Chapter 273: kurome and Akame
______
The night was as tranquil as flowing water.
Suspended in the air was a massive four-winged dragon, its imposing form illuminated by the moonlight. Atop the dragon stood two girls, their silhouettes sharp against the night sky.
Below, in the military camp, soldiers gazed up at them with reverence.
Ahead, the landscape—trees, flowers, rocks, and soil—had all been transformed into intricate ice sculptures. A biting cold lingered in the air, an oppressive reminder of the recent battle.
"She's gone," said Kurome, her voice steady yet tinged with tension.
Akame slid Murasame back into its scabbard.
"Her strength has grown even more terrifying," she said, her tone grave.
Kurome said nothing, guiding the four-winged dragon to descend slowly. The creature landed gracefully in the open space within the military camp.
"My Lords!"
The camp commander hurried forward to greet them.
Kurome didn't respond. Instead, she turned and walked into a nearby tent. The four-winged dragon curled up by the entrance, its massive form serving as an unyielding sentinel.
In the past, activating the Yatsufusa drained Kurome's energy and weakened her physical state. But since her rebirth, aided by Aoki, those limitations had vanished.
Now, to be prepared for Esdeath at any moment, Kurome rarely dismissed the four-winged dragon, keeping it constantly at her side.
"Carry on with your duties. Don't worry about us," Akame said to the camp commander before following Kurome into the tent.
The commander nodded respectfully, backing away with care.
"Pass my orders—no one is to disturb the two Lords!"
A nearby guard smirked. "Disturb them? With a super-dangerous beast standing watch at the door, who'd even dare?"
The commander shot him a glare.
"If you offend Lord Kurome, it's a death sentence!"
The guard chuckled nervously. "I was just joking, sir."
"Even jokes have limits," the commander said sternly.
"Understood!" The guard straightened, his tone now serious.
Inside the Tent
As Akame entered, she immediately sensed Kurome's sour mood. Following her gaze, she spotted a familiar figure standing within.
"Aoki? You're back?" Akame asked, her voice laced with surprise.
Aoki nodded with a smile. "How does it feel to be a hero?"
"It feels… strange," Akame admitted, her expression conflicted.
Kurome nodded silently in agreement.
Once assassins who thrived in the shadows, their hands stained with blood, the two girls now found themselves hailed as heroes. For the past two months, wherever they went, they were met with admiration and respect—a stark contrast to the lives they once led.
The drastic shift left them feeling out of place, as if they were playing roles that didn't belong to them.
Late at Night
After an intense battle, Akame, exhausted and drained, retired to rest. Meanwhile, Aoki and Kurome stepped outside the camp, the cold night air brushing against their skin.
"Have you been stationed here the entire time?" Aoki asked.
Kurome walked with her hands clasped behind her back, a faint smile on her lips.
"We don't have a fixed base. We've been tracking Esdeath's movements. We only arrived here about a week ago," she explained.
The two eventually reached a serene lake. The cold moonlight danced on its surface, casting a silvery glow over the gentle waves.
Aoki stopped, turning to face the black-haired girl beside him.
"Kurome, I came here to take you with me. I've encountered some problems and need your help," he said earnestly.
Kurome's eyes brightened, excitement flickering across her face.
"Really? I'd love to go with you!" she exclaimed. But then, as if remembering something, hesitation clouded her expression.
"I want to go with you, Aoki, but… what about Esdeath?"
Aoki smiled knowingly. "Do you enjoy being a hero?"
Kurome hesitated, her gaze dropping for a moment. "I just… I feel like it's a way to atone for the mistakes I've made in the past."
Aoki was momentarily taken aback. He turned to look at the shimmering lake, his reflection staring back at him from its surface.
"Don't worry, I'll deal with Esdeath before I leave this time," Aoki said confidently.
"Then there's no problem!" Kurome's expression relaxed. She hesitated for a moment before adding, "By the way, Aoki, I have a request."
____
The black-haired girl lay quietly on a simple camp bed, her breathing steady, her expression serene. The dim light cast soft shadows across her face as two dark figures crept into the tent.
Aoki glanced at Akame on the bed, then leaned close to Kurome's ear, lowering his voice.
"Kurome, are you sure you want to do this?" he asked, his tone skeptical.
Kurome's expression was resolute. "I want to be with my sister forever. Isn't this the best way?"
"But when Akame wakes up, won't she kill us both?" Aoki whispered.
Kurome leaned even closer, her tone playful yet determined. "It's fine. We're both immortal now. At worst, I'll let her chop us up a few times to vent her anger."
"Even if you're immortal, you might not survive Murasame," Aoki pointed out.
"Don't worry," Kurome replied confidently. "Even if my sister gets angry, she wouldn't use Murasame on us!"
Suddenly, Akame's blood-red eyes opened. She sat up, her sharp gaze locking onto the pair.
"Can't you two keep your voices down when discussing things like this?" she said, her tone flat but unmistakably annoyed.
"Sister, you're awake!" Kurome tilted her head, smiling sweetly.
Aoki, unsurprised, crossed his arms.
Akame was a top-tier assassin, always on high alert—especially now, with the looming threat of Esdeath. It would have been impossible for her not to notice someone entering her tent. In fact, Aoki had seen her stir the moment they stepped inside.
Still, they hadn't bothered to hide their intentions.
"Tell me," Akame said, sitting cross-legged on the bed, "what exactly are you planning to do to me?"
Kurome took a step forward. "Sister, you've noticed my… special power, haven't you?"
Akame nodded. They had spent enough time together for her to notice something unusual.
"That's right," Akame confirmed.
Akame's gaze sharpened. "Is that also why you were able to recover from the drugs and regain your health?"
"Exactly." Kurome nodded again. "Aoki's power not only healed my body and made me stronger, but it also granted me immortality and eternal life."
Akame's eyes narrowed slightly. "Is there a downside to this power?"
Aoki raised an eyebrow. "If there weren't, would I be worried about you getting angry?"
Kurome held up her thumb and index finger, forming a small gap. "There's just one little drawback."
Akame's expression remained neutral. "Let me guess—you can't eat?"
Kurome tried to persuade her. "Sister, if you gain this power, we might have a better chance against Esdeath. And… I don't want to live for hundreds of years without you by my side."
Akame tilted her head. "Isn't Aoki going to be around?"
Kurome pouted. "But I want to be with you too!" She grabbed Akame's hand and shot Aoki a meaningful look.
Aoki sighed, then added, "I've been researching a way to restore the ability to taste food. Not being able to eat is only temporary. I'm confident I'll solve it soon."
Akame's voice was calm, almost indifferent. "When did I say I wouldn't agree?"
Kurome froze for a moment, then her face lit up with joy. "Sister, you agree?"
"I don't want to leave you alone either," Akame said softly, squeezing Kurome's hand. She turned to Aoki. "What do I need to do?"
Aoki's expression grew serious. "Are you sure? Once this begins, there's no turning back. Once you've transformed, there's no room for regret."
Akame's tone was firm. "I've made up my mind. But," she added, her voice sharpening, "you will find a way to eat again—soon."
Aoki chuckled. "Don't worry. I won't leave until later. I'll help you with the transformation when the time comes. Until then, take this opportunity to enjoy yourself."
"Good!" Akame's crimson eyes seemed to burn with determination.
