Chapter 16: Behind the closed door

Tony led Sophie out through a hidden exit, one that his team had already secured. They moved quickly, but Tony never once let go of her. His mind remained sharp, always scanning for potential threats. They reached the cars, and Tony wasted no time in ushering Sophie into the back seat. As the engine roared to life, they sped away from the warehouse, the city lights fading behind them.

The drive back to the mansion was silent, the only sounds the steady hum of the car and Sophie's shaky breaths. Tony's jaw was clenched, his eyes fixed on the road ahead as if the world around him had dissolved into nothingness. The adrenaline was wearing off, and the weight of what had just transpired crashed over him like a tidal wave.

Sophie, still trembling, sat beside him, her heart still racing. She didn't know what to say. What could she say after everything that had happened? She had been kidnapped, and Tony had nearly lost everything trying to save her. But that wasn't the worst part. The worst part was the guilt that gnawed at her insides. She had never meant for things to escalate like this. She never wanted to put Tony in danger.

As the car pulled into the driveway, Tony slammed the brakes, the screech of the tires breaking the silence. He didn't look at her. He didn't have to. The tension between them was palpable, and Sophie felt it like a weight pressing down on her chest.

She stepped out of the car, her legs shaky as she made her way to the door, but Tony was right behind her. As soon as they were inside, he turned to her, his eyes cold and piercing.

"Sophie," he said, his voice low and strained, "what the hell were you thinking?"

Sophie froze, unsure how to respond. She had never seen him this angry, this… frustrated. He was usually in control, calm, unflappable. But now, there was something raw, something desperate in his eyes.

"I didn't know… I didn't know this would happen," Sophie said, her voice trembling as she struggled to find the words. "I didn't mean for any of this to happen."

Tony took a step closer, his presence overwhelming. "You didn't mean for this to happen?" His voice was a mixture of disbelief and anger. "Sophie, you didn't tell me where you were going. You put yourself in danger—and you didn't think to tell me anything? What the hell was I supposed to do?"

Sophie's heart ached as she looked at him. "I didn't want you to worry. I thought… I thought I could handle it on my own."

Tony scoffed, his frustration boiling over. "Handle it on your own? Sophie, you're my wife. I care about you. I love you. Don't you understand that? You think I'm just some cold, ruthless businessman who doesn't care about the people in his life?" He stepped back, running a hand through his hair, trying to steady himself. "You're my responsibility. When you go off without telling me, without saying a word, you leave me in the dark. You leave me vulnerable. I can't protect you if you're not honest with me. I can't protect you if you don't trust me."

Sophie's chest tightened at his words. She hadn't expected this. She had thought that Tony was angry because of the danger she was in, but it was more than that. It was because he cared. Because he loved her.

She felt a lump form in her throat, and her eyes welled with tears, the weight of his confession sinking in. She had never allowed herself to believe that he could care for her like this, that he could love her in the way he was saying. She had never allowed herself to believe that she was worthy of that kind of love.

"I'm sorry," Sophie whispered, her voice barely audible. "I didn't want to put you in danger. I just… I didn't want you to worry."

Tony's face softened, but the anger still lingered in his eyes. "You should've trusted me, Sophie. We're in this together. Whether you like it or not, this marriage isn't just some contract. It's real. You're my wife. I love you, and I'm not going to let anything happen to you. But you have to trust me. You have to be open with me."

Sophie's heart raced, her emotions spiraling. She had never expected this confrontation to end like this. She had never expected Tony to admit that he loved her, to tell her that he wanted to protect her. It was more than she could handle.

"I do trust you," she said, her voice quiet but firm. "But I was scared. I didn't want to drag you into this. I didn't want you to see me as weak."

Tony shook his head, his expression softening. "Sophie, I don't see you as weak. I see you as someone who's been through hell and back, someone who's stronger than you think. But you can't keep pushing me away. You can't keep shutting me out. You have to let me in."

Sophie's breath caught in her throat, and for the first time in a long time, she felt like she could breathe again. She wasn't alone. Tony was right there with her, and despite everything that had happened, he wasn't going anywhere.

"I'm sorry," she repeated, her voice barely above a whisper. "I didn't mean to hurt you."

Tony took a step forward, his eyes locking onto hers. "I know you didn't. But we need to be honest with each other. From now on, no more secrets. No more lies."

Sophie nodded, her heart swelling with emotion. She didn't know what the future held, but she knew one thing for sure. She wasn't alone anymore. And for the first time in a long time, that thought gave her hope.
