Wizard Lord:I can Extract Anything

Chapter 127: Chapter 127: The Mushroom Field

The Mushroom Field holds a significant place in the culture of the Black Crystal Insectoids. According to legend, before the Mother Insect God descended upon this world, it was entirely dominated by mushrooms. After the Mother Insect God arrived, she fed on mushrooms, and the mother insects and Black Crystal Insectoids she later birthed also consumed them. This angered the Mother of All Mushrooms—the Primal Mushroom, which led to a great battle between the Primal Mushroom and the Mother Insect God, ending in the Primal Mushroom's defeat. Fragments of the Primal Mushroom fell to the ground, forming patches of Mushroom Fields. These fields carry the Primal Mushroom's resentment, requiring any flesh-and-blood creatures passing through to offer blood and flesh to appease the field's nature spirit.

After listening to the warrior insect's recounting of the Black Crystal Insectoids' myth, Richard pondered deeply.

Myths hold significant cultural value for a race, serving as a form of historical record. From the warrior insect's story, it seemed that in ancient times, the Mother Insect God wasn't yet the world lord. She became one after battling a massive fungal entity, which was a major development for a micro-world.

Wizards categorize planes into four types, the largest being a large world like the Wizard World, which remains unexplored. According to Ulysses, these worlds are civilization seeds; with a level-seven life form reaching for the stars, a new civilization emerges in the astral realm.

Next are medium worlds, often home to multiple world lords and at least one level-six creature. Such worlds can't be conquered by a single wizard academy, requiring joint expeditions led by a Tower of Truth and multiple academies. These planar expeditions are brutal but yield rich rewards, with many grand wizards rising to prominence through such wars.

Then come small worlds, which might have multiple world lords with power reaching level five. For safety, two wizard academies typically conquer these worlds together.

Finally, there's micro-worlds like the Hive World, featuring a single world lord of level four. Such worlds are the most common in the astral realm and can be conquered by a single wizard academy.

According to the Black Crystal Insectoids' legend, the Hive World might not fit its micro-world designation. Worlds can grow by absorbing drifting world fragments, secret realm fragments, astral creatures, or astral dust.

Richard dismissed his speculation, knowing that planar war experts likely noticed this issue long before him. If the Grand Wizard of Black Tower hadn't ordered a retreat, it meant there was no problem.

Moreover, if the Hive World was on the verge of upgrading, it would produce many valuable items. Securing even a few would make Richard's participation in the war worthwhile.

With the warrior insect stored in his slave pouch, Richard and Ellie set off, following the tracks left by the Black Crystal Insectoids toward the Mushroom Field.

Along the way, Richard noticed changes in the surrounding fungi and a rapid increase in airborne spores, reaching an alarming level, with many being toxic.

Fortunately, Richard's robust physique prevented him from succumbing to the spores. This situation highlighted the benefits of bloodline fusion.

Ellie's elemental bloodline, from a high-level source, provided significant elemental resistance. The toxic spores entering her body were incinerated by her fiery elements before causing harm.

Following the trail, Richard and Ellie soon reached the edge of the Mushroom Field.

True to its name, the field was filled with mushrooms. The vast area was crowded with towering luminescent fungi and various mushrooms. Unlike the cave mushrooms, the ones in the field gave Richard an unsettling feeling.

These mushrooms exuded a predatory aura, akin to some kind of hunter.

The Mushroom Field was unlike any cave Richard had seen, resembling a vast underground forest—deep and teeming with life.

"Caw, seems the insect wasn't lying," Ulysses communicated telepathically from Richard's shoulder.

Richard maintained his composure. "What do you mean? What did you notice?"

"Caw, didn't you see the spatial anomaly here?" Ulysses explained. "How could such a vast space exist so deep underground? Even if they hollowed out the hive, the remaining weight should collapse it."

"This space exists because of the spatial anomaly caused by a divine corpse. Entering here is like stepping into another space."

Ulysses' explanation made Richard realize the truth of the situation.

The bizarre landscapes of other worlds had numbed Richard's senses, leading him to attribute everything unusual to otherworldly rules.

"According to you, isn't entering here dangerous?"

"Caw, dangerous? How so?" Ulysses asked, confused.

"Isn't this a different space? And it's caused by a dead divine being's corpse. Wouldn't the world's rules change inside?"

"Caw, nonsense. This place isn't another world. It's like different pages of the same book. Entering it keeps you within this book—this world. At most, you'll encounter some incomplete rules, which pose no threat. You might meet creatures with remnants of divine rules, but I can handle them... for a price, of course."

Richard's mouth twitched, sensing Ulysses was overpromising.

"As tradition dictates, we must offer a blood sacrifice to the Mushroom Field's nature spirit for passage."

Richard pulled a Spider Knight from his slave pouch and tossed it into the field. Instantly, Richard felt the gaze of a predator fix on him, as if a powerful hunter was watching.

But the sensation quickly faded.

Thrown into the field, the Spider Knight was terrified. As a denizen of the underground hive, it knew the Mushroom Field's rules and methods all too well.

It struggled desperately, but soon found white tendrils sprouting from its body.

The tendrils emerged from the ground, snaking through the cracks in its carapace toward its flesh.

Richard couldn't see what the tendrils did, but the Spider Knight's screams indicated immense pain.

Soon, the Spider Knight's cries ceased.

The tendrils spread within its body, replacing its flesh and nerves.

Then, a new Spider Knight was born.

It glanced at Richard, then silently walked deeper into the field. Richard sensed no abnormality from it, as if it had merged with the Mushroom Field.

"What a strange transformation," Ellie remarked, frowning. "The fungi hollowed it out and made it a puppet."

"Not necessarily a puppet," Richard countered. "It might be a new form of life."

Having made the blood sacrifice, Richard and Ellie received their entry pass to the Mushroom Field. According to the warrior insect, as long as they didn't cause significant destruction, they would be safe.

Just as they were about to enter, they both turned simultaneously, staffs ready, sensing a presence behind them.

"Relax, we're on the same side."

From the tunnel wall behind Richard emerged two earth-colored figures, resembling elemental creatures.

The figures stepped out of the wall, transforming into terracotta-like puppets. One of them moved and greeted Richard and Ellie with a wizard salute.

"No need to worry, we're wizards too. We're prohibited from fighting among ourselves."

Despite the reassurance, Richard didn't lower his staff.

As a black wizard, encountering two wizards appearing behind him, he was already showing restraint by not launching an attack.

"Are you here to hunt insects?" Richard asked coldly.

The puppet wizard's face shifted slightly, speaking cautiously, "Of course, we're here to hunt insects. Isn't that why we came?"

Richard inwardly scoffed. The warrior insect mentioned a priest insect speaking of two groups of monsters pursuing them. Initially, Richard thought it was just him and Ellie, but now it seemed these two wizards were the other group.

"Is that so? Then I must have misunderstood. We were chasing a group of insects into this Mushroom Field, so we won't delay you further."

Richard signaled Ellie with a glance, preparing to enter the field.

Before they could take a step, the puppet wizard spoke again.

"You saw a group of insects enter the Mushroom Field? Was there an injured priest insect among them?"

"Priest insect?" Richard feigned ignorance. "We haven't seen them yet. We only killed a few injured ones along the way and followed the trail here."

"Injured insects..."

The puppet wizard's thoughts churned. Their tracking markers led them here, and these two were also following a group of insects.

The coincidence was too significant to ignore, suggesting they were after the same insects. Moreover, these two seemed unaware of what the insects carried...

The puppet wizard quickly formed a plan.

"It seems we're chasing the same insects," the puppet wizard said. "These insects are not to be underestimated. Among them is an injured second-tier insect."

"Second-tier insect?!" Richard and Ellie feigned surprise, their synchronized reactions natural enough to avoid arousing suspicion.

"Yes, there's an injured second-tier insect among them," the puppet wizard continued. "It killed a second-circle wizard in the upper hive and escaped."

"Impressive. And you're still pursuing it?" Richard asked, feigning curiosity.

"The insect is severely injured. We're confident we can escape if necessary, so we followed," the puppet wizard replied, then shifted the conversation.

"But with four wizards working together, capturing these insects should be a breeze."
