Chapter 33: The Suspect
"You don't have to apologize. I told you that I would help you with the kidnapping case," Valentin reassured Winter.
Her face was still deadly pale from all the blood loss.
"Did you guys have a clue of who might be behind the kidnappings?" Valentin asked.
Winter shook her head and said, "The kidnapper also has a special ability. We think that it might be a spatial power, meaning that he can control space and escape from the other dimension he creates. We only know that he wears a black robe."
"We do know who might be the founder of the village, though," Winter added. "Nikolai and I saw him once at the laboratory when we were young. We only recently found out his identity."
"Who is he?" Valentin asked curiously.
"His name is Dr. Milo," Nikolai replied.
Valentin knew who that man was. He was a renowned scientist who had contributed to the country's advancement. The man had received a lot of awards for his research. Then, the scientist disappeared from the research world and became a businessman. He was now the CEO of the prestigious pharmaceutical company called 'TrustMed'.
The judge would have never guessed that the one behind the village was him. If Dr. Milo was truly their enemy, how would they even catch him? Would the police and the population believe them if they said that he was kidnapping children to experiment on them?
The scientist's high status made it hard for them to catch him. Even if they had evidence, Dr. Milo could just find a scapegoat to admit to his crimes.
Valentin sighed and massaged his temple. Why did the scientists who came in contact with him act like crazy people? Why did they have to commit crimes? Did they find it dull to have too much power? It was the same thing in his past life, too. Some of the rich people tend to commit crimes because they aren't afraid. They believed that no one would be able to punish them, not even God.
"You guys should rest while you can. I'll be in charge of finding the location of the kidnapped children. We'll go save them when I find them. Saving the children is our top priority; we can worry about Dr. Milo later," Valentin said.
Nikolai and Winter both agreed to his plan and told Valentin to come to the farm again when he found the children. They were afraid that if they called each other, it might be heard by the enemy. They had a feeling that the intruders were only a small part of Dr. Milo's forces. He surely had other people at his service. That must mean that there was more than one village.
'Can you upgrade Winter and Nikolai's powers and get rid of their side effect?" Valentin asked the system.
[Of course! It's an easy task!]
It would be a suicidal fight if Winter and Nikolai weren't stronger. Their side effects were a huge disadvantage if they fought against other assassins like them. The founder of the village surely had more assassins who were more powerful than they were. They had no other choice but to become stronger.
[Loading … The system has levelled them up.
Winter: B- Rank Assassin
Nikolai: B Rank Assassin]
Seeing the new feature, Valentin looked at the system's screen again. He could see the ranks of the two assassins. What a bizarre but helpful feature. It felt as if he was inside a game.
The system's power was still a mystery to Valentin. He wondered how the system could perform supernatural things. Why did he feel like the system needed a lot of money? Why did a higher being need something so worthless? Why did the system consider his past life actions good? When did killing become something to be praised about? Valentin never thought that his actions were right. He knew that killing was wrong. He just couldn't resist getting rid of scumbags who hurt innocent people.
When Valentin finally arrived home, the sound of the TV was on. Seojin was looking at the news, which reported the missing children. The crying parents were all gathered in front of the police station, demanding that they find their children. Why didn't the police find them yet? What took them so long?
"Hyung, you are back," Seojin called softly. He hasn't seen the judge much these days. They always had different schedules. He knew that Valentin was busy, but he was dying to hug and kiss the judge. Seojin had missed him.
"I'm back. How is it going at school? There's no one daring to bully you right now, right?" Valentin asked. He knew that the kid was busy with schoolwork. Valentin wanted to make sure that he was having a good time a school and wasn't harassed by other students. Well, the kid was taller than him right now, so he doubted anyone would dare to pick a fight with him.
"Everything is going well at school. Of course not, they don't bully me anymore," Seojin replied. It was more like he had gotten more attention on himself after his glow-up. He was taller than the bullies, so they didn't dare to touch him. With the principal on his side, he didn't have to worry about someone trying to hinder his studies.
"Are you working on that kidnapping case?" Seojin asked. He had noticed that the judge had been collecting information about the incidents.
"Yes, this case is a hard one."
Seojin didn't remember about something like that happening in his past life. There was no news about the kidnapped children. Maybe he didn't live long enough to see it happen.
"Are you still working with Nikolai?" Seojin asked. The assassin had stopped coming to school after Valentin came back from the dead. Seojin hadn't seen Nikolai in a while, not like he wanted to see him. He was just frustrated that he didn't get any information about his parents' deaths. Seojin wanted to know if other people, other than his relatives, played a part in his parents' deaths.
"Yes, but if you are uncomfortable with it, I'll stop working with them," Valentin said.
"No, it's okay. It will be safer if you work with them," Seojin said. He knew that the assassins were stronger than normal people. In his past life, he had fought against Nikolai. He was the hardest target to kill. How did he even manage to kill Nikolai, who had superpowers? But he remembered that Nikolai hadn't used his powers at all that night. When he finished killing Nikolai, he remembered that he had gazed up at the full moon. It was incredibly bright, shining over the bloody crime scene.
