Chapter 22: Chapter 21 Holding My Tummy... (Two chapters complete, asking for votes!)
Leaving the hot springs hotel, the dark red sunset stretched their shadows long, a few birds swept across the sky, their silhouettes blurry against the backlight, leaving only fleeting shadows.
The sunset was infinitely beautiful, but dusk was drawing near. Although the street was bustling with people, there was an inexplicable sense of solitude.
Yin Caiyu looked up at the giant Ferris wheel in the distance, which turned slowly under the light blue sky, adorned with beautiful lights.
That was the location of the newly opened Tianhong Amusement Park. It was a massive investment from the get-go and stood among the top in Yupi Country. This Ferris wheel, being the iconic attraction, was hailed as the biggest in the country.
"If you want to go, I'll accompany you after you retire. The amusement park isn't going anywhere."
Shen Mochen held the other's hand, knowing that Yin Caiyu hadn't stopped talking about Tianhong Amusement Park's Ferris wheel ever since its construction began.
"Mhm."
Yin Caiyu smiled, the sunset concealing all the dark corners of the world, including the fleeting look of melancholy that crossed her eyes.
"I'm hungry, let's buy something to eat first."
Yin Caiyu turned her gaze away and touched her stomach, pulling Shen Mochen into a pastry shop by the roadside.
"Would you two like to try our new donuts? There's a discount if you buy them today!" The clerk greeted them with a smile.
"I don't eat donuts," Shen Mochen said indifferently.
"This handsome guy can try a bite. They're really delicious. Even I, who doesn't fancy sweets that much, absolutely love them!"
The clerk was persistent, enthusiastically recommending her favorite treat to the stunningly handsome man.
"I'll wait for you outside."
Shen Mochen said no more to the clerk and walked out after speaking to Yin Caiyu. The poor clerk stood there, puzzled about what she had done wrong.
Yin Caiyu shrugged at the clerk and said with a smile, "Oh, never mind him. He's just a weirdo who's allergic to donuts. Give me a few of those new donuts. Oh, and what's the discount?"
Walking out of the pastry shop with donuts in hand, she saw Shen Mochen chatting with two girls. He waved his hand and, looking disappointed, the girls walked away.
"Hit on again, huh? You're so heartless, not even giving them a spot as friends!"
Yin Caiyu waited for the girls to leave before approaching merrily, slapping Shen Mochen on the butt.
"What's the use? Friends would just get deleted after going back home," Shen Mochen said with a grin.
"Do you want a donut? They're actually quite tasty."
Yin Caiyu took out a donut from the bag and offered it to Shen Mochen.
Shen Mochen turned his face away. "I don't eat them."
Yin Caiyu wrapped her arms around his neck, teasingly saying, "Why bother holding onto such a petty grudge for so many years?"
"I'm not eating it, you're annoying! Take it away, or I'll spit on it!"
"Ew, you're disgusting!" Yin Caiyu had no choice but to stuff the donut into her mouth, muttering as she ate, "It's our own money spent; what's not to eat!"
Shen Mochen glanced down at his phone for the time. "Should we head home now?"
"Going home now is a bit early. Let's watch a movie first... Let me see, there's a movie playing called 'Serenity Love.'"
"That movie is supposedly really bad though."
"As long as there's something to watch, let's go to the movie theater!"
Yin Caiyu held Shen Mochen's hand, which, at some point, had become interlocked with his fingers. Shen Mochen tightened his grip slightly as he watched Yin Caiyu laugh joyfully and crisply in the sunset.
Arriving at the movie theater box office, they queued for tickets.
"Hello, two tickets for 'Serenity Love,' please," Yin Caiyu said.
The cashier quickly printed the movie tickets and asked with a smile, "Okay, would you like some popcorn? We have a couple's combo with a large popcorn and two sodas for only 23 yuan!"
"Oh, we're not a couple," Shen Mochen interrupted Yin Caiyu before she could embarrass herself by pretending to be in a couple to get a discount.
"Ah?" The cashier glanced at their clasped hands, taken aback.
Yin Caiyu declared defiantly, "Can't best girlfriends work? He's my best sis!"
Damn, are all handsome guys gay? The cashier really wanted to look up to the heavens and sigh, but she remembered her job and diligently continued,
"Then would you like a couple's combo? A large popcorn with two colas for just 23 yuan!"
...
"Do you feel like we got ripped off?" In the theater, once Yin Caiyu settled down, she stuffed a piece of popcorn into her mouth.
"Not at all. This large popcorn and cola would normally cost over forty," Shen Mochen watched the big screen, which has already started playing.
"But, outside, it's only around ten!"
"Well, it is a movie theater after all."
"Such profiteering," Yin Caiyu muttered under her breath, hugging the popcorn to herself.
This movie's reputation wasn't great; even though it was a weekend evening, the theater was barely half full.
"The air conditioning in this cinema is set so low, as if it's free!"
Before long, Yin Caiyu leaned against Shen Mochen. Though she nonsensically claimed they were best girlfriends, the cashier had already given them couple's seats before this, and they hadn't changed them.
Couple's seats are essentially two chairs joined together without a divider in the middle. Shen Mochen used to sit in these seats with Yin Huailian, and since they were always at the back, they would sometimes stealthily do things unrelated to watching the movie.
"Serves you right for dressing so coolly; not so hot now, are you?" Shen Mochen reached out to touch Yin Caiyu's belly, which was indeed cool to the touch.
With one arm around her shoulder, he silently rested his other hand on her belly. Yin Caiyu's eyes glimmered with the reflection of the screen as she leaned into his embrace with a smile.
"Want some?"
Yin Caiyu offered a handful of popcorn to Shen Mochen's lips.
Shen Mochen quietly ate it all.
"You got my hand all slobbery!"
Yin Caiyu complained softly, then stuffed another handful into her mouth and smiled at Shen Mochen.
Shen Mochen looked down, "Why do you keep staring at me?"
"Because the movie's boring."
"It was your choice to watch it."
"But I didn't expect it to be this boring!"
"Then keep watching me. I'm certainly better looking than the movie."
Yin Caiyu covered her mouth, giggling, then gently punched his shoulder while whispering, "You're so shameless!"
The movie was indeed boring, depicting a clichéd love story where the female lead dies in the end and the male lead is heartbroken, remaining unmarried for life.
After the movie ended, Shen Mochen and Yin Caiyu left the theater without any emotional fluctuation.
"I think that guy was really childish," Yin Caiyu walked down the cinema hallway, criticizing the terrible movie, "Refusing to marry for life is too much!"
"It's okay, I guess," said Shen Mochen.
"What's okay about that? I hate all this mushy lovey-dovey stuff. So what if the person you love dies? Just find someone else; it's not like there's no one else out there! What's the use of being sad for a lifetime? They won't come back to life. Are you just trying to move yourself?"
"You have a point there... huh?"
Shen Mochen, not feeling like arguing with Yin Caiyu, casually agreed but was suddenly distracted by a girl in front.
