Chapter 17: Thief
Trapped in a deep, dark void, I found myself alone.
"Get up, son."
A familiar voice, but long unheard, woke me, and I struggled to open my heavy eyes.
The light piercing through made me shield my eyes with my hand.
"It's morning, why are you still sleeping?"
That familiar voice again, always bringing both joy and sadness whenever I thought about it.
I blinked, starting to look around.
"...A car?"
I was sitting in the back seat of a car, it felt soft, but I couldn't understand why I was here.
"How is it? Our new car."
The voice came again, and I could pinpoint where it was coming from.
The person was driving, and there was no one else on the road.
He had a middle-aged appearance, neatly groomed hair, and a bit of stubble on his chin.
He seemed so familiar, and I was sure I knew him.
"Dad?"
That was my father.
He smiled, looking at the mirror reflecting me.
"How do you feel?"
"...hard to say."
"That's right, you always get car sick," he chuckled, continuing to drive.
"Did you enjoy the journey?"
"Huh?"
I looked at him confused, unsure how he knew.
But he didn't say anything, just kept driving.
"Oh, it was great, Dad. The girl I know treated me really well."
"Oh? Does that mean you're getting married soon?"
"Dad, it's not like that..."
"Haha, I'm just kidding."
He chuckled lightly, then stopped the car and looked at me.
"Are you happy?"
It was a strange question, but the answer came to me quickly.
"Yes."
"...That's good."
He smiled contentedly at me and said "That means you won't die alone anymore."
"...Huh?"
As I realized something was off about that statement, I looked at his face and saw...
A charred corpse.
"It's not your fault, you don't deserve this."
The corpse spoke, its eyes lifeless yet full of love as it looked at me.
That's when I realized,
'Oh right... Dad died in a house fire just to save me.'
Everything around began to fade away, and my Dad
vanished with it.
I fell into a deep abyss, and kept falling...

"Ugh..." I slowly opened my eyes, the first thing I saw was the sun. I sat up and began to look around, only to find Wukong using her two hands and tail to hold a stick grilling something.
"Oh, You finally awake!"
"What just happened?" Despite just waking up, I had a feeling this monkey had done something.
"Oh, it's just that I wanted to teach them a lesson. After all, they had intentions to harm us!" She gestured with her foot to the right.
I turned to look and saw a scene that nearly made my jaw drop.
"Wukong... WHAT DID YOU DO?!!" I panicked as I saw the temple burning, smoke billowing everywhere.
"I told you, payback" she shrugged, not too concerned, holding a stick.
"BUT- wait what are you eating?" My fear subsided as I looked at what she was grilling, which was golden and smelled of cheese.
"Oh, it's cheese! They had a lot of hidden food, all high-quality stuff!" She grinned, eating a piece of cheese and shaking as if she had just tasted something divine.
Then, Wukong handed me another grilled cheese stick.
"Um, thank you? But this is Quan Yi Monastery, aren't you worried?" I looked at the burning temple and ate the cheese.
'Delicious, they deserved this if they were hiding such good food.'
"Why be afraid? From the beginning, they plan to kill us, so she's the one responsible," Wukong shrugged, rummaging through the bag full of food.
"Hungry" a small voice came from behind me, making me jump.
Turning around, Yu Long appeared out of nowhere.
"Sister! Come eat!" Wukong waved her hand, inviting Yu Long to join.
Yu Long pulled my sleeve, looking at me as if she wanted me to eat with her. I sighed and joined Yu Long to sit by the fire to eat.
"Oh, by the way... where's our bag?" I asked while grilling the meat.
"I don't know" Wukong replied, continuing to eat.
"Oh okay"
All three of us fell silent.
"Wait, what?! Did you lose it?!!"
"It's not my fault tho! At first, I wanted to find the bag, but I couldn't find it anywhere!"
'Isn't it because you don't know how to keep it?!'
My face darkened, that bag held quite a few valuable items, and losing it is no different than eating shit!
"Oh, I did see a girl take the bag," Yu Long suddenly said.
"Huh?" Both Wukong and I exclaimed, looking at Yu Long.
"I'm not entirely sure, but her scent resembled that of the old man."
"That's my girl!!" Wukong exclaimed happily, wanting to hug Yu Long, but she managed to evade.
"Wukong, it's your responsibility," I reminded her sternly.
"Fine, fine~" Wukong lazily replied, scratching her ear.

"This robe is so beautiful!"
Before grabbing the bag, she went to Quan Yi Monastery to assess the situation.
Seeing the monastery burned beyond repair, she decided to search for anything valuable that remained, while also looking for the arsonist.
However, something caught her eye—a bag revealing a very beautiful cassock, causing her to forget her initial purpose for being there.
Looking around, she decided to take it with her.
Holding the robe in her hand, she happily ran back to the cave, as if not wanting anyone to see it.
As for the bag? She just left it in somewhere (In a corner of the cave, likely near the toilet)
Although it went against her initial plan but looking at the result she achieved, she was satisfied enough.
