Chapter 4: Chapter 4: Secrete Personas
Linda's POV
I stood motionless as Kevin's words replayed in my head. "We must speak." He took a step forward, his face solemn. My heart was racing. What was so crucial that I had heard?
"There are things I haven't told you because it's safer that way," he said, his voice lower now.
"Safer?" I narrowed my eyes and repeated. Kevin, what do you mean? Who is safer, you or me?
He looked frustrated as he exhaled and combed through his hair. The two of us. It's not that I don't want to tell you the truth, but there are some complex issues. My business, my family it's not what you think.
I crossed my arms and shouted, "Then tell me." "I have a right to know what I'm getting into."
I caught a glimpse of vulnerability in Kevin's eyes as he glanced at me. "Linda, there are individuals who would use you to reach me. I have become aloof because of this. I'm attempting to keep you safe.
"What do you protect me from?" My voice rose in exasperation as I asked. "Kevin, you're not making sense! I cannot participate in this phone connection if I am unaware of what is happening.
His jaw was clenched, obviously torn. "I swear that when the moment is appropriate, I will tell you everything. But for now, you must have faith in me.
Have faith in him? Since everything he said only increased my suspicions, how could I possibly trust him? My voice trembled as I said, "I don't know if I can do that."
I resisted Kevin's attempt to touch my arm. "Please, Linda."
I shook my head, though. "Kevin, I have no idea who you are."
My best friend Sophie and I got together at our favourite café later that day. I needed someone to talk to who wasn't involved with Kevin's situation. I knew Sophie would give me honest advice because she was always the pragmatic one.
"So, what's the matter between Mr. Mysterious and you?" While drinking her coffee, Sophie inquired.
I sighed and distractedly stirred my tea. "Soph, I have no idea. He has something to hide. Something significant. Additionally, I'm not sure if I should stay to see what it is.
Sophie scowled. "What are you saying? What is he concealing?
I informed her about Kevin's refusal to provide me with definitive answers and the odd conversation I had overheard him having with his brother, Nathan.
With a furrowed brow, Sophie remarked, "That sounds... sketchy." "You must use caution, Linda. This person seems to have a lot of baggage, and you hardly know him.
"I understand," I whispered. What if, however, he is speaking the truth? What if he is genuinely attempting to keep me safe?
"Or what if you're being used by him?" Sophie retorted. "See, I understand. He is mysterious, wealthy, and attractive. But you should be on the lookout for guys like that. You do not wish to suffer harm.
I knew in my heart that she was correct, therefore her comments hurt. I couldn't get rid of the idea that I was being pulled into something risky because Kevin had been nothing but evasive and secretive.
"I simply... I felt lost and said, "I don't know what to do."
"Do some research," Sophie said. "Find the truth on your own if he refuses to tell it to you. However, until you have the complete tale, avoid becoming overly attached to him.
Kevin and I went to another high-profile event that night. Everyone else thought we were the ideal pair, as usual. On the inside, though, I was having trouble maintaining the façade. Every chuckle was hollow, every grin fake. Even though he was paying attention, Kevin remained aloof.
I heard bits and pieces of talk that made my stomach turn as we mixed with the visitors. People were discussing Kevin, his family, his history, and how little they knew about him.
One man questioned another, "Do you know where Kevin Donald came from?" "It appears that nobody knows anything about his past."
The other man answered, "He's a mystery." "People claim that he suddenly showed up and began establishing his empire."
As I listened, my heart was pounding. It was accurate to say that before meeting Kevin, I knew very little about him. And the more I listened, the more I understood that I was not alone in this.
Later, as we were standing together by the bar, a tall, stern-looking man with keen eyes came up to Kevin. He grinned and said, "Kevin Donald." "Should I say something else instead?"
I could sense the tension between them as Kevin's face stiffened. Kevin remarked coolly, "I have no idea what you're talking about."
The man laughed. You don't, of course. However, some of us have nostalgic memories. Donald, exercise caution. It's easy for the past to catch up with you.
Kevin was distressed when he left. I looked at him, but he turned to me with a tight smile before I could ask him why. "Leave now."
After we returned to Kevin's penthouse that evening, I couldn't get rid of the uneasy sense that something was amiss. The more I considered everything that had transpired, the more I understood that Kevin was concealing something significant rather than merely maintaining secrets.
Kevin went to sleep, and I snatched up my laptop and began looking. It was difficult because there wasn't a lot of information about Kevin Donald on the internet. However, I was adamant. I would discover the truth on my own if he refused to tell it to me.
I searched for hours before finding something a picture tucked away in an old article. The sight of it almost made my heart stop. Although the man in the picture bore a striking resemblance to Kevin, the name underneath it was not Kevin Donald.
It was a completely new name, one that I had never heard of. My thoughts were racing as I gazed at the television. Really, who was Kevin? And why was he adopting a false persona?
The gravity of the situation struck me and I felt a chill go down my spine. Kevin was living a lie in addition to hiding secrets.
And suddenly I found myself in the center of it.
I looked over at Kevin, who was still asleep, completely unaware of what I had just discovered. My heart pounded in my chest. What was I supposed to do now? Should I confront him? Or was I in too deep already?
