Chapter 10: Chapter 9: The Abyss Calls
The journey to the Revenants' hidden base is nothing like I expected. Kael leads the way, his expression hard and determined, as if he's already bracing for whatever's ahead. I can feel the tension between us, thickening with every step, the silence stretching longer than it ever has before. It's not the comfortable quiet we shared in the safe house, but a silence filled with unspoken fears, things we both know but haven't dared to say aloud.
The further we move from the city, the darker it gets. The streets grow emptier, the buildings more dilapidated, until it feels as though we've stepped into some forgotten corner of the world, a place where time itself has stalled. The air here is heavy with the scent of decay, the silence deafening.
Kael doesn't speak as we travel, and I follow him without question, trusting him in a way I'm not sure I should. Every instinct in me screams to turn back, to run from whatever nightmare awaits us, but I can't. Not when the world's future—my future—hangs in the balance. Not when I know there's no turning back.
Eventually, we arrive at a crumbling mansion, perched on the edge of a jagged cliff. The windows are blacked out, and the door stands ajar, as if expecting us. The entire structure feels like it's been abandoned for years, yet there's something alive about it, something that makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
Kael looks at me, his face unreadable. "This is it."
I take a deep breath, trying to steady myself. "Do you think the Revenants are here?"
He nods, his expression darkening. "They've been using this place as their base for years. But there's more here than just them. The Revenants aren't the only threat in this building, Lyra."
I feel a chill settle over me, a sense of foreboding that grows with every word. "What do you mean?"
"There's something… else," Kael says, his voice quiet but filled with tension. "Something older. Something that even the Revenants are afraid of."
I swallow hard. "What could be worse than them?"
Kael doesn't answer, his eyes narrowing as he scans the mansion's entrance. I can feel the weight of his words pressing down on me, making my chest tight with anxiety.
We move forward cautiously, each step heavier than the last. The door creaks as we push it open, the sound echoing in the empty halls like a warning. Inside, the air is stale, the dust thick in the corners. Everything here feels forgotten, abandoned by time, and yet... something feels wrong. It's as if the very walls are holding their breath, waiting for something.
Kael leads the way, his steps silent and measured. We pass through rooms that are little more than ruins—decayed furniture, shattered glass, and long-abandoned remnants of what must have been a once-grand home. But none of it matters. My focus is on the dark corridor that stretches ahead, where the shadows seem to deepen with every step.
We reach a door at the end of the hall, and Kael hesitates for a moment, his hand hovering over the handle. There's a look in his eyes—something I can't place—that makes me pause.
"What is it?" I ask quietly, my voice barely above a whisper.
He glances at me, his expression tight. "We're not alone. The Revenants are here. But there's something else... something I can't see. And I'm not sure we're ready for what's behind this door."
I can't help but feel the weight of his words, the heavy air pressing down on me. "We don't have a choice. We have to face them."
Kael nods slowly, his jaw clenched. "I know. But I need you to be ready for whatever happens."
With that, he pushes the door open, and we step into the room.
The space inside is vast, far larger than it should be for a building of this size. The air is thick with power, so dense that it almost feels tangible. Shadows dance along the walls, moving in ways that defy logic. And in the center of the room... there's a large, circular stone altar, surrounded by strange markings that pulse faintly with light.
But it's not the altar that catches my attention. It's the figure standing in front of it.
A woman, tall and draped in shadows, her eyes glowing with an unnatural light. She's beautiful in an eerie way, her skin pale, almost translucent, and her long hair flows around her like dark smoke.
I freeze. There's something wrong with her, something terrifying. And yet, I can't look away.
The woman smiles, and the room grows colder. "I've been expecting you."
Kael steps forward, his hand outstretched. "Who are you?"
The woman's smile widens, and her voice is like ice. "I am the one who controls the Revenants. And you, Lyra Kane, are the key to everything. I've been watching you... waiting for you to come to me."
I feel a chill run down my spine. "What do you want from me?"
She tilts her head, her smile growing colder. "You don't understand, do you? Your power isn't just a gift. It's a curse. And I will be the one to claim it."
Before I can respond, the ground shakes, the walls groaning as though the very foundation of the mansion is shifting. Kael's eyes widen, his voice urgent. "Lyra, we need to get out of here. Now."
But it's too late.
The shadows in the room grow, swirling around the woman like a vortex. And then, everything goes dark.
