Chapter 53
“Don’t you know?”
Still, Pabel hid his true feelings and soothed Alexandra.
For what he wanted, he had to cater to Alexandra’s whims for now.
Speaking words he didn’t mean wasn’t difficult, so Pabel sweetly whispered, like a carnivorous plant luring its prey.
“There’s a way to ruin her by attacking her background, don’t worry.”
“I want something more certain. Helga, she’s just a fool who can only shoot arrows, but Cherishe is different!”
“Yes, yes. I’ll think of a way. In the meantime, why don’t you focus on what you’re going to wear to the party?”
“What about you? What will you wear?”
Pabel had never disappointed Alexandra when plotting his schemes, so her response softened slightly.
“Well, maybe a light purple suit.”
The maids, who had been suffering from Alexandra’s tantrums, were relieved and happy to see her attention shift to Pabel.
As Pabel helped choose from the array of lace, embroidery, and jewelry, he thought of Cherishe. She must be asleep with a pale face by now.
What would look best on her?
Her light blonde hair, almost like wheat, would look best in pastel colors.
Light pink or purple, perhaps.
Oh, light green would be cute too.
She would look like a freshly grown sprout.
“Oh, by the way. Genovia will soon be imprisoned. She should be by now.”
“What?”
“Tell Rickraz that. Understand?”
The charge would be threatening a royal under ten years old with Dragon Heart.
But that was just a pretext; they would investigate her to find out what enhanced her strength.
‘But the desire fruit evaporates after being absorbed and releasing desires.’
There would be no solid evidence.
They couldn’t accuse him of being a demon with just this prank.
Pabel picked up a brush made of horsehair and started brushing Alexandra’s hair instead of a maid.
He enjoyed dressing and grooming dolls, so this kind of service was natural for him.
“Wait. Explain properly. What’s going on?”
Alexandra slapped Pabel’s hand away, throwing a tantrum.
The brush clattered and rolled across the smooth marble floor. Pabel, staring at it, murmured lazily.
“This is boring.”
Alexandra shrank back instinctively, feeling fear.
When Alexandra couldn’t control her temper and acted willfully, Pabel would stop indulging her and issue a warning.
He didn’t need to be overly threatening.
Just revealing a bit of his demonic aura was enough to scare her.
He usually hid it, but he showed his true form when Alexandra needed a lesson.
‘Ugh… so annoying.’
Being with Alexandra had been tolerable, but not anymore.
A new, more tempting presence had appeared.
‘But I can’t give up everything here. I already made a contract, even if it’s a half-baked one.’
He needed to explain, as it was his contractor asking.
“It’s simple. We’re eliminating competition.”
“Genovia is my piece.”
“Discard unnecessary pieces, Alexandra. We can replace them with new ones.”
At his gesture, a trembling maid hurriedly brought a new brush, trying to hide her shaking hands.
Was her name Jessica Fever?
Pabel, lost in thought, continued brushing Alexandra’s hair, speaking casually.
“We’re accelerating the succession struggle.”
“Why now? You said it would start when I turn fifteen?”
“Just felt like it.”
Pabel’s smile made Alexandra even more upset.
Pabel always answered her questions because of their contract, but he never revealed his true thoughts.
What kind of servant is that?
Alexandra suddenly felt sorry for herself and pouted.
‘Dad sent him as my servant.’
It was about a year ago.
Pabel appeared.
From the start, Alexandra disliked Pabel, who was far more beautiful than her.
Silver hair, pale skin.
Despite his childlike appearance, his deep purple eyes were unsettling.
And his expression.
Was it called ‘cynical’?
He always looked like he wanted to destroy everything out of boredom.
Yet he acted servile to her.
As if he was reluctantly indulging her, making it clear he considered himself superior to her, the Princess.
‘Dad’s letter had a short command to keep Pabel by my side.’
She inferred that Dad wanted to use Pabel, who had special abilities despite not being royal, to monitor the palace.
Since then, Pabel had acted like a servant, brushing her hair and choosing her clothes.
He always wore luxurious suits and occasionally disappeared, but other than that, there was no explanation.
Pabel revealed nothing beyond his name.
Judging by his manners and etiquette, he seemed noble, but without a surname, he was likely a commoner. An illegitimate child, perhaps.
She had subtly asked Dad about Pabel, but received no answer.
Dad’s letter just said to leave Pabel alone, as he was her contracted protector.
‘But what is a contractor?’
Thinking of the unhelpful letter, Alexandra pouted.
Pabel said they were connected, so he was here to grant her every wish.
‘Proof of connection.’
Alexandra glanced at her left ankle, barely visible under her skirt.
She had a mark there since birth.
She couldn’t tell if it was a letter or just a symbol.
From a distance, it looked like a small dot, but…
She always felt uneasy about it until Pabel showed her his wrist, revealing the same mark.
That was proof of their connection.
Pabel had the same mark, identical in size and shape.
‘Yet sometimes he looks at me with such disdain, like I’m a useless burden.’
Then he talks about connections and all that sweet talk!
“I like that useless people die quickly. But won’t I be suspected?”
Alexandra, simmering with anger, asked sharply.
If they were connected from birth, she wanted to hold the reins.
“That won’t happen. Few people know about my existence with you, Alexandra.”
A flicker of annoyance crossed Pabel’s purple eyes.
He glanced at the maid, Jessica Fever, standing like a piece of furniture, and faked a gentle tone.
“Don’t replace the maid again. It’s tiresome to eliminate them all.”
“Why should I?”
“I told you. We’re intensifying the succession struggle. Didn’t you… understand?”
Feigning surprise, Pabel’s mockery made Alexandra even angrier.
She often thought Pabel had no affection for her.
Every time he treated her like a foolish child, she wanted to stomp on him, but instinctively knew she couldn’t.
Pabel was stronger.
‘And he doesn’t like me.’
Alexandra felt like crying and bit her lip harder.
“Anyway, I’ll get rid of the annoying one soon. How about that?”
“…Fine.”
Jessica’s face turned pale at their conversation.
But she couldn’t ask who they were talking about or what ‘get rid of’ meant.
Fear rooted her feet to the spot.
Her lips trembled, and she bowed her head.
A predator.
It felt like teeth were at her throat, and she started to sweat.
“Isn’t your life a bit annoying right now?”
Two shoes appeared in her view.
Clearly a child’s, but why didn’t they feel that way?
Why did he seem like an ancient beast?
“Wh-what do you mean?”
“Oh, you know. Isn’t it frustrating, not being treated well?”
He’s a demon. He must be.
Jessica crossed herself with a trembling hand.
She wasn’t fully aware of what she was saying.
“Haphneous! Save me. Oh God!”
“Funny. God left this world long ago.”
Watching Jessica, Pabel twisted his lips.
Humans were ignorant.
They didn’t know there was no true god in this world.
They wouldn’t realize that what they worshiped wasn’t a god.
“I can make your life much better. Contract with me.”
