Chapter 178: Chapter 178: Picking Flowers
Having someone to drink with for once, Devola naturally didn't want Aiden to leave so soon. At her signal, Popola brought out some food to serve as snacks.
It was some simple smoked meat, mostly wild boar and deer meat from around the camp.
Aiden picked up a piece of smoked deer meat and, imitating the Slavs he saw in short videos, first smelled it, then took a sip of wine, and finally took a big bite of the meat.
To be honest, the meat only had a smoky flavor, no salt or seasoning. After a few chews, it had a faint gamey taste. But it had its own unique charm, and Aiden actually enjoyed it quite a bit.
"Try it."
Aiden handed the half-eaten smoked meat to Yakor. Though the android girl with a cleanliness obsession wrinkled her nose in distaste, she still took a bite and then showed an even more disgusted expression.
"Tastes bad," Yakor said bluntly. "Not even one-tenth as good as your cooking."
The twin sisters looked at Aiden curiously. Popola even asked, "You can cook too?"
Although there were also androids in the camp who researched human recipes, most of them were support-type androids without much combat ability, and they didn't pay much attention to flavor, or rather, they didn't care about taste at all. Their food was barely edible, and compared to the cooking skills she and her sister learned from humans, the difference was huge.
"I can make some simple dishes," Aiden said politely. However, since the meals at home were usually handled by Robert, sometimes he had to cook himself to enjoy a little treat. Over time, the number of dishes he could make also increased.
But after Alice and Tifa arrived, the diet situation improved a lot, and his chances to cook decreased.
"That's already amazing," Popola said. "If there's a chance, we'd like to try your cooking too, if that's okay?"
Aiden smiled and said, "Of course you can. You're welcome anytime."
Seeing that he agreed, Devola followed her sister's words and said, "How about tonight then? We can bring our own ingredients, and also some alcohol. I saw you like drinking too. It's rare to have someone with the same hobby. Since there's nothing to do tonight, let's imitate humans and drink till we drop."
"I can't say I particularly like it, but if we're going to have a good drink, then I don't mind."
"Then it's settled," Devola said as she poured herself another glass and downed it in one gulp.
After two glasses of alcohol, even though she was an android, Devola felt a bit tipsy. That was because she and her sister were different from regular androids. As former managers of the replicas meant to store human souls, they were actually quite similar to human replicants, even more like "humans."
Having drunk two glasses, Devola still wanted more, but Popola didn't agree. She knew that once Devola drank too much, she would start spouting nonsense and doing outrageous things, though she was still better than Popola when drunk. Popola had once smashed up a bar when she got drunk.
After quietly complaining a bit about her sister not letting her drink, Devola still gave in. After all, with a guest around, she didn't want to lose control while drunk. Besides, it was still morning, the start of the day, and they were busy during the day.
Though she didn't drink more, the alcohol had kicked in, and Devola became more talkative. She rested her chin on one hand, squinting at Aiden and said, "Speaking of which, Aiden, and Yakor, we've known you two for so many days now, but still don't know what model you are. Don't tell me you're just ordinary androids. That's impossible. You can eat and drink, and know so much. You must be special."
Aiden hadn't decided how to respond yet when Yakor said, "Even if not ordinary, we're still just androids. But, I, just like you two, was also made during the human era."
These words made Aiden look at her, thinking to himself that his last guess was right. Her deep knowledge of humans could only mean she came from that era.
"What about you?" Devola looked at Aiden.
At this moment, Aiden still hadn't decided what to say. Maybe he could say he had amnesia, like he did when he first met A2?
But the twin sisters were different from the inexperienced A2. That excuse probably wouldn't work on them.
Yeah, the YoRHa models were definitely easier to fool.
Luckily, Yakor spoke for him, "As for him... honestly, it's still not convenient to reveal his identity. But I can tell you this, once his identity is exposed, you'll definitely be shocked."
Devola waved her hand indifferently and said, "Unless humans return to the surface, there's nothing that could shock us."
"Well, you never know," Yakor laughed, her eyes showing a hint of cunning.
She suddenly started looking forward to that day. The expressions of these familiar androids would definitely be interesting then.
The twin sisters didn't take Yakor's words too seriously. In fact, if they thought about it carefully, they'd probably realize something. An identity that even androids from the human era had to keep secret, such a person definitely couldn't be described as "simple." But one sister was tipsy, and the other was too busy thinking about what ingredients to prepare for tonight.
After all, they'd been at this camp for so long, and it was their first time visiting someone else's place as guests.
"By the way, do you eat fish?" Popola suddenly asked.
"I do, but they don't. They think picking bones is troublesome. Actually, they could just eat the bones too, since they're androids, iron stomachs." Aiden would occasionally buy some fish to eat, but aside from him, A2 and Yakor didn't really like fish, only drinking a bit of fish soup.
"That's such a shame. I think fish is delicious. People in the old world loved it. They said it was umami. You know what umami means, right? If not, I don't know how to explain it, it's just a word that makes you think of something tasty," Popola said.
"If you guys like it, I'll go buy some later. I know where to get it, on that street. There's an android there who sells fish every day." Aiden pointed in the direction he meant, it was also the way he and Yakor had come from.
"But the fish they sell usually isn't fresh. Most of it is already dead. I think it's better to catch it yourself."
"Do you have the tools?" Devola asked.
"No, but I can have Yakor make them." Aiden patted Yakor's shoulder. "Her hands are very skillful."
"No need to trouble her," Popola said. "Someone once ordered a few fishing rods from me and didn't take all of them. One was left behind. You can just use that."
"That doesn't feel right…" Aiden said modestly.
"No need to be so polite. You've helped us so many times. It's just a fishing rod," Devola said generously.
"Then thank you," Aiden had no choice but to nod.
After chatting with the twin sisters for a while, Aiden and Yakor took their leave.
Not because they had nothing more to say, but because the sisters, having rested, were going back to work, though their workload was much lighter now and didn't require heavy lifting.
Originally, Aiden had wanted to stay and help more, but for one, the sisters started talking about how guilty they'd feel receiving more help, and for another, Yakor began urging him.
With no other choice, Aiden left first.
Carrying the fishing rod and fish basket Popola gave him, Aiden and Yakor walked side by side out of the resistance camp.
As soon as they left, Yakor started talking more, with a slightly mocking tone. "My my, someone's full of compassion, can't bear to see other androids suffer, huh?"
"They really are pitiful." Aiden said earnestly, thinking of the twins' story.
"Not accepted by other androids, always wandering outside, doing only dirty and exhausting work…"
"Then why don't you just reveal your identity and show up as a savior? Pardon their crimes in the name of salvation. I bet they'd be eternally grateful, no, completely devoted to you. Then you could do anything you wanted to them. You know they're similar to human replicants used as vessels, might even have reproductive systems."
"Don't say weird stuff, Yakor… but, do they really have reproductive systems?" Aiden asked curiously.
"See? That's where your focus goes! Pervert!" Yakor gritted her teeth in anger.
"You brought it up first. I only asked," Aiden said, feeling a bit wronged.
"You could have talked about something else! You didn't have to answer that!" Yakor still looked annoyed.
Aiden said, "Alright, alright, I'll talk about something else."
But after a while, he still didn't say anything.
Yakor thought he was upset. She suddenly grabbed his hand and asked, "Come on, I was only joking. I wasn't mad at you. Don't be angry, okay?"
"I'm not angry. I was just thinking about something," Aiden said as he looked her up and down.
"What is it?" Yakor asked.
Aiden hesitated, then finally said it, "Do you and A2 have reproductive systems?"
Yakor, "…"
Taking a deep breath, Yakor's face turned red as she raised her box and smashed it toward Aiden, shouting, "Go die, you pervert! Humanity is beyond saving!"
After chasing and fighting for a while, the two finally stopped. By now, they'd entered an area with lush aquatic plants, and not far away was a forest.
Yakor smoothed out her messy hair, her red face still flushed and slightly cold. Then she pointed toward the forest and said, "There's a sea of flowers over there. A lot of flowers grow there. Don't know if someone planted them on purpose or if it's from the old era, but it's huge, with all kinds of flowers."
"So, you want to pick some flowers?" Aiden asked as he sniffed the air, he could indeed smell some fragrance, which lifted his mood.
"Pick a bit of everything. But I like roses more, so let's pick more roses," Yakor said, glancing at him.
"Alright." Aiden nodded.
The two walked toward the flower field. As they went deeper, the floral scent thickened. Aiden even saw bees flying among the flowers. The vibrant scene made him smile.
Soon, they found a patch of multicolored roses. Yakor crouched down and carefully picked petals.
Aiden crouched too, but he was rougher, plucking entire flowers.
In no time, his small bag was full, while Yakor's bag barely had anything.
Bored, Aiden lay down on the ground to rest, inhaling the rose scent. But soon he sat up, thinking seriously. After a long while, he started picking flowers again, but this time, by the roots. Soon he held a big bunch.
After thinking for a moment, he split it into two bundles. One he carefully put into his large backpack, the other he tied with string to keep it together.
Then he walked behind Yakor and tapped her shoulder.
"What?" Yakor asked impatiently, still flustered and annoyed.
But then her expression changed, she looked a little panicked.
Aiden held out the roses and said, "These are for you. To apologize for what I said earlier."
"Just an apology?" Yakor's expression instantly returned to normal, but she still accepted the bouquet.
"Fine, I forgive you."
Holding the flowers in both hands, a subtle smile appeared on her face. She placed the flowers into her box, and when she looked up again, her face was back to normal.
Because the flowers blocked his view, Aiden didn't notice her expression change. Seeing her usual calm look, he mumbled to himself, "That didn't work?"
But he didn't dwell on it. After saying a few words to Yakor, he got up and walked deeper into the flower field. He'd seen bees earlier and wanted to check if he could find a hive, to get some honey.
He still remembered the twin sisters saying they wanted to make ice cream.
But even after walking far, he didn't find any hive, though he did find a river.
So Aiden again became interested, he took down the fishing rod that he carried with him, ran to the riverbank, but because the place he was at was probably upstream, the water flow was quite fast, so he went downstream, planning to find a place where the water flow was relatively calm to fish.
But he did not dare to walk too far, finally stopped at a place where the water flow was relatively steady.
