, I am involved in this, am I not? Don't you think I should know the truth if we're just acting like we're together? Even if my voice faltered, I refused to back down.

Kevin didn't respond, but his eyes softened. I stood there, more perplexed and unsure than ever, as the elevator doors slid open and he left without saying another word.

I was left alone in Kevin's enormous apartment when he departed early the following morning for a meeting. I explored the opulent chambers, attempting to understand everything. Kevin would retreat just when I felt like I was beginning to know him, leaving me feeling as though I was missing a vital component.

I was enjoying a cup of coffee on the couch when the door opened and a man I had never seen before entered as if he owned the house. He shared Kevin's keen features, height, and broad shoulders, but his eyes were colder and darker. Before focusing on me, he glanced around the room.

"You must be Linda," he remarked in a smooth, deep voice. "Kevin's most recent project."

I blinked, surprised at how direct he was. "I apologize, but who are you?"

He took a step closer, grinning. Donald Nathan. Kevin's elder brother.

This was the notorious Nathan, I see. At some of the gatherings, I had heard rumours. Though it was only in passing, Kevin had indicated that he had an older brother, and I sensed that they were at odds.

"Why are you in this place?" Trying to speak steadily, I asked.

With a casual glance around the room, Nathan shrugged. I wanted to see how my younger brother was doing. It appears that he has put himself in a difficult predicament.

I squinted. "What is the intended meaning of that?"

Nathan grinned more broadly. "You're not sure, are you? Fascinating. He halted, staring up and down at me with penetrating eyes. Kevin's account is barely half the whole story. It would be prudent for you to avoid it.

A shiver went down my back. "What are you discussing?"

However, the front door opened once again before he could respond, and Kevin entered. His expression clouded as his eyes instantly met Nathan's.

"Nathan," Kevin remarked in a tense tone. "Why are you in this place?"

Nathan laughed. "I was just chatting amiably with your little girlfriend. Kev, you never told me you were going to bring someone into the family business.

I could sense the tension between the two brothers as Kevin's jaw tightened. "Nathan, this has nothing to do with you."

Nathan crossed his arms and remarked, "Oh, I think it has everything to do with me." "Little brother, you're playing a deadly game. Additionally, I won't allow you to bring the business down with you.

As they continued their disagreement, Kevin and Nathan walked into the corridor, their voices fading. Nathan was upset, even if I couldn't hear all he said.

"You believe you can manage this by yourself?" Nathan's voice lifted a little. "Kevin, you're in over your head. Linda, this girl, is a liability. With her, you're making a mistake.

"Nathan, I don't need your advice," Kevin retorted in a chilly tone. "Avoid getting involved."

Nathan gave a sour laugh. "This is something you will regret. Additionally, don't count on me to tidy up your mess when everything has fallen apart.

My heart was thumping in my chest. What was happening? Why was Nathan so certain that Kevin was wrong to bring me into it? What precisely was Kevin concealing?

Nathan was gone before I could comprehend it, as the front door banged. For a moment, Kevin stood with stiff shoulders. After a moment of hesitation, I approached him.

"Kevin," I muttered. "What was the purpose of that?"

He didn't look in my direction. "There is nothing to be concerned about."

I scowled as annoyance rose within me. You say that all the time. However, I did hear Nathan's words. He believes that I am a mistake. Why?

At last, Kevin turned to face me, but his face was unreadable. "Nathan has no idea what he's discussing."

"Does he not?" I crossed my arms and asked. Because it looks like there's a lot you're not telling me from where I'm standing. And I need to know what's happening if I'm going to maintain this façade.

After a prolonged period of silence, Kevin let out a sigh. "Linda, it's complicated. My brother and my family are all entangled in business and past grudges. Nathan has always sought to discredit me, and he will stop at nothing to achieve this goal. Include you.

My mind was racing as I found myself wandering the home once more later that day. As usual, Kevin had been evasive and had not provided me with specific answers. I was even more interested now, though. What was Kevin and his brother's true relationship like? And why did Nathan appear to be so intent on undermining him?

I heard voices as I passed Kevin's office. I couldn't help but lean in to listen because the door was slightly open.

Nathan's voice remarked, "Kevin, you can't keep this up." "You're risking something dangerous."

With a clipped tone, Kevin answered, "I know what I'm doing."

"Do you? Because it appears like you're going to burn everything to the ground from where I am standing," Nathan retorted. "With Linda in mind... It's an error. She is being put at risk by you.

A beat skipped in my chest. Risk? What threat?

Kevin added in a hushed, almost protective tone, "I won't let anything happen to her." "I'll take care of it."

The sound of Nathan's laughter was harsh and vicious. "You believe you can keep her safe? You were unable to defend yourself.

I held my breath throughout the lengthy silence, attempting to process what I was hearing. What am I being protected from? What did Kevin conceal?

"Nathan, you have no idea what you're talking about," Kevin finally remarked.

Nathan answered, "Oh, I believe I do." "And you will lose everything when she discovers the truth."

My blood became chilly. What is the truth? What did Kevin not want me to know?

It was too late for me to realize that I had leaned too far when the door creaked. Both of my brothers turned to face me when the door opened. While Nathan smirked, obviously amused by my eavesdropping, Kevin's eyes widened in disbelief.

"Linda," Kevin uttered in a strained tone. "You've been standing there for how long?"

Unsure of how to react, I swallowed hard. "Enough time."

For the first time, I noticed something frightening in Kevin's eyes as they darkened. His face was unreadable as he stepped toward me. "That shouldn't have been heard by you."

With my heart pounding, I took a small step back. "What, Kevin, what's going on?"

Even though he didn't respond, I could tell everything I needed to know from the expression in his eyes. There was no turning back now that I had heard too much.

Kevin took a deep breath, his jaw clenched. "We need to talk, Linda."
