World's End Harem: The Lustful Messiah

Chapter 40: Setting The Atmosphere (Chapter 38)

The morning after their return to Hano Medical University dawned without incident.

The skies were clear, birds chirped in the nearby courtyard trees, and the air had that soft warmth only early spring could bring. It was the perfect illusion of peace. However, the situation couldn't have been further from it. Underneath the nice looking facade, was a world of conflict.

Shin woke up surrounded by Doctor Yuna, Rei, and Misaki.

They got up from the bed and started getting ready for the day.

Director Sayuri called for an important meeting. They had to figure out where to go from here.

Inside the university's high-security boardroom, the lights were dimmed and the atmosphere heavy. Shin sat near the head of the polished obsidian table. Across from him were Riku, Reito, Akane, President Momo, and Director Sayuri who was flanked by a number of guards.

"Let's begin," Director Sayuri said firmly.

A sharp tone echoed through the room as the main monitor switched to a satellite feed. Surveillance images displayed a shadowed coastline on the western edge of Japan. Blurred outlines of ships, disguised landing craft, and what looked like temporary barracks being erected in a desolate coastal zone.

"This," Sayuri said, "is not a coincidence."

She pointed to a highlighted sector flashing red on the map. "These are World Headquarters logistics units under false humanitarian flags. They've begun setting up infrastructure along this coast to keep a better eye on us."

Reito narrowed his eyes. "What for?"

Akane answered before Sayuri could. "They're building a mobile forward operating base. These installations are not for supply runs. They're launch platforms. We believe they're planning a mass operation."

"To do what?" Shin asked, voice even. "Seize a city?"

"No," Sayuri replied. "They're preparing to invade Hano, but quietly. Not in one day, not all at once, but through influence. Diplomats. Informants. They'll try to send people here, gather information, and somehow use that against us. They might try to stir up drama."

President Momo leaned forward, fingers steepled. "They'll do it under the guise of 'unification,' claiming that the Japanese UW Branch is mismanaging resources and Code Number security. World Headquarters know they can't just march in here through brute force because the public would be very much against that."

Riku sat up straighter. "In other words, they want to replace the board."

Director Sayuri nodded grimly. "Exactly. And if they do, they'll take control of you both of you." she said, looking at Shin and Riku, "under the pretext of protection."

"And if we resist," Shin said coldly, "we'll be painted as traitors."

A beat of silence.

Reito crossed his arms. "What about the cure?"

"Not safe to release it yet," Yuna's voice chimed in through the monitor. "We need more time. The prototype's stable, but the transmission method we plan to use could fail if sabotaged. And World Headquarters now has satellite listening coverage outside over all our key facilities."

Akane swore under her breath.

Momo added, "If they move their political pieces into play first, they could cut off public support before we even reach the finish line."

Reito looked at Sayuri. "What's the counter?"

Sayuri took a slow breath. "We strike politically before they do. Before their infiltrators can get deep enough."

"How?" Riku asked.

Sayuri tapped the tablet before her. "By uniting the independent Japanese provinces still friendly to our branch. By holding a formal declaration of resistance. A conference of unity of sorts and gather their public support."

Akane's eyes widened. "That's... bold."

"They won't be able to move on Hano publicly if it becomes a diplomatic center of allied UW regions," Sayuri explained. "And it'll force World HQ's hand. Either they negotiate, or they attack, and make themselves the villains on the world stage."

"But it also puts a target on our backs," Rei said from the side, her voice quiet but steady. "Especially on Shin and Riku."

"They've already painted targets," Shin replied. "This just makes them visible."

Momo stood. "We'll need to reach out today. Quietly. No broadcast. Personal envoys, encrypted messages. And no leaks."

Akane added, "And we'll need eyes and ears. I'll mobilize our recon squads. If any HQ agents move into the city, we intercept."

The group nodded in agreement.

Director Sayuri turned toward Shin and Riku. "Until this is resolved, I want both of you assigned full-time bodyguard rotations. And limit public appearances. We can't risk World Headquarters staging another failed assassination and using it as justification for military 'peacekeeping.'"

Shin stood slowly. "Understood."

Before the meeting adjourned, Yuna added one final point. "One more thing. A few hours ago, we intercepted a message on one of the compromised UW channels. It was coded, but we decrypted the final phrase."

On screen, the phrase appeared in blood-red text:

"Phase Two has begun. Code Number 8 awakens soon."

Everyone froze.

Reito's expression darkened. "Code Number 8… was still in cryo when Izanami took him."

Shin's jaw clenched. "If they're bringing him out of cryo, it's either to convert him to their cause… or kill him."

"We don't even know what kind of person he is yet," Riku muttered.

Akane's voice dropped to a whisper. "Or what abilities he may have."

Director Sayuri nodded slowly, tapping her fingers on the table. "This changes the timeline. We proceed with the Unity Conference immediately. No delay. And we prepare... for a public battle. We have to prepare for any moves Inazumi makes as well."

Silence fell over the room once more.

The lines were being drawn.

The final stages of the MK Virus war were beginning.

Not with gunfire, but with politics, deception, and strategy.

And when the moment came… it would explode.
