Chapter 22: Chapter 21: The Laboratory Building

Shao Ming crouched by the nearest window and took a quick glance inside. This room seemed like a chemistry lab; the equipment didn't look like it was used for biological research.

He moved closer to the door and, as expected, saw the sign that read "Chemistry Lab."

In the next building, Shao Ming immediately noticed portraits of Newton and Galileo hanging on the walls—this was definitely the physics lab.

After searching around the various buildings, Shao Ming finally found the biology research building.

The door to this building was tightly shut. Shao Ming tried pushing it, but it didn't budge. He moved to the side and tried the window, but it was also locked tight.

He couldn't exactly smash the window, especially with all the mutated creatures around.

As he pondered what he could use to break the window or open the door, he suddenly remembered he had a few bank cards in his bag.

The windows of the school weren't complicated; these buildings, added on about twenty years ago, weren't exactly modern either.

Shao Ming pulled out a bank card, the one with the 200 pounds of scholarship money left from last year. It struck him as a bit amusing—he'd always been too stingy to spend the scholarship money, and now it was practically useless.

He slid the card into the gap of the window and tried moving it a few times. To his surprise, the lock actually shifted a little.

Seeing a glimmer of hope, Shao Ming quickened his movements.

With a satisfying "click," the window creaked open.

Shao Ming grabbed the windowsill and carefully climbed into the laboratory building.

Inside, the room seemed to be an archive. He moved over to the door and carefully pushed it open just enough to peek outside.

The building was dark, the lights off, and the light rain outside couldn't penetrate far enough into the building. The hallway was pitch black, and nothing was visible.

Taking out his phone, Shao Ming turned on the flashlight and approached the sign for directions.

"Second Lab..." He scanned the signs until he found the one for the second lab on the second floor.

He followed the path indicated by his phone's light and ascended the stairs to the second floor.

Once there, he turned off the flashlight and peeked around. Thankfully, this floor seemed to be safe as well.

However, as he passed one of the laboratory rooms, he caught a glimpse of a shadow through the window.

He didn't understand these people. Why were they still here during the curfew? Why not go back to the dorms? Instead, they stayed out, turning into mutated creatures and making things harder for everyone else.

He looked again and realized that this was the second laboratory.

Well, it seemed like only the top-tier students would be able to access this lab. As for him, a "slacker king," he was about to come in and make some noise.

Shao Ming took a deep breath, readying his baseball bat, and pushed the door open.

Inside, the mutated creature immediately turned and lunged at him.

To Shao Ming's surprise, this mutated creature was holding a small knife as it charged.

No surprise there—this was one of the top universities in the world, even their mutated students were armed with scalpels.

The creature slashed at Shao Ming with the scalpel, and he quickly dodged to the side.

Though he avoided the sharp knife, he collided with a table, sending a bunch of unidentifiable bottles and jars crashing to the ground.

Shao Ming was startled. His eyes quickly scanned the room, and thankfully, the microscope on the opposite table had not been broken.

He turned around quickly and kicked the mutated creature, sending it crashing to the floor.

With a swift step forward, he swung the baseball bat toward the creature's head.

Just as he prepared to finish the job, he heard a sound behind him.

Shao Ming spun around in alarm and saw another mutated creature emerging from the other side of the room.

This was bad. He hadn't noticed there was a second one when he came in.

After all the noise from knocking over the bottles and jars, Shao Ming figured there was no point in being discreet anymore. He reached for his gun, pulling it from his waist and firing a shot.

The second mutated creature was unlucky—it literally ran into the barrel of the gun.

The first mutated creature, still holding the scalpel, was getting up, but Shao Ming wasn't going to let it get the chance. He kicked it in the back, sending it crashing back to the floor.

Shao Ming holstered his gun, raised his baseball bat again, and started pounding the creature's head with a series of brutal strikes.

After several hits, the creature stopped moving, and only then did Shao Ming finally pause, panting heavily.

He stood over the fallen creatures, holding his bat in one hand. He really needed a knife—he couldn't keep using the gun as a close-range weapon.

There was no time to think further. He quickly opened his backpack and shoved the microscope inside.

A loud roar echoed from downstairs, and Shao Ming cursed under his breath. These creatures had exceptionally sharp hearing.

He'd finally got the microscope. Shao Ming hastily slung his backpack over his shoulder and sprinted toward the door.

There was no way he could go back the way he came—there were probably still some mutated creatures locked inside, and more had gathered outside the window. Shao Ming had no choice but to run toward the far end of the building.

He dashed down the stairs at the end of the hall to the first floor, but when he reached the bottom, he realized he was stuck. There was no way to return to the courtyard between the buildings. There was only one door leading outside.

At this point, Shao Ming had only two options—brave the street and face the mutated creatures head-on, or go back to the courtyard and try to escape through another building.

He decided to take a bold risk. The noise from earlier had attracted most of the mutated creatures to the center of the laboratory building. This might be the perfect time to slip out through the side door.

He approached the side door, peering out of a nearby laboratory window. A few mutated creatures were running past on the street.

After waiting a few moments, it looked like most of them had gathered near the center of the building. Shao Ming, now prepared with his gun, pushed open the side door.

As expected, most of the mutated creatures were concentrated in the middle of the building—though there were still around ten or so outside.

Since this was a campus road, there weren't too many mutated creatures wandering around. Most of the people who remained inside during curfew weren't many.

Shao Ming didn't hesitate. He quickly made his way toward the dormitory building.
