Short Chapter
"It's not that I don't trust you. You seem like a good person, and I don't doubt your leadership," Shiro admitted, his expression serious. "But the truth is, I'm just not comfortable with the idea of becoming a devil. At least, not yet. And honestly? I don't know much about your peerage compared to Rias's."
Sona studied him for a moment before nodding. "I can understand that. But if I may ask, why didn't you join her peerage? You've had plenty of opportunities."
Shiro scratched his chin, his lips tugging into a half-smile. "Well, for starters, I already said I'm not keen on becoming a devil. But I'm not completely closed off to the idea, either. The bigger problem is my girlfriend—Koneko. She's Rias's rook, and that'd mean I'd basically be answering to two masters. Not exactly ideal."
Sona blinked, clearly surprised. "And the other reason?"
Shiro shuddered. "Akeno."
Tsubaki, who had been silently observing, finally spoke. "What about her?"
Shiro groaned, running a hand down his face. "Every time she sees me, she licks her lips and gives me this look—like she's planning something… intense. It's terrifying."
Sona stifled a laugh, though a small smile tugged at her lips. "I see."
Tsubaki tilted her head slightly. "Have you considered joining any clubs, then?"
Shiro blinked at the sudden change in topic. "Uh… well, about that—I'm apparently not allowed to."
Sona's eyes narrowed. "What? Why not?"
"Some of the guys said clubs only accept people at the start of the year," Shiro explained. "But people keep asking me to join anyway, like the kendo club."
Sona let out a frustrated sigh, pinching the bridge of her nose. "Shiro, don't ever listen to them again. They lied to you."
"Wait, really?" Shiro leaned forward, surprised.
"Yes. Clubs are mandatory at this school. Every student has to be in one."
Shiro stared for a moment before relaxing. "Oh. Good to know." He paused. "But most clubs don't interest me. I need something where I can punch people."
"There's no club like that," Sona said flatly.
"Figures." Shiro rubbed the back of his neck. "What about something that actually helps people? I wouldn't mind something that lets me keep an eye out for trouble or keeps people safe."
Sona's expression softened as she gestured to herself. "You know, I have a position open on the Student Council."
Shiro raised an eyebrow. "What position?"
"It's something the students call The Punisher. Basically, you'd be responsible for deciding punishments for students who break the rules. It's more responsibility than you think."
Shiro's eyes lit up. "I think I'd like that."
Sona offered a rare smile. "Even if you don't end up becoming a devil, I'm glad you'll consider joining the Student Council. That said, you'll need to go through a voting process. It'll be held today, so there's no guarantee you'll get it—but good luck."
She gestured to a side room. "Feel free to use that room if you need to rest before then."
Shiro nodded in appreciation. "Thanks."
"It's no trouble." Sona's tone shifted slightly. "Also, about that rogue priest yesterday…"
Shiro froze for a moment before exhaling. "You saw that, huh?"
"We did," Sona confirmed, her expression sharp. "Next time, make sure to inform either me or Rias about situations like that."
"Got it," Shiro replied. "I'll make sure to give you a heads-up next time."
A sudden grin spread across his face. "Oh, and by the way—checkmate."
Sona's gaze snapped to the chessboard in front of her, her eyes widening in disbelief as she stared at the final move.
Shiro stood, flashing a quick grin. "Well, I need to get to class. Later!"
Sona blinked, still processing the loss as Shiro turned and walked out the door. "Bye, Shiro…"
