American Tax Officer

Chapter 260: Hiding the Beauty in a Golden House, Selina Gets Jealous

"How dare I play tricks on you? It's like this..."

Maggie also knew that given her identity as a spy, once exposed, the incriminating evidence on the USB drive would be very dangerous. Therefore, she placed it on a Daylight train on the railway.

This train was one that spanned thousands of kilometers, and it would not return to Los Angeles for another fifteen days.

"Then it's simple, we just go to where the train is, take the stuff, and be done with it. Why wait so long?"

Nisen said unconvinced.

"No, although the CIA handed me over to you, they must be interested in what I have. I wouldn't rule out that they have already started to surveil you and me. If we deliberately go for it now, it's hard to ensure they won't secretly join the fray to compete for it, which could cause trouble. Of course, if you don't mind the hassle, then I have no objections."

Hearing Maggie say this, David thought about it and found some merit in her words.

On the surface, it seemed that Elvis had compromised by handing her over, but he was definitely interested in what Maggie had.

And given the CIA's style, the possibility that they were secretly watching and even willing to fight for it was not something to ignore.

"Fine, I'll wait 15 days, but you better make sure there are no mistakes with the item!"

To avoid other complications, David still thought it was best to wait for the train to return and quietly retrieve the USB drive, as he only wanted the incriminating evidence as a precaution, not to use it immediately, so a few days' wait wasn't a concern for him.

The car got back on the road, heading towards the Western Suburb Branch.

However, halfway there, Maggie suddenly asked, "Wait... are you taking me to the Western Suburbs Branch?"

"What else do you think? You want me to send you back home now?"

David looked at her as if she were a fool. The meaning was clear—if she left without handing over the evidence or if it was fake, wouldn't he be played for a fool?

"That's not what I mean. We're talking about half a month. Are you really planning to keep me locked up in the Western Suburbs Branch all this time? If that's the case, I might as well go back to the CIA."

Maggie said petulantly.

David thought for a moment and said, "Fine, find her a place..."

"No, other places are too dangerous. Who knows what the CIA will do to me again, right?"

David became impatient and turned to glare at her, saying, "Then what exactly do you want?"

"How about this, let me stay at your place. Even if the CIA agents are bold, they definitely wouldn't dare to cause trouble at your home, right?"

"You sure think highly of yourself."

"It's not about thinking highly, it's about what's good for both you and me..."

In the time that followed, Maggie kept trying to persuade him, and finally, David, who could hardly take it anymore, compromised and directed Bucky to drive towards his apartment.

When they arrived downstairs, seven or eight inspectors were already waiting. One of them came over with an electronic ankle bracelet and put it on Maggie's ankle first.

Then, David took her upstairs to the door, took out the keys, and unlocked it.

The apartment he rented had two rooms, one of which he used as a storage room. After tidying up the other room, he took out the handcuff keys and warned the expectant Maggie, "Now I'm going to open the handcuffs, and you're going to stay here for fifteen days. Once I get the USB drive and confirm there's no problem, I'll take you wherever you want to go. But if you try any tricks... you know the consequences, understand?"

"Very clear."

With her response, David unlocked the handcuffs efficiently and then had someone clean up the room's phone and computer to prevent her from contacting the outside world.

After all was done, he walked out and said to the four inspectors guarding the door, "Keep a close eye on her!"

"Yes, Chief."

In addition to the four inspectors at the door, there were four more stationed at the bottom of the apartment building. This should be safe enough.

However, after getting into the car, David still asked Nisen, "The inspectors you called in are reliable, right?"

"They're all top-notch, retired military personnel. No matter what tricks this woman has up her sleeve, she definitely won't be able to break through their tight security."

"That's good."

...

Today, the Western Suburbs Branch was as busy as ever.

In fact, since Disney announced its surrender and acceptance of penalties, large and small film companies in Hollywood have been scrambling to come here to file their taxes, which has caused considerable administrative pressure on the Western Suburbs Branch. They had to hire a number of temporary workers with high salaries just to maintain operations.

The pressure in the office was immense, so David, the chief, naturally would not have an easy time either. Every day there were numerous documents waiting for his signature and many dossiers for his approval, which was terribly taxing.

At two o'clock in the afternoon, Nisen walked in, placed a stack of files on the desk, and said, "Chief, here is the spy information sent over from the CIA."

"Crap..."

David stopped his work, sighed helplessly, as he was already overwhelmed with the tasks of his own branch and now had to deal with the CIA's spy matters too.

But there was no helping it—since he had agreed, he had to do it.

Noticing David's frustration, Nisen spoke up, "Chief, with the workload from Hollywood and now these matters from the CIA, I think you may need to find an administrative assistant to share the pressure."
