Chapter 177: Chapter 176
Weeks bled into months as Alex continued his relentless observation of the elusive fire sequence. Inside the safety of the Cognichip's space, the flame danced in front of him, always flickering, always shifting, and always just out of his reach. Though his efforts hadn't yielded any significant breakthroughs, he was slowly catching on to some repeated patterns. It wasn't much, but it was a start.
Every so often, Eva would chime in, her familiar voice breaking the silence of his training.
"Alex, there's been another development in Eastern Europe. PowerGen's influence is spreading, but several regions have begun to resist the new technology. Shall I display the latest reports?"
"Later, Eva," Alex replied, eyes locked on the fire in front of him. "I need to figure this out first."
Eva's voice was calm. "Of course. I will continue monitoring in the background."
As the flames danced before him, Alex considered a new approach. His training had been limited to passive observation—watching, analyzing, hoping to find some consistency. But maybe it was time to engage the flames more directly, to step into the sequence and feel its rhythm at a deeper level.
He closed his eyes, accessing the Cognichip's interface. His body vanished from the virtual space, and he re-manifested himself within it, not just as an observer but as an active presence. His mental strength, now at level 5 cultivated through the new frequency techniques, surged through him. The sheer power of his mind allowed him to perceive the tiniest fluctuations in the flame's movement, but understanding was still difficult.
"Cognichip," he thought. "Manifest my mental frequency technique here."
The familiar silent text appeared before him:
"Technique applied. Simulation activated."
Immediately, Alex felt a subtle shift around him. The frequency techniques he had developed over time—designed to sync with the rhythm of all things—began to hum through the space, creating a deep resonance that spread out from his being. He could feel the vibrations of everything around him, from the virtual floor beneath his feet to the simulated particles that made up the air.
He focused on the flame, tuning himself to its chaotic movements. His goal was simple: to gain a connection to its rhythm, to feel the pulse of the cosmic energy that fueled it. If he could sync his frequency to that of the fire, maybe—just maybe—he could start to truly understand its essence.
For hours, he sat, tuning himself to the flame's rhythm. He felt the pulse of the energy within it, but every time he thought he was getting closer, the sequence would shift. It was like trying to grasp water—always slipping through his fingers, never staying in one place long enough to understand.
Suddenly, Eva's voice broke his concentration once more. "Alex, there has been a notable shift in the Middle East. A new faction of ability users has emerged, claiming territory previously controlled by PowerGen. Would you like a detailed report?"
"Later, Eva," Alex muttered, his attention still locked on the flame. "I'm so close..."
He pushed harder, letting his mental strength flow through him as he continued to tune into the fire's rhythm. The flames pulsed with energy, and for a brief moment, he felt something—an almost imperceptible connection between his mental frequency and the fire's sequence. It was faint, like a whisper in the back of his mind, but it was there.
Then, just as quickly as it had come, the connection vanished.
"Damn," Alex cursed under his breath. "It's like trying to catch smoke with your hands."
The Cognichip's screen flickered before him, offering its usual calm analysis:
"The fire sequence is a dynamic system, influenced by the flows of cosmic energy. Attempts to sync with its rhythm will require continued observation and practice. Current progress: 18% understanding."
"Eighteen percent?" Alex grumbled. "Feels more like zero."
He leaned back in the virtual space, letting out a long sigh. The task in front of him was monumental—far more complex than anything he had tackled before. Learning the sequence of fire was like trying to solve a puzzle with missing pieces, and every time he thought he had found one, the entire picture shifted.
But he couldn't give up. This was his path now, and he would walk it, no matter how difficult it became.
"Cognichip, let's try again. Sync my mental frequency with the fire's rhythm." He straightened up, eyes locked on the flame once more.
The screen flashed:
"Simulation reactivated. Mental frequency synchronized. Continue observation."
The hum of his mental strength returned, and once again, Alex found himself immersed in the shifting rhythm of the fire. It was maddening—beautiful, but maddening. Each flicker of the flame revealed a new layer of complexity, a new pattern hidden within the chaos. He felt like a novice once more, despite all his progress.
"Maybe I'm approaching this wrong," Alex thought. "Maybe I need to stop trying to force it and just... let it flow."
He relaxed, letting go of the tension that had been building in his mind. Instead of trying to impose his will on the flame, he let his mental frequency flow naturally, allowing it to resonate with the fire at its own pace. Slowly, the flames began to feel more familiar—less like an enemy to be conquered and more like a partner in a complex dance.
Just then, Eva's voice chimed in again. "Alex, you've been at this for several hours. Shall I compile the latest world events for your review?"
"Yeah, Eva," Alex said, taking a break from the fire sequence. "Give me the highlights."
The holographic display reappeared, showing a map of the world with various markers indicating hot spots and areas of interest.
"In addition to the Middle Eastern faction I mentioned earlier, there has been growing unrest in Eastern Europe. PowerGen's influence is being challenged by several ability users who have formed coalitions. Meanwhile, Arjun's faction remains stable, and he continues to consolidate power in his region."
"And here I am, just trying to understand fire," Alex muttered.
Eva continued. "Your family remains safe, as does Lakeside City. PowerGen's presence there has ensured stability, and there have been no major disturbances."
"At least there's that," Alex said, leaning back. He closed the report, grateful that his family remained out of harm's way. For now, the world outside was still spinning, but within the safety of his Cognichip space, Alex knew he had his own battles to fight.
"Cognichip," he said quietly. "Let's keep going. Show me the flame again."
The flames reappeared in front of him, flickering with the same chaotic beauty they had before. But this time, Alex didn't feel as frustrated. He had made some progress, however small, and he was starting to understand the rhythm of the fire, even if only a little.
"One step at a time," he thought, as the sequence continued to shift and swirl before him.
