Chapter 74:

Chapter 74:

Jiang Yuan sat in his car, clearly unsure of what to do. Jiang Feng made no move to get inside, leaving his father stuck in an awkward limbo. Should he step out? Or stay seated? The tension between them hung heavy in the air.

From a distance, Bai Qingqing and Grandma Li approached, sensing the strange atmosphere. They quickly moved to Jiang Feng’s side, protectively flanking him—one on the left, the other on the right. Though they didn’t say a word, their presence was clear: they were standing by Jiang Feng. Bai Qingqing raised her chin and spoke up, her tone sharp and confident.

“You’re Uncle Jiang, right? I’m Bai Qingqing from the Bai Group. My father’s name is Bai Zhaoan. You’ve heard of him, haven’t you?”

Bai Zhaoan?

Of course, Jiang Yuan had heard of him. The name carried immense weight. His expression immediately shifted, becoming more serious and respectful. “Hello, I’m Xiao Feng’s father. Has Xiao Feng caused any trouble during his time here? He’s not used to working hard at home, so I hope he hasn’t been too much of a burden.”

“What?” Bai Qingqing blinked in surprise, her eyebrows knitting into a frown. “Why are you apologizing to us? You should be apologizing to Jiang Feng!”

Jiang Yuan, unaware of the recent developments between his son and Bai Qingqing, had only watched the first episode of the show. He had avoided the rest, fearing that the stress might trigger a heart attack. So, naturally, he misunderstood the situation now, thinking Bai Qingqing was holding a grudge against him and had come to give him trouble.

Realizing his mistake, Jiang Yuan quickly opened the door and got out of the car. He faced Bai Qingqing and offered a deep, sincere apology. “My son may be lazy and have a bad temper, but his heart is in the right place. If he’s upset you, it’s my fault as his father. I wasn’t there for him when he needed guidance. I apologize to you on his behalf.”

He bowed deeply, a full ninety degrees, with the respect one would show a high-ranking official. His sincerity softened the perceptions of both Grandma Li and Bai Qingqing. Though he had been a poor father before, at least now, he was trying to make amends.

“You don’t need to apologize to us for him,” Bai Qingqing said, blushing slightly with awkwardness. “Your son isn’t bad-tempered. In fact, he’s very principled. You just don’t know him well enough. Sure, he loves cleanliness and can be lazy, but I don’t see those as flaws. He’s straightforward, which is far better than being fake and hypocritical. My father likes him a lot and even wants to take him in as his godson.”

Jiang Feng: ??!!

Jiang Yuan looked confused. “Wait, why haven’t I heard anything about this?”

Bai Qingqing coughed, a bit flustered, her gaze flickering nervously. “I… I haven’t had time to tell you yet. But it’s nothing you should worry about. My father was just mentioning it. Anyway, if you ever come to Beijing, you can come to my house. We’re… friends.”

Her voice softened at the end, and her nervousness showed. Although Bai Qingqing had many friends growing up, most only stayed close because of her family background or her looks. But with Jiang Feng, things felt different.

She remembered their first meeting vividly.

“What’s there to know?” he had said. “We’re only here for half a month. I can barely take care of myself, let alone anyone else.”

When they had to switch houses, Jiang Feng had been more disgusted by the condition of the pigsty house than she had been. And when she’d struggled to keep her emotions in check, he hadn’t coddled her like others might have. Instead, he had simply said, “You cry ugly.”

Yet, despite his bluntness, he still ended up switching places with her. As Bai Qingqing thought back to his awkward, caring behavior, a wave of warmth filled her heart. She found herself glancing at him again.

Jiang Feng stood there, the breeze gently tousling his hair. After half a month of living well, his skin had taken on a healthy glow, and he radiated a quiet strength. It was as if he had been polished like a hidden gem, now shining brightly for all to see.

What struck Bai Qingqing most was his effortless confidence, his calm demeanor, and the faint aura of indifference that always lingered in his eyes. All of these things made him captivating in a way she hadn’t expected.

Suddenly, an impulsive thought rose within her.

“Xiao Feng,” she asked softly, “which school are you in? Do you think… I could transfer and sit next to you?”
