Chapter 30: Chapter 30: Battle Against the Skaven
"Boom!!!" Duanmu Huai descended from the sky, landing heavily on the ground and directly crushing several unlucky Skaven beneath him. However, he paid no attention to such minor details. The next moment, Skaven from all directions swarmed toward him, charging madly. At the same time, countless puppets once again rained down from above, pouncing on the Skaven army.
Duanmu Huai didn't expect these puppets to wipe out the entire Skaven force. Although he could summon them without limit, their attack power was too low. This time, it was a joint operation with the dwarves, and he couldn't very well bring out the [Ghost Mansion]—after all, necromancy was still considered taboo by most races. They were just passing through, and it was better to avoid unnecessary trouble. Besides, they were just Skaven. It wasn't his first time fighting them!
"Thump!!" Duanmu Huai raised his warhammer high and smashed it forward. Lightning burst forth, engulfing the Skaven before him and instantly charring a large number of rat-men. Seizing the chaos caused by the puppet legion's impact, he strode forward and charged straight into the heart of their forces!
This time, there were no corrupted cultists around, so Duanmu Huai didn't have to worry about catching any viruses!
"Kill—————!!!" Just as the Skaven panicked under Duanmu Huai's assault, Brock led the dwarves into a charge of their own—like an iron hammer crashing into the disorganized Skaven ranks. When the Skaven finally noticed the dwarves and scrambled to defend, it was already too late. The fierce dwarves had arrived, roaring as they raised their axes, ready to chop these burrowing bastards into meat paste.
Dwarves and Skaven were ancient enemies. On one hand, Skaven belonged to the Chaos faction, naturally opposed to the orderly dwarves. On the other hand, both sides favored digging vast tunnel networks underground. Colleagues were enemies, after all—you can't sleep peacefully if someone's snoring beside your bed. Now that they'd encountered each other, killing was inevitable!
Soon, the dwarf troops rushed into the Skaven camp and began fighting in close quarters. Dwarf warriors in heavy armor, wielding battle axes and shields, charged at the front lines. Behind them followed Thunderers and artillerymen with firearms and cannons—after all, dwarves were one of the most technologically advanced races on this planet.
They could even build mechanical gear like helicopters, so firearms posed no difficulty for them. However, their opponents weren't primitives either—Skaven technology was equally astonishing.
"Tat-tat-tat-tat-tat!!!!" The Skaven's steam-powered Gatling guns spun wildly, spewing a storm of bullets at the dwarves, trying to halt their advance. At the same time, Death Runners, cloaked and wielding twin blades, darted through the shadows of the ruins like ghosts, attempting to bypass the front lines and strike directly at the rear—targeting the dwarf gunners and artillerymen who were pouring out suppressive fire.
For a time, both sides were locked in a chaotic melee. And at the front, Duanmu Huai also encountered his opponent.
"Roar—————!!" A towering Rat Ogre spread its arms and lunged at Duanmu Huai. Its physique resembled that of a muscular, inverted-triangle-shaped rat-man bodybuilder, but it was even larger—almost matching Duanmu Huai in his power armor. Wielding a meteor hammer, it charged in and clashed with him head-on.
Of course, a single Rat Ogre wouldn't even warrant Duanmu Huai's attention—as long as it was alone. A whole group, however, was a different story. Just like now.
"Hah!!" Duanmu Huai blocked the Rat Ogre's blow, then slammed his hammer down, smashing it into the ground. But before he could catch his breath, another Rat Ogre had already pounced. Facing its sudden attack, Duanmu Huai turned and dodged without hesitation, stepping back as he stomped down on the skull of the first Rat Ogre, crushing it like a melon.
"Hiss, hiss, hiss———!!" Just then, a Skaven wielding a flamethrower crept up behind Duanmu Huai and pulled the trigger. "Whoosh—————!!!" A torrent of green fire surged from the weapon, instantly engulfing both Duanmu Huai and the fallen Rat Ogre.
The Skaven squealed excitedly, aiming the flamethrower with wild glee, spewing flames without pause—until a massive steel hand emerged from the blaze and clamped down on its head. "Squeak!!" Before the Skaven could even react, Duanmu Huai's fingers clenched, crushing its skull in an instant.
Then, with his left hand, he flung the charred corpse of the Rat Ogre—its neck still clenched in his grip—to the side. "Rumble, rumble, rumble!!!" But the Skaven's assault didn't end there. Just as Duanmu Huai tossed the body away, a massive mechanical construct roared toward him from the front.
It looked like a giant yo-yo made of scrap metal, its central gap filled with rapidly spinning chainsaws, eager to shred anything in their path. This was the Skaven's infamous war machine—the Doomwheel.
"Hmph." Seeing the monstrosity, Duanmu Huai snorted coldly. He stepped forward, red flames once again flaring across his armor. Then, gripping his warhammer, he brought it crashing down onto the side of the Doomwheel with immense force!
"Thump!!" The Thunder Warhammer slammed directly into the armored plating on the side of the yo-yo, instantly sending the Skaven's proud war machine flying. The massive contraption spun through the air, then crashed into the Skaven ranks and exploded, instantly becoming a burning heap of scrap metal.
With Duanmu Huai's charge, the battlefield was nearly under full control of the dwarves. Although the Skaven relied on their rapid reproduction and employed human wave tactics, against the dwarves' disciplined line, they were like seawater slamming against a stone dam—unable to make the slightest dent.
However, it wasn't all smooth sailing. "Swish!!" Just as Duanmu Huai swung his warhammer again, turning a group of rats into pulp, a flash of cold light suddenly pierced the darkness. The next moment, Duanmu Huai felt several sharp blades flying toward him.
He hurriedly raised his warhammer to shield his chest, but the opponent's speed far exceeded his expectations. There was a faint clinking sound, and Duanmu Huai caught a glimpse of a shadow dashing past, landing atop the ruins not far away. It was a Skaven entirely wrapped in a cloak.
In its hands were two greenish blades, and even its tail held a dagger… What are you, Zoro? Playing with three swords now?
As Duanmu Huai muttered inwardly, the Skaven assassin flickered again and vanished from his sight. It moved so fast that he couldn't react—he only felt vibrations ripple across his armor. He watched the durability of his power armor drop on the system interface, but he still couldn't see the attacker.
Damn it, how annoying. I really hate these speedy types…
Duanmu Huai's Agility stat was only 4, and he despised dealing with these nimble, slippery enemies. But fortunately, he had come prepared. Olgis. Just as the Skaven assassin vanished once more and launched another assault, Duanmu Huai silently called out to Olgis, who had been lurking in the shadows.
Responding to his command, the puppet girl extended her right hand toward him. "Swish—————!!" At the same time, the Skaven assassin suddenly reappeared, rolling backward as if trying to avoid an unseen threat.
But the moment it emerged, Duanmu Huai had already turned around, raising his warhammer and slamming it down hard on the Skaven assassin! This was the moment he had been waiting for!!
"Bang!!!" This time, the Skaven assassin couldn't dodge. It was struck directly by Duanmu Huai's hammer. Yet this wasn't your average assassin. As the weapon hit, it instinctively raised all three blades—two in its hands, one on its tail—to block, using the force of the impact to propel itself backward and retreat.
Though it said nothing, just looking at its shifty, darting gaze, Duanmu Huai could practically hear it say: "Hahaha, you fell for it! This was my escape plan all along!" But unfortunately for it, that escape was a dead end.
Midair, the flying Skaven assassin didn't make it far. Its body suddenly cracked and tore apart as if sliced by invisible blades—its limbs and torso separating midair, collapsing into chunks of mangled flesh on the ground.
"Idiot." Looking down at the shredded corpse, Duanmu Huai snorted coldly. He had expected this. The assassin was fast and might not be easy to kill head-on, so he had already ordered Olgis to weave a puppet thread spiderweb around the area. Once the assassin ran into it, the result was inevitable—death.
Looks like this plan worked perfectly.
