Chapter 179: Chapter 178
Alex stood by the window, gazing at the cityscape below as dusk slowly settled in. The projected future of PowerGen flashed in his mind—83% influence across the globe in five years. It was an incredible achievement, but one that brought with it a heavy weight. The more power PowerGen gained, the greater the risk that those at the helm would lose sight of their original purpose.
He had seen it before. Power, when unchecked, had a way of corrupting even the most well-meaning individuals. His trust in PowerGen's leadership wasn't blind; he knew there were those among them who had their own agendas. That's why he had always stayed involved, quietly guiding from the shadows.
But with their growing dominance, Alex realized something: What if the time came when PowerGen no longer listened to him? What if they turned against him?
"Cognichip, display the tech backend architecture for all PowerGen systems."
The response was immediate. A complex web of systems appeared before him, detailing the infrastructure that held PowerGen's empire together. From the energy grids to the exosuits, from the nanotech to the AI systems, it was all connected, interwoven into one massive network of influence and control.
"PowerGen systems fully integrated," Cognichip's text appeared across his vision. "You have full access to all schematics and control points."
Alex studied the interface carefully, his mind already racing with ideas. He couldn't rely on trust alone—not when so much was at stake. PowerGen had become too important, too influential. If they ever turned against him, or worse, if they got too ambitious and pushed the world into conflict, he needed a way to stop it. To shut it all down if necessary.
"What are the current safeguards in place?"
"Standard encryption and security protocols. The AI systems overseeing operations are autonomous but can be overridden by central command if required."
That wasn't good enough. He needed something more discreet, something they wouldn't see coming.
"I need to install a hidden backend in all of PowerGen's systems. A failsafe. Something only I can access, that allows me to shut everything down if necessary," Alex said, his voice calm but determined. "Begin implementation immediately, but make sure it remains undetectable to anyone else."
Cognichip responded with precision. "Understood. Developing hidden access protocols. Estimated time to completion: 72 hours."
Alex nodded, satisfied. PowerGen's leadership may have been trustworthy now, but there were no guarantees for the future. "Power corrupts," he thought grimly. And when the stakes were this high, he couldn't afford to take any chances.
Eva's voice suddenly broke through his thoughts, soft but insistent. "Alex, there is an incoming report on PowerGen's recent activity in the Southeast Asian markets. Would you like the summary?"
"Go ahead, Eva," Alex said, turning away from the window to focus on the floating hologram that appeared before him.
"PowerGen's expansion into the region has been met with resistance from local tech companies, but negotiations are underway. The governments there are keen on establishing partnerships, as PowerGen's energy solutions promise to reduce their dependency on fossil fuels. However, concerns about PowerGen's growing control have been voiced by several key industry leaders."
Alex frowned. "Are they worried about monopolization?"
"Correct," Eva replied. "There are growing concerns that PowerGen's influence could undermine local industries and lead to economic dependency."
"That's the problem with being too successful," Alex mused. "They see us as a threat, not a partner. Keep an eye on the negotiations, Eva. Make sure our team emphasizes cooperation over control."
"I will monitor the situation closely," Eva assured him.
Alex sighed and walked back to his desk. PowerGen was moving faster than he had anticipated. It was good for business, but it also meant he needed to stay even more vigilant. The hidden backend he was implementing would be his safety net—his way to ensure that if the worst ever happened, if PowerGen ever lost sight of its mission, he could pull the plug.
"Cognichip, status update on backend development."
"Backend integration 10% complete. Implementation remains undetected. Estimated time to completion remains 72 hours."
Alex leaned back in his chair, his eyes narrowing. It wasn't just about the backend. There were deeper issues at play here. The more PowerGen expanded, the more they would be exposed to betrayal, both from within and from external forces. Governments, corporations, even rogue ability-users—they all had their eyes on PowerGen. And Alex knew better than anyone how quickly alliances could shift.
"I need more than just a failsafe," he murmured to himself. "I need contingencies in place to handle every possible scenario."
Cognichip's interface responded with an array of possible solutions, from remote access lockdowns to security protocols designed to counter infiltration. Alex selected several options, refining them as he went. He couldn't afford to leave anything to chance.
Suddenly, Eva's voice returned. "Alex, there's also new intel from Europe. A consortium of tech firms has formed an alliance to challenge PowerGen's dominance in the region. They are pooling resources to create their own energy solutions."
"They're trying to build a competitor," Alex said, more intrigued than concerned. "Interesting. Let them try. It'll push us to innovate even further. Keep tabs on their progress, but don't interfere just yet."
"Understood," Eva replied. "Would you like updates on their developments?"
"Yes, regular updates. I want to know everything they're working on. But for now, let's keep our focus on internal matters."
He stood up, pacing the room again. In the back of his mind, he couldn't shake the feeling that PowerGen's rapid rise would eventually bring unwanted attention from the more shadowy corners of the world. It was inevitable. The more power they accumulated, the more people would try to tear them down.
But with the backend in place, Alex knew he'd have the final say. PowerGen could rise, could dominate, but it would never outgrow him. He would always be the one with the keys to the kingdom, able to shut it all down if the need arose.
"Cognichip," Alex said as he paused in his pacing, "Initiate additional failsafe protocols. I want the backend to be accessible only through biometric and soul power verification."
"Understood. Failsafe protocols initiated. Verification methods in place."
"Good," Alex murmured, his thoughts already moving ahead to the next step. He couldn't be too careful, not with so much at stake. He had built PowerGen from the ground up, and no matter how far it expanded, no matter how much power it accumulated, he would always retain control.
Because in the end, power didn't corrupt those who knew how to wield it wisely.
And Alex had every intention of doing just that.
