Chapter 24: Personally Raising the Flag
"Oh, you're awake. So? Do you feel anything different?"
"...No. If there's something I can take note of, it's just that I can feel some of the memories from a couple of years ago becoming blurry. Besides that? I'm not so sure..."
"Is that so? Well, that's alright. You are a new Resonator after all. You'll need to get used to it anyways. I think I can bring you over to get an evaluation on Huanglong... Though, it'd certainly be easier if we just do it here."
"Evaluation?"
Katsuri had just came out of the restroom when she spotted a redhead, who upon noticing her, immediately initiated a conversation.
And now, another topic she's never heard about.
"Yes. Most, if not all, Resonators are required to go through an evaluation. This is not only important to keep the Resonators from committing crimes, but it'd also keep them safe with useful information."
Fortunately, Danjin was patient enough to explain everything one by one to her.
"Do you have any idea on what kind of frequency you've resonated with?"
Danjin invited Katsuri to sit down, in which Katsuri obliged, taking a seat across the redhead.
"No. I didn't even know I've resonated with anything until just now."
"That's fine. I guess we can do some experiments while we wait for the Carnevale to start."
Then, as if remembering something, Danjin exclaimed, "Ah, you don't have any experience fighting, right? Are you alright with smaller types of Tacet Discords?"
Katsuri's squints her eyes.
Her mind moved back to what had happened in her 'dreams', or so what she had called those.
She could vividly remember everything that had happened in there, as if it had also happened in real life.
The pain? All felt.
In fact, her head still felt like it hurts from the amount of time her brain had crashed against her skull inside that dream.
Didn't Wuthering Waves have a term for something like this?
What was it...?
So... So...
Nope, can't remember.
"I can run away from them just fine."
"That's good. We can start now if you want. Or do you need more rest? You did sleep for 4 days after all."
"I would like to rest then... Wait. What did you say? I've been asleep for how many days!?"
Becoming worked up, Katsuri stood up. Although, the height differences made it so that even as she was standing on two her two feet, her eyes barely became the same level as Danjin's, who was still sitting down.
"Yes. Although it was to be expected as there have been cases of other Resonators being asleep for a week as they awakened. Don't worry, it shouldn't have any adverse effect on your body."
"Even when you put it that way..."
It was still 4 days.
That's like... 24 times 4... 48, 72.... Uh, 96?
Having dropped out of middle school, she had missed out on a lot of things. But the one thing she still remembered...
Mental math is hard.
And 96 hours...
Quite a lot of things could've been done in that time span!
Like... Farming for Astrites...
Ok, maybe not much could've been done.
Seemingly not bothered, Danjin stood up as she lent a hand towards Katsuri.
"Come on, let's go explore Rinascita together. We can start experimenting with your Forte too."
Looking at the hand for a couple of seconds, a memory overlapped.
But it was only in an instant as she returned back to reality.
Without hesitation, she grabbed the extended hand.
[Wuthering Waves]
"Alright. First things first, we need to figure out what kind of abilities you've resonated with. It seemed to me that you had awakened not too long ago. Can you tell me what had happened recently?"
Danjin was still smiling softly even as she moved swiftly, gliding across the lands with ease.
Meanwhile, Katsuri was sulking.
It can't be helped.
After all...
She was being carried.
Since she can't run that fast, it was consensus that she would use Danjin as a form of transportation if they needed to get to a location quickly.
But that's not what she was lamenting.
It was the way she's being carried.
Earlier, after they had reached the conclusion of using Danjin as a form of transportation, they had to also decide how to use her as a form of transportation.
Naturally, Danjin brought up the fact that she's strong enough to carry around Katsuri across Huanglong multiple times without feeling tired.
Danjin's first choice was a princess carry.
Katsuri immediately rejected the idea.
She doesn't like having such close proximity with someone.
Although it could be argued that being carried alone was already a close contact, having their face practically next to each other still made her feel uncomfortable.
Next was a piggy back ride.
Of course, rejected for the same reason. But it does feel less uncomfortable since Danjin wasn't facing her.
Seeing the way Katsuri was against the idea of a normal carry, Danjin settled for something else.
And in the end, that's what the ended up with.
She was being carried over the shoulder, like a sack of potato.
She was looking at the back, meanwhile her butt was raised facing the front.
A very humiliating position.
And she can't even be mad about it. After all, who told her to be so picky?
She practically ripped what she sowed.
"Hah..."
"Ah, sorry. Was it a bad memory? You don't have to recall them, it's fine." Danjin panicked a little hearing the smaller girl sigh.
She had almost forgotten Katsuri had most probably lost some of her memory as a side effect of a coping mechanism of having her home raided by exiles. (Her own speculation)
"Uh, no. What was your question?" She genuinely forgot what Danjin had asked. She was too deep into her own thoughts to recognize what had been said.
"It's nothing. We can just start experimenting without them. Although it'll take a bit more time, it's not going to last that long."
Finally, the reached the small house. Katsuri had thought that the house seemed a bit too familiar...
"Alright, we can use this place as a base for now. I've already scanned the surroundings a couple of times, it should be pretty safe."
Fortunately, Danjin immediately put her down, tiny specks of red glazed Katsuri's ears.
"So, what should I do first?"
"Hm... Good question. Since we have no lead on your resonated frequency, should we just try out random things first?"
"What random thing?"
"Here, take up your sword first."
"...?"
Ah, right. Didn't this bastard turned into a gauntlet the other day?
Could it be that it changes appearance every day?
Was that why...?
She grabbed the handle of the sword that was longer than she was tall.
Almost immediately after Danjin let go, she fell.
No, it was more so that the sword had brought her down to her knee.
She was barely holding on as the sword was barely lifting off the ground.
Danjin immediately bent down and grabbed the handle, making Katsuri let out a sigh of relief.
'Why was it so heavy? In the 'dream', it was so light...'
"Um... That was, unexpected?"
"..."
Even Danjin doesn't know how to react in this situation.
Katsuri just stayed quiet.
"That's alright. Have faith in yourself! Everything would work out."
Katsuri tightened her grip.
"...Yes, you're right."
Hopefully nothing goes wrong.
...That was a flag, wasn't it?
