Chapter 200: Secret
Shen Mochen and Xia Qingrou put on their walkie-talkies and, wearing bright headlights, headed to the garage behind the house.
"We'll take the motorbike!" Xia Qingrou said with a smile as she pushed out a motorbike and gestured for Shen Mochen to get on.
Shen Mochen hesitated for a moment but then climbed on.
"Hold on tight, okay!" Xia Qingrou revved the throttle, and the motorbike roared to life.
Shen Mochen held onto Xia Qingrou's waist as the motorbike shot off like an arrow released from its bow.
Today, when riding in Xia Qingrou's pickup truck, Shen Mochen thought she drove quite steadily. He hadn't expected her to be so wild on a motorbike; it didn't quite match her character.
Xia Qingrou fiercely twisted the throttle, racing along at breakneck speed.
The whooshing wind struck Shen Mochen's hands while he tightly embraced her waist.
"We're here." Xia Qingrou stopped at a certain place, got Shen Mochen off the bike, and took off her headlight, lightly shaking her hair.
"Do you like speeding, Sister Xia?" Shen Mochen asked, still a bit shaken after dismounting.
"Haha, sorry, sorry, did I scare you?" Find exclusive content at My Virtual Library Empire
"A little, it's unsafe to go so fast at night."
"No worries, I'm really good at driving!" Xia Qingrou said, laughing heartily as she patted Shen Mochen's shoulder.
Was this really a matter of driving skills? Shen Mochen thought of Catherine, who also liked to drive fast. Were the girls nowadays all so bold?
And both of these people drove without a license.
"That being said, safety comes first... Do you like to drive fast, Sister Xia?"
Xia Qingrou exhaled deeply, her eyes sparkling like stars: "Yeah, it feels amazing, like I'm about to fly. Especially when the wind rushes through my body, I feel like I merge with the wind, leaving everything behind!"
Shen Mochen was momentarily stunned, seeing the pale moonlight pouring over Xia Qingrou and creating an almost fairy-tale-like layer he did not wish to break.
Although there weren't always stars, the view was really beautiful right now. Shen Mochen looked at Xia Qingrou's face and thought to himself.
The reason Xia Qingrou hadn't sped while driving the pickup during the day must be because Han Muxue was also on board.
"Buque is like this, the old timers bring in the new. But actually, this is my first time mentoring a newbie too," Xia Qingrou said with a smile, looking at Shen Mochen. "But seeing how well you adapted during the day, I don't think there's much I could teach you anymore, so just walk around here and get familiar with the terrain."
"Familiarize myself with the terrain?"
"Yes, fighting at night is essentially the same as during the day, except that visibility is worse. Battling monsters on these wild mountain roads at night is very dangerous because of all the stumbling and fumbling, so I want you to get used to the terrain. This area has some of the worst road conditions in our network. I'll let you get accustomed to it tonight, and tomorrow I'll take you to familiarize yourself with other areas!"
Shen Mochen nodded. "So I just walk around?"
Xia Qingrou coughed. "Pretty much, but hopefully, you can roughly remember and get used to this place!"
"Are you going to join me?"
"I'll stay here and wait for you!" Xia Qingrou said earnestly, "A fledgling that doesn't leave its mother's embrace will never soar high. You need to toughen up on your own. It's for your own good, you know. Only this way can you grow into a true warrior!"
I think you're just lazy... Shen Mochen muttered to himself.
But he didn't complain. He checked the battery on the walkie-talkie, turned on his headlight, and began exploring nearby, adapting to the nighttime terrain.
With a moon casting spotty light and vast emptiness all around, the night was silent save for the distant chirping of insects.
This area was a desolate range of low hills overgrown with weeds. If Shen Mochen hadn't been wearing the combat boots and suit issued by Buque Official, he'd probably have his legs cut by the wild grass. But this was indeed something he had to get used to, as monsters wouldn't just pick human-friendly plains to make their appearance.
The road here was rather difficult to traverse, and occasionally one would come across fragments of monster corpses. It was said that the flesh of these monsters was not poisonous, but it was inedible due to its toughness and would lead to diarrhea if consumed.
Shen Mochen didn't bother to look more closely; just a moment of inattention had caused him to take a tumble, thankfully without injury.
The physical condition of most Buque members didn't differ much from normal people. If one were truly injured on the battlefield to the extent that it affected their mobility, it would be incredibly dangerous. Most casualties within the Buque Team occurred at night.
After groping around for about two hours, Shen Mochen glanced at the walkie-talkie. Xia Qingrou was still waiting in the same spot, having not urged him to hurry, just casually joking with him from time to time.
He felt it was about enough. Though he didn't have Su Mo's photographic memory, he himself was a top student, with excellent memory and learning summarization abilities. He felt he had gained quite a bit tonight, and as it was getting late, it was time to return.
He turned off his headlamp and didn't even look at the map on the walkie-talkie, relying on his memory to find the way back. He treated it as a sort of homework assignment for himself.
About fifteen minutes later, Shen Mochen returned to the original spot, but he saw only Xia Qingrou's motorcycle, not her.
He looked at the walkie-talkie, the map indicated that she was nearby. Shen Mochen looked around and heard some rustling noises coming from a small grove not far away.
Moving stealthily, Shen Mochen walked over to see what she was doing.
Xia Qingrou was holding a golden giant bow, drawing the bowstring back as a Light Arrow gradually emerged. She released the arrow, and upon hitting a leaf, the Light Arrow dissipated swiftly into the moonlight.
It seemed she was just practicing her aim, so the Light Arrow had no power; it merely caused the leaf to tremble slightly before drifting down lazily.
How long had she been practicing? An hour, two hours? She couldn't have started practicing archery the moment he left, could she?
Shen Mochen was greatly surprised in his heart. He had thought Xia Qingrou was lighthearted and free-spirited, but it turned out she was actually hard-working.
Therefore, Shen Mochen remained silent, watching quietly from behind for another five minutes. She was still shooting arrows earnestly, one after another.
"Xia Sister, I'm back." Shen Mochen walked over with a smile, "Were you practicing archery?"
Xia Qingrou jumped, startled by the sudden interruption. Turning her head to see it was Shen Mochen, the Light Bow disappeared. "You're back, let's go home then!"
She walked over to Shen Mochen, who noticed sweat beading at the tip of her nose and on her neck.
"Do you practice archery often?" Shen Mochen asked.
"I only started recently."
Xia Qingrou dismissed the idea with a wave of her hand. Shen Mochen could tell that her arms felt sore and limp, like noodles.
"Do your arms feel sore? Would you like me to help you recover?" Shen Mochen asked.
Xia Qingrou nodded with a radiant smile, "Thanks, husband~"
After using his superpower to heal Xia Qingrou's arms, Shen Mochen smiled, "Although your arms feel better now, you've been practicing for quite a while. I'll ride the bike back."
"Can you ride a motorcycle?"
"Well, I can ride an electric scooter."
"Motorcycles are much heavier than electric scooters!" Xia Qingrou laughed, though she didn't refuse.
Shen Mochen straddled the motorcycle with Xia Qingrou taking a seat behind him, her hand gently resting on his waist.
"This isn't very safe... you can hold on tighter," Shen Mochen said.
Xia Qingrou paused for a moment, then hugged Shen Mochen's waist tightly, pressing her body against his.
"I was just worried you'd be shy!" Xia Qingrou said playfully, close to Shen Mochen's ear, "Let's go home, and don't tell anyone I was slacking off and didn't train you."
A faint sweat seeped out, carrying a strong sweet scent of citrus, reminiscent of midsummer, stirring the senses irresistibly.
