Chapter 5: The stranger
Jake didn't know what to do. His arm was now entirely covered in a thick layer of tungsten, impossibly heavy and almost painfully rigid. He needed help, but who could he turn to? His mind raced with all the possible consequences of what had just happened.
Just then, a voice broke through his thoughts.
"You found it, didn't you?"
Jake spun around. Standing a few feet away from him was a girl he had never seen before. She was wearing a faded hoodie with a logo he didn't recognize—something like a shield with a crescent moon. Her hair was pulled into a messy ponytail, and she wore a smirk on her face as if this wasn't the most ridiculous thing in the world.
"Who—who are you?" Jake asked, his voice betraying a mix of confusion and fear.
The girl raised an eyebrow, her smirk turning into a full grin. "A friend. Well, not really. More like... someone who's been tracking that serum for a while."
Jake's mind was racing. Tracking? The serum? What was she talking about?
"Are you... like a villain?" Jake asked, stepping back, feeling the weight of his new arm as he tried to make some sense of the situation.
The girl laughed. "Villain? No, not at all. But you might not want to hang around for the bad guys to show up."
Jake's heart skipped a beat. "Bad guys?"
The girl nodded, glancing around as if expecting someone to pop out of the shadows. "Yeah. The serum you're holding? It's from an old villain who's been off the radar for a while—Rex Steel. And he's not the only one interested in it."
Jake's mind was spinning. Rex Steel. He had heard of the name in hushed tones. An infamous villain whose powers revolved around controlling metal, turning it into weapons or armor. But that was years ago. No one had heard anything from him since his disappearance.
"So, what does this all mean?" Jake asked, his voice quieter now. "What do I do with this... this arm?"
The girl's eyes softened, and for a moment, she seemed almost human, not just some mysterious figure. "It means you've got yourself into something bigger than you realize, Jake. And I don't think you're ready for what's coming next."
