Chapter 5: Chapter 4: Beneath the Surface
As Cassius made his way back to his seat, his usual smug confidence seemed to fill the entire room. Every step he took seemed like it was designed to grab attention, his heart still and as soon as he sat, the room seemed to quiet down a little, like people were waiting for him to do something grand.
But one student, apparently tired of the act, leaned over with a sly grin and asked, "So, Cassius, you actually gonna take part in the competition this time? Or are you just here for the show?"
Cassius didn't even flinch. He turned his head slightly, his smile as cold as ever. "I'm smarter now," he said, voice dripping with too much confidence for it to be anything but a challenge.
The student didn't say anything after that, and the room fell silent for a moment. Cassius, as usual, didn't seem to care. He sat back in his chair, clearly pleased with the effect he'd left.
Damien raised an eyebrow and turned to Emma. "What's this competition about? Is it a big deal or something?"
Emma glanced at him, clearly unimpressed. "Oh, it's just the school's annual competition. Tests people's strength and stuff." She waved her hand, as if it was nothing to get worked up over. "Nothing major, really."
Emma laughed a little. "You know what he tried to challenge the strongest senior, and... well, let's just say he got beat pretty bad. Black and blue. The guy stood no chance. He has his butt handed to him. It was embarrassing." She shrugged like it was no big deal, but Damien could tell she was enjoying the story a little too much.
"Sounds like it was fun to watch," Damien muttered, his lips curling into a grin.
But before Emma could say anything else, Oliver, who had been mostly quiet so far, leaned forward, his face serious. "You're missing the point, you know." His voice was low, like he was about to drop some huge truth bomb.
Damien looked at him. "What do you mean?"
Oliver's eyes flickered to Cassius and then back at them. "The competition isn't just about testing strength. There's something more to it."
Emma rolled her eyes, unimpressed. "Oliver, you and your conspiracy theories. It's just a competition. Chill."
But Oliver wasn't backing down. "No, seriously. I've been paying attention. The school's involved in something bigger. The competition? It's just the surface. There's more going on."
Damien leaned back, suddenly a little more intrigued. "What do you mean? Like what?"
Oliver hesitated for a moment before lowering his voice even more. "I'm not saying it out loud here, but think about it. What happened to the winner of the last two competitions? There's something shady going on behind the scenes, and I have a feeling we'll find out soon enough."
Emma paused, her face downcast. Damien was now curious. "What happened?"
"He went missing. But the winner of this last competition didn't go missing. It was just a coincidence." Emma let out an exaggerated sigh.
"Oh great. Now you've got Damien all paranoid too."
Damien was quiet for a second, staring at Oliver, before his gaze shifted back to Cassius, who was, as usual, acting like he owned the world. Was he really just a clueless idiot, or was there more to him than it seemed?
As the bell rang, snapping him out of his thoughts, Damien couldn't shake the feeling that something big was going on.
