Chapter 753 - Traveling Together
Chapter Seven Hundred and Fifty-Three
Although stories about university graduates returning home to raise pigs or grow greenhouse vegetables to become rich often appear in the news,
it's precisely because it's rare that it draws attention.
Bai Xuehen is the school beauty of Sichuan Conservatory of Music, a multiple provincial and municipal music award winner, exceptionally talented. She's destined not only to become a renowned musician but at least an outstanding instrumentalist, engaged in such an elegant profession.
To be associated with a farmer who raises pigs and grows vegetables.
No matter how you think about it, it feels awkward.
A flash of disdain crossed Yue Rong's face as she said lightly, "So he's a farmer."
Hearing the overt mockery in Yue Rong's tone, Long Xiaoshan remained impassive as a stone Buddha, his expression unfluctuating. However, a barely detectable frown crossed Bai Xuehen's brows. She was usually placid and seldom angry.
But seeing Yue Rong mocking Long Xiaoshan, her heart stirred slightly and she couldn't help but interject, "Farmers are great. Without farmers, where would we get so many delicious foods? Besides, Big Brother Xiaoshan's farm is wonderful. It's quite famous in our city. Next time you come to my house, I'll invite you to taste the fruits and vegetables he grows."
Yue Rong's face changed slightly.
She and Bai Xuehen were very close friends.
She understood Bai Xuehen's character very well.
Although Bai Xuehen spoke calmly, even a fool could hear the protective tone in her words. Given Bai Xuehen's genteel nature, it was unprecedented for her to retort immediately after someone else had spoken.
This made Yue Rong feel very uncomfortable.
She even felt a bit aggrieved.
Bai Xuehen was actually defending a farmer against her.
It made her feel like an outsider, excluded.
What's so good about him? He's just tall and handsome. In this day and age, pretty boys are a dime a dozen. The most important aspect of a man is not his looks, but his substance. And a farmer, what substance could he have, even if he is a pig-farming magnate, is still a nouveau riche.
Bai Xuehen is like a Heavenly Immortal, a superb woman untainted by mortal affairs.
How could she be with a farmer?
No!
She absolutely must not let Bai Xuehen become a fresh flower stuck on a dung heap.
Such a firm thought sprouted in Yue Rong's heart.
Her gaze towards Long Xiaoshan turned even more hostile.
Long Xiaoshan seemed unaware of the antagonism in Yue Rong's eyes. He chuckled, "Xuehen, are you guys here to have fun?"
"Yes, Big Brother Xiaoshan. How about you? How come you are here?" Bai Xuehen asked curiously.
"Oh, I'm also here to enjoy myself," Long Xiaoshan replied with a casual excuse.
"Big Brother Xiaoshan, you've come all the way to Tianfu and didn't contact me. Did you never think about visiting me?" Bai Xuehen pouted slightly, her tone tinged with a hint of coquettish grievance.
Long Xiaoshan felt a bit embarrassed. To be honest, he had indeed not thought about visiting Bai Xuehen.
After all, there were so many things that he had to do.
How could he have time to think about so much?
However, he wasn't someone with low emotional intelligence. He smiled and said, "How could that be? Before I came here, Auntie Su even asked me to send her regards to you, saying you haven't been home for a long time. I was planning to look for you once I finished my business."
"The holidays are coming soon, and I've been busy with end-of-term coursework and exams, so I haven't gone home. Is my mother's health okay?"
"Very well. Auntie Su has recently been busy with charity foundation work…"
"…"
Long Xiaoshan and Bai Xuehen talked back and forth as if there were endless things to say, completely forgetting the presence of other people nearby.
Yue Rong and the others had never seen Bai Xuehen in such a girlish and infatuated state before.
You should know she always preferred quiet, even at friend gatherings she would listen more and talk less, let alone in situations where no one could get a word in edgewise.
Yue Rong finally couldn't take it anymore, stepped forward, hugged Bai Xuehen's arm, and said, "Xuehen, are you playing or not? Look at the time."
Bai Xuehen glanced at her watch.
Actually, she wasn't interested in outings like this.
It was Yue Rong who had dragged her out. She hadn't seen Long Xiaoshan for a long time and was happy at heart, really wanting to talk to him alone.
But now, if she just turned around and left, she feared being too obvious and neglecting her classmates.
She felt somewhat conflicted inside.
Seeing the look that flashed across Bai Xuehen's face, Long Xiaoshan just smiled slightly as if he understood and said, "Since there's nothing much to do, let's go together."
"Really?" Bai Xuehen's face lit up with surprise and delight.
Yue Rong heard that Long Xiaoshan was actually going to join them.
Her expression turned even gloomier, and she muttered under her breath, "No tact."
Her plan was to pull Bai Xuehen away, but now Long Xiaoshan was tagging along without even asking their opinion, deciding to join them on the spot.
Yue Rong's comment was neither too loud nor too soft and not directed at anyone specifically, falling within the boundaries where others clearly knew whom she was talking about but couldn't fault her for it. Bai Xuehen gave Long Xiaoshan an apologetic smile; Long Xiaoshan remained unfazed, not taking Yue Rong's words to heart.
If there was something he wanted to do, he would do it.
As for what others thought and the complaints they had, what did it have to do with him?
"Let's get going quickly."
Bai Xuehen said hurriedly, hugging Long Xiaoshan's arm.
So the group continued along the shores of Misty Lake. The area by Misty Lake was extensive, with a large park on the side close to the city center. Along the lakeside road was the famous snack street. Tianfu City was known for its delicacies, and there were all sorts of snacks along the way—dumplings, grilled skewers, guokui, lung slices, dandan noodles—eating non-stop.
Even a refined girl like Bai Xuehen ended up with a mouthful of grease and a significantly rounder belly.
All the way there.
Long Xiaoshan also became familiar with this group of young men and women.
He found out that Bai Xuehen, Yue Rong, Qi Yingshin, and Jiang Xue were roommates, Chen Huahui was Qi Yingshin's boyfriend, and Cao Wenbai was Jiang Xue's boyfriend.
Chen Huahui was rather gentle and cultured, a top scholar from Sichuan University; Cao Wenbai was a sports student from Sichuan Normal University, tall and strong, with a cheerful personality.
They all had nice characters.
And good family backgrounds too.
Aside from Yue Rong looking down her nose at Long Xiaoshan.
The others showed no disdain for Long Xiaoshan's peasant background.
Unlike when Long Xiaoshan first attended the dormitory gathering in Hechuan City with Chun Tao and was subjected to all kinds of difficulty and disdain, heavily ostracized—after all, Bian Xuehen's friends were all from prestigious schools and had a different perspective and standing from a student at a small private institute.
Of course, there was still a sense of cliquishness.
Even if they were outwardly as warm as a spring breeze, a subtle sense of distance was inevitable.
Long Xiaoshan didn't mind.
This sort of cliquishness was something that couldn't be erased.
Just as these prestigious school students and ordinary farmers would never interact with the same people or discuss matters with the same depth and breadth, they could never really integrate.
Though Long Xiaoshan was no ordinary farmer, and his vision and depth of thought were certainly no less—actually, even far exceeded—any of the prestigious school students.
But he enjoyed his peace and quiet.
Except for the most part, holding various snacks for Bai Xuehen.
Other times, he scarcely joined in the conversations of Yue Rong and the others, walking behind with his hands behind his back, leisurely following behind Bai Xuehen like a brother taking care of his own sister.
