Chapter 43: The Day Of Reckoning (Chapter 41)
The morning sun rose quietly over Hano Medical University, casting long shadows across the courtyard. It looked peaceful, almost serene, but Shin knew better. Beneath the calm, the world was still on edge. Izanami had Code Number 8, and every decision they made now mattered.
Shin entered the secure boardroom where everyone had already gathered: Riku, Reito, Akane, President Momo, President Serena, and Director Sayuri. Yuna stood at the table with a tablet in hand.
Sayuri got straight to the point. "Izanami has officially awakened Code Number 8. They're parading him as their new symbol, calling him the hope for men and painting themselves as saviors."
Akane folded her arms. "If they win the public over, everything we've worked for could crumble."
Riku frowned. "So the Unity Conference might not matter?"
Reito shook his head. "No, it matters more than ever. People care about results, not symbols. If we show them the cure is real and working, Izanami's message will weaken."
Sayuri nodded. "Exactly. The conference moves up. We push hard now. Today we show the world the cure is real."
Yuna added, "The prototype is stable enough for live demonstrations. If we vaccinate healthcare workers in front of the media, it will shift public trust."
Shin leaned forward. "Then we do it. Science, not symbols."
The campus turned into a hive of activity. Medical teams set up inoculation stations, journalists and cameras poured in, and guards tightened security around every corner.
Shin walked through the setup with Yuna, checking everything. Reito handled statements for social media while Riku and Serena personally briefed regional delegates, assuring them that doses were ready for distribution.
"Everything is on track," Akane said, meeting Shin by the main tent. "Stay focused, and don't let reporters bait you with questions about Code 8."
Shin nodded. "They'll ask anyway, but we give them the same answer: we're saving lives."
When the event started, the courtyard was full of reporters, medical staff, and regional leaders. Cameras flashed as Yuna stood at the podium.
"The MK Virus can be controlled," she said confidently, presenting the data. "Our prototype has shown an 85% suppression rate, and today we start with real people."
Shin administered the first shot to a volunteer paramedic. The crowd clapped as Reito followed up with a short speech: "This is hope. Not politics, not war. Just hope."
Footage of the event streamed live across the internet. Comments began flooding in—people cheering, others asking how soon they could get the vaccine. Izanami's propaganda videos were still circulating, but the cure was stealing attention fast.
Later that evening, everyone gathered in the lounge to watch Izanami's live ceremony. Code Number 8 stood in front of their flag, calm and composed, saying little but nodding as their leader declared him the "future of male liberation."
The room stayed quiet as the broadcast ended.
"They're turning him into a symbol," Riku muttered.
Sayuri crossed her arms. "And we're turning the cure into a solution. That's the difference."
Akane nodded. "Public opinion is already shifting toward us. We need to keep this momentum."
By nightfall, the tension eased slightly. Shin took a walk around the quiet courtyard, the lanterns glowing softly. Yuna joined him, handing him a cup of tea.
"We did well today," she said softly.
"We did," Shin replied, though his eyes stayed fixed on the sky. "But tomorrow's the real test. The conference has to work."
Yuna smiled, touching his arm. "It will. We'll make it work."
Shin looked at her and gave a small nod. For the first time in a while, he felt like they might actually win this.
Still, as he headed back to his room, he couldn't shake the thought of Code Number 8 and what Izanami might do with him next.
Tomorrow could change everything.
