Chapter 12: They Are Vampires
Elysia blinked and reached into the deep folds of her coat.
She fumbled around, left and right, before finally pulling out a plastic bag, its earthy scent unmistakable. "Everything's in here. As for fingerprints... Would you like me to cut off a finger? That might be more convenient for you."
The moment Elysia said this, the saleswoman jumped in shock.
She nervously tried to intervene. "Ladies, this is a happy occasion—buying a house! Let's just focus on that. No need to talk about cutting fingers and blood... that's not good luck!"
"Have you not taken a shower for a month?" Elena frowned, her voice laced with suspicion.
"Wrong!" Elysia held up one finger and waved it in front of Elena, correcting her. "It's actually been three years and one month."
"Ugh!"
Before Elysia could finish, both Elena and the saleswoman doubled over in disgust, gagging in unison.
But despite the unpleasantness, the saleswoman forced a smile, trying to remain professional.
Elena, however, was in a good mood. She bought an entire floor of a building, fully furnished and ready to move in.
After finalizing the paperwork, she headed to buy a car.
The car salesman, just like the realtor, quickly accepted the documents Elysia handed him. Less than a minute later, he rushed outside, gagging.
The entire afternoon was spent buying things: four million for the house, one million for the car, and five hundred thousand for miscellaneous items—fridges, TVs, and furniture.
All in all, the costs were moderate, and she still hadn't maxed out the card. Damon must have quite a bit of money.
Meanwhile, at Windy City University...
Damon sat in his office, a cup of mint tea in front of him.
He calmly reviewed the transaction details sent to his phone, his expression composed.
Finally, he sighed and stretched his brow.
After tracing the delivery address, he stood up and made his way out.
"Mr. Gilbert, you've just returned—where are you off to now?" Caroline, just finished with her class, bumped into Damon by the office door.
She believed it was a sign of fate.
Damon tilted his head slightly, as if considering the question, and then said softly, "I'm going to buy a pot."
"Huh?"
Caroline was taken aback. She recalled that Mr. Gilbert had already bought three pots.
It seemed that single men truly had poor life skills—maybe they needed a woman to take care of them?
Like me? she thought with a gentle smile, daydreaming.
But before she could indulge her thoughts, Damon had already disappeared into the elevator.
Later that afternoon, Elena drove the car back to the new house, with Elysia and Fluffy the dog in tow.
As soon as they entered, Elena grabbed Elysia by the collar and, without warning, kicked her into the bathroom, slamming the door behind her.
Fluffy, still adjusting to the new place, excitedly hopped around, leaving a trail of paw prints everywhere.
Naturally, the price for its chaotic energy was being locked onto the balcony to gnaw on peanuts.
As evening approached, the air was warm, the night sky was dotted with countless stars.
Elena stepped onto the balcony, two tall glasses of wine in hand, accompanied by a bottle of vintage 1982 red wine.
She poured them both a glass, sniffed one, then set it aside. From her bag, she pulled out a blood bag, sipping it as her "late dinner."
In the Vampire Clan, only a few could risk consuming human food without severe consequences. Most still lived off blood.
High-ranking vampires would consume rare bloods, like that of blood beasts or blood deer, creatures from the ancient past.
Low-ranking or inferior vampires had to settle for the blood of lesser creatures—things like blood rats, long snakes, or pangolins.
Elysia, freshly showered, smelled fragrant.
She draped a towel over her body and joined Elena on the balcony, sitting beside her.
She mimicked Elena's actions—taking out a blood bag and sipping her own "dinner."
The sound of crunching filled the air.
Fluffy, on the balcony, was gnawing on peanuts, its white fur covered in dirt as it happily chewed away.
Elysia, curious, couldn't help but ask, "Elena, your silly dog actually eats peanuts?"
"Cactus can eat them too, what's wrong with peanuts?" Elena replied dismissively.
"Haha, cactus? You've got a point!" Elysia laughed and gave Elena a thumbs-up. Elena really had a dumb dog.
"You know, don't you think sometimes it's nice to be human? Life isn't too long, so it's not as boring. You get to enjoy fine wines and delicacies." Elena reclined in the lounge chair, enjoying the peace of the evening.
Elysia thought for a moment, then shook her head. "But humans can't fly, can't pierce the clouds to see the stars and galaxies!"
Elena gave Elysia a sidelong glance, her tone laced with a tinge of melancholy. "Exactly. That's why they're less likely to be struck by lightning, and have successfully increased their population."
"Pfft!"
Elysia spat out blood in a burst of laughter, spilling it all over her mouth. She quickly used her hand to catch it.
Humans truly were prolific at multiplying.
Pure-blood vampires had a hard time reproducing, and only by mating with humans could a half-vampire offspring be born.
But vampires turned from humans didn't have the ability to reproduce.
In a sense, those humans were already dead.
They just existed forever, in an eternal, ageless vampire form.
Once upon a time, Elena had been the noble leader of Vampire Clan, commanding an entire army of thousands.
She had been the revered figurehead, admired and feared by all. Her subordinates had included the Four War Gods of Vampire Clan, legendary figures, one of whom was Arcane Gaze—Elysia herself.
Years ago, Elena had sensed a disturbance within the Vampire Clan. She had to find a way to send Elysia away to the human realm.
The reason? Elysia possessed a pair of divine eyes—eyes so powerful that in the upcoming civil war, she would have been the first target for destruction.
Elena needed to protect her.
Now, many years later, Elena wasn't sure whether Elysia would understand, but she had no one left to rely on.
Even though Elysia had learned the ways of deceit, manipulation, and lies, Elena was willing to trust her. She believed in Elysia, the once proud warrior of Vampire Clan, the one she had once trusted the most.
Ding-dong! Ding-dong!
The doorbell rang suddenly, an eerie, mysterious sound breaking the stillness of the house.
Elena and Elysia exchanged a glance, their expressions turning cold.
Outside the door stood Damon, looking around cautiously.
He pulled a universal lock opener from his pocket and placed it on the keypad.
Ten seconds later, the door clicked open, revealing a narrow gap where light spilled through.
Through the crack, two figures could be seen standing outside, their forms cold and rigid.
Their fingers were curled into claws, their ears pointed sharply.
They were vampires.
At that moment, the two vampires stood ready at the door, waiting for the unsuspecting human to take the bait.
