Chapter 54: Chapter 54: Flight
Assassin Alliance - Reception Room.
As Phil Coulson entered, Smith Dole calmly watched him, already suspecting that S.H.I.E.L.D.—or rather Hydra within S.H.I.E.L.D.—had finally taken notice. Whether it was due to the war with the High Table or the Dragon Balls, he couldn't tell. Hopefully, the wish made to Shenron in international waters had gone unnoticed.
Coulson sat across from Smith and introduced himself:
"Mr. Smith Dole, I'm Agent Phil Coulson of the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division."
Smith quirked an eyebrow.
"I thought you were with the FBI? Switched departments, have we?"
Coulson smiled.
"Our agency isn't widely known, so we sometimes borrow the identity of more recognizable organizations."
Smith wasn't surprised.
"So, Agent of... what was that mouthful again?"
"Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division," Coulson repeated.
Smith smirked.
"Don't you think that name is a bit... long?"
"Agreed," Coulson chuckled. "I'll be sure to recommend a shorter version to the Director."
"In any case, allow me to formally introduce our organization. We operate under the authority of the UN Security Council and handle unusual incidents."
Smith remained silent, letting him continue.
"Based on our observations, Mr. Dole, your power clearly exceeds human norms. Tell me—is the Assassin Alliance experimenting with Super Soldier Serum?"
Smith was momentarily surprised. His recent feats did resemble a supercharged version of Captain America's enhancements.
He shook his head.
"We haven't developed any Super Soldier Serum."
Coulson studied his expression and believed he was telling the truth. That was disappointing.
If the Alliance had truly created a safe version of the serum, S.H.I.E.L.D. would've jumped at the chance to acquire it—through purchase, espionage, or brute force.
"If it's not serum," Coulson said, "then you're a natural mutation. That puts you under our watch."
Smith raised an eyebrow.
"You planning to dissect me in a lab?"
Coulson laughed.
"You're making us sound like villains from a movie. Our mission is to safeguard peace and deal with the supernatural. After all, most people in this world are just... people."
Smith nodded slightly.
"My visit today," Coulson continued, "is partly to establish contact. But also to inform you—you're not the only special individual in the world."
Smith frowned. Was that it? No threats, no demands?
"That's all?"
Coulson smiled.
"More or less. Just keep your abilities hidden from the public. We don't want mass panic. As for the Assassin Alliance... your operations are technically illegal, but outside our jurisdiction."
"However, against truly dangerous individuals, we may need your assistance."
Seeing Coulson's calm tone, Smith chose not to react harshly.
"The Alliance has its own protocols for handling evil," Smith replied. "If you can't deal with someone, I probably can't either."
He wasn't interested in doing S.H.I.E.L.D.'s dirty work, nor would the Alliance become their pawn.
Unfazed by the refusal, Coulson slid a card onto the table.
"This world is far more complex than you think. I'm sure we'll meet again."
He stood and left.
Smith stared at the card, thinking over Coulson's real motives.
He knew there were others with special abilities—he probably understood this world better than S.H.I.E.L.D. did. Their metahuman database was sizable, but their attitude was oddly mild. It reminded him of that pyrokinetic man they'd monitored and warned against using his powers publicly.
Coulson's request was similar—he wanted Smith to remain discreet and hinted at using his power without offering anything in return.
Smith wasn't sure of their full intentions, but as long as he stayed passive, he'd be fine. S.H.I.E.L.D.'s current power wasn't enough to threaten him. The only unknowns were energy weapons like the Tesseract laser, or Captain Marvel—whom he definitely couldn't beat yet.
Pocketing the card, Smith made his way to Training Field No. 2.
He wanted to try flight.
Young Gokū at this stage hadn't learned Bukūjutsu (Sky Dancing Technique), which he acquired after defeating Piccolo Daimaō at Kami's Temple. Smith didn't have the Kintoun (Flying Nimbus) either.
Still, he wasn't worried. His battle power far exceeded Videl's, who learned to fly under Gohan. With ki awareness, it should be possible.
In the training field, he focused on his energy and recalled the anime scene of Gohan teaching Videl.
He circulated ki outside his body. After a few failed attempts, he began to float. With more control, he soon zipped around the field effortlessly.
"Haha! As expected of my talent—this was easy."
Excited by his success, he longed to test his full-speed flight. But the training field was too small. The ocean would be better.
Without wasting time, he summoned John Wick to pilot a yacht to open waters near international seas.
